Milking Cows During The Winter on a Small Dairy Farm!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today we are milking cows on a small family farm during the winter. My wife and I are relief milking for my mother and father. So we decided to show you what milking cows is like on a cold winter evening. I apologize for the poor lighting, the barn isn’t exactly a top notch hollywood studio, lol. We hope you enjoy the video. Thank you all for your comments. We enjoy reading them!

My first farm job there was 40 cows and about 500 sheep. The stable held 20 cows. Next to the milking stable there was a loafing area. During the winter half the cows were locked in. After morning milking we let them all out to eat silage around the Lazy Suzanne and hay while we cleaned and bedded the stable. No gutter cleaners. We had a 12 by 30 foot silo on the end of the barn that we blew sawdust up and stored it there for bedding the stable. The barn was always warm. I miss the sounds of the cows in the stanchions eating hay when there was no other sounds.

It's kinda neat to see you feed cows exactly the same as we do. It's what the infrastructure allows and really it isn't so bad.

Quite a daily routine!!! I recently lost a brother-in-law who was a retired dairyman. We used to buy week old calves from them, and got to see the milking activities firsthand. He took a lot of pride in doing things right. His later evening routine included a last check on the bulk tank, the cattle, and an electric fence that let the cows have access to a small pasture.

Love it and miss it everyday. I am young compared to most commenters late 20s. The family farm was something i miss every day. We wheel barreled corn silage from 2 silos attached to our 40 head barn. Forked it out of the silos by hand even. It was so fun to climb the silo and play on thr pile with my cousins. The threw small square bales of hay down for thr cows. And had a 100 gallon feed cart we used for dry grain that feed the whole barn in one load. Pushed everything shoveled everything and forked everything else. Simple and it always worked. Never broke down. You enjoy what you have more when you work for it. Thank you all for bringing back my memories of these good times. My offer still stands as well. If you need help with anything, I would be right over. Your friendly neighbor from Minnesota.

back in my younger years, late 60's early 70's, thru corn out by hand from the silo-16x60, for 120 head, put it in the wheelbarrow, a load to four cows , twice a day, then feed the feed with a push cart, throw down 12 bales per side, twice a day! man, I'm tired just thinking about it!
