Military vehicle carries unexploded WW2 bomb through deserted streets of Plymouth

An unexploded Nazi bomb which was discovered in a back garden in Plymouth has been driven through the streets and taken out to sea for disposal.
Hundreds of residents were evacuated from their homes as the military removed the 500kg explosive, which is believed to date back to the Second World War.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the device is now submerged at a "safe depth" in the sea and Royal Navy divers will plant an explosive charge on it within the next 24 hours.

My wife’s uncle was in bomb disposable during World War 2, he was killed during the transportation of the same size bomb on the back of a Lorry. She still has the letter which informed the family of his death and the circumstances.

Would have been worth mentioning how it was discovered by the home owner who struck it with his shovel, while digging out foundations for an extension! It could so easily have levelled that whole area!

There was a ww2 bomb discovered up the road when building the new bridge in Yarmouth. That did go off. There must be so many more undiscovered underneath us.

Did the MOD really call it "the largest peacetime evacuation since World War II? Such short memories, as In fact, it is just the largest evacuation in Devon since 2021! Almost twice as many homes had to be evacuated in Exeter when a "Hermann", twice the size of this bomb, had to be detonated in situ.

Those damn Germans are amazing engineers even to this day. The fact that it still is a ticking bomb says a lot.

Reminds me of about a decade ago when the Coasties had been having a rant about pyrotechnic expiry. I ended up discussing it with the country's most experienced ammunition and pyrotechnic expert. His position was that if that stuff really expired then the next time somebody found an unexploded German bomb under London, we could safely ignore it. A point well made!

They wouldn't be insured. It was dropped during wartime and insurers won't cover losses from acts of war. So that first woman was right to be concerned.

After 80 years the detonator would have completely corroded. There was no chance of it going off
