Millards Quarry Rail Operations

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A review of operations at the Millard Limestone quarry at Annville, PA from the early 70's to 2012. Over the years the various operating entities used a wide array of power from Whitcomb, Alco, EMD and GE. Some of this material was previously posted in a short video, but this coverage is expanded with new material and historical info. Enjoy the sounds of the 50's and 60's recorded some 40 years later.

    You always have really great content.. I enjoyed this documentary of historical transition of the quarry. So often we model an industry and have little idea of how it really works.. This was great. I've put this into my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

    I live in Palmyra and was pleased to run across this video. Have watched that operations for years and never tire of it. Another GREAT train watching spot is Derry Rd. crossing in Hershey. NS double track main...about 60 or so trains a day. As a member of the Hershey American Legion post 386, its a pleasure to sit on our porch (our building is about 50 ft from the tracks at Derry crossing) and watch trains while sipping a cold one. Great video, and keep up the good work!

    STC Yardmaster - This is great video footage at the Annville quarry!!! I shot videos here in 1994 when the ex-CR U-boat and GP9 were in service. Unfortunately, I can't locate the videos in my home "stash" from this time. I converted them to digital but am still looking. THANK YOU for sharing these images from the same time frame. It brings back great memories. I'm an old Reading RR fan, later Conrail and enjoy anything from eastern PA about these RR's!!

    My dad worked for the Reading as did his brother who worked this job. In those days there was a scale there and the weighmaster was a Reading employee also. Spent many evenings in that scale shanty listening to the tales of the crew.

    this is fantastic, helper service shoving up grade inside a quarry?? amazing. I sure would have loved to hear what the whitcomb sounded like but what a great sample of locomotives to listen too. Looks as if the RS11 was running out of sand at times. thanks so much for another great video

    This is pure eargasm, and a nice review of those operation over the years. Such operations can be much more enjoyable to watch than a class 1 railroad operation in modern times, thos old Alcos, Geeps and GEs sound much better than modern power.

    Is operating an Alco so much different than EMD? What is the reason for pulsing the throttle on the Alco?

  • @fmnut

    @fmnut

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't think the pulsing had anything to do with Alco vs. EMD. I have seen engineers do the same thing with EMD's. I think the engineer was trying to strike a balance between maximum power and wheel slip given the load vs. the extreme grade. He was trying to spot cars which required a greater degree of control than just full throttle balls to the wall going uphill.

    @@mrserious55 The black unit is a U28B!! If you had read my previous comment, you would understand that early U28B units were identical to late U25Bs. P&LE got some of the first U28s, and the black one is one of them. The blue unit is an ex Conrail U23B. Count the power assembly access doors. There are only 6, a later U28B would have 8. Not to mention the radiator areas are totally different between the two. Unit identities and model types can be verified with a little roster research on Google.
