MilitaryChefs.com - Recipe for Success (Interviews B-Roll)

www.MilitaryChefs.com - Interviews and B-roll of story "Recipe for Success." Food Service Specialists encounter a problem with the dining facility at the start of River Assault 2012 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. With military precision, they tackle the problem by shutting down, moving, and setting up a new dining facility in less than 24 hours. Normally the process takes up to 3 to 5 days. River Assault 2012 is a training exercise that tests the skills of combat engineers by building a floating bridge over the Arkansas River. Includes soundbites from Spc. Amberlynn Walker from Pueblo, CO, 308th Military Police Company (Fort Carson, CO), Sgt. Adrian Bouchee from Chicago, IL, 863rd Engineer Battalion (Darien, IL), and Maj. Gen. William M. Buckler, Jr. from Southside, AL, 412th Theater Engineer Command (Vicksburg, MS). Produced by Spc. Mark O'Rear, 326th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment.

@@keithrajoy6333 It depends on what you want. GI Bill? 36 months, that's three years, not the typical four. Want to cook as your job in the military? Go for it if that's your interest. Age means little unless you're in your 40's or in bad physical fitness

Some of the best food I had was going through recondo school at Ft Carson. The field kitchen they had located in an old Quonset hut was probably some of the best food I experienced in bare base ops. The kitchen chief was a MSGT who did wonders for the students and instructors alike.

This was a cool video. Taking pride in what one does is very respectable to begin with. It is even more respectable when one has to make the best of something with what they are given. However, what really hit home was watching football one Thanksgiving and seeing culinary Specialists delivering meals in a combat zone via M113 APC. I never forgot seeing that after decades.

Air Force vet from 87-95. It's true that the AF has the best food. Even the 6 months I spent in Middle East during Desert Storm. I had experienced other services chow and did not compare. Of course anything is better than an MRE. I hear they are much better now than from when I was in.

I had not eaten Army chow since when stationed in Thailand, and finding that their food there at the Army base I visited was better than the food the Air Force was serving at the base I was stationed at. The main difference was the Army had their military cooks who prepared, and served the food, whereas the Air Force had civilian contractors hired to help prepare the food, and to serve it. The Army food was served to the personnel, and they had to return their trays to the window where the trays, and plates was cleaned by military personnel. At the Air Force bases the food was served by the civilian staff who didn't care about the quality of what they was serving, and people ended up getting rocks, and worms in the food. That is why I preferred to eat at the Army base when off duty.

Don't know about this, but I would love the challenge of cooking at sea. I have had several cooking businesses and have been successful. I have cooked for large numbers, but not this many. I know I would not have access to passion fruit or mangos, but I could sure spice that corn up with some lightweight, curry powder. Garlic lasts well, ginger lasts well. I would love the challenge. Alas, I would have to join the navy.

Do we ever consider if we fed soldiers with high quality grass fed meats, organic products, adequate amounts of sleep - we would perform better, not have as many suicide rates, and work performance would be as what we wish it to? But No...the chain of command expects expectations from our soldiers that are impossible for how the lifestyle is lived. Such a shame.

The quality of the cooking does not matter in the Army. It's about how hard you work, your lack of intellect, literacy, and your attitude of "embracing the suck". That's what makes a good soldier! It's the Army, the food is supposed to be low grade school cafeteria style at best! No cook in the Army goes on to be a gourmet chef unless they worked for a General or get out pursuing a career in the real world with some culinary education.

Military chefs, now that's a contradiction of terms. In the mid 80's the food was bland and tasteless, just like the school lunch meals in K-12. You had to heavily salt, pepper, butter and/or hot sauce everything if you wanted any flavor. The only descent meal was breakfast in the mess hall, all meals cooked in the field were nasty.
