Here's a Tip for the ALICE Frame. Once you get it set up, get some Pipe Insulation from the Hardware store and cover the exposed parts of the frame, including the flat cross members. The padding helps a lot when you get humping. Also, if you can get a shelf for the Frame, you can put a 5 Gallon Bucket in the pack, then shove your Snivel gear around it. You can keep your Kit Dry (if you have a Lid for the Bucket) plus you have something to sit on at camp. But you need the Shelf. Hope this helps.

Wow man! I would have lost that bet... But you're absolutely right! I just had to go check, and sure enough, two USGI 20 rnd M14 mags slide right in. Almost a better fit than the 30 rnd m16 mags. Only one thirty round p-mag though. Thanks for the info!

Another pro of these over newer packs is how easy field repairs are

As a civilian, I won't be carrying the weight as a soldier needs to, I found packing the large Alice "wide & tall & narrow" and not "out" or just "stuffed" makes backpacking with a Alice more enjoyable, I try to do the same for the medium Alice, but being smaller you end up with more "out", but the pack doesn't hang like a "stuffed" large, I prefer the slightly larger and heavier OD green frames than the black frames, just a little longer and fit me better, you may be different, not much is better for the price than a Alice pack, problem is they are addicting and you may end up with a small collection of them, as 1 person has said, it can get ruckdiculous!

@3RiverBlades great video. My first Alice as teenager was getting it as a gift from my Dad. One of the best packs I've ever used.

The Mystery Ranch Guide lite frame fits the large Alice pack perfectly. definitely a better ride than the medieval torture USGI frame.

I've never had an issue with the ALICE frame. I even changed out my USMC FILBE main ruck plastic frame with an ALICE and put back on all the FILBE gear and even rides better than the original plastic. Alot has to do with that original ALICE hip pad.

The biggest issue i've found with my alice frame is that its too long for my torso. Or rather, the strap locations don't allow it to actually sit on my hips, it rides on my ass instead, so basically none of the weight is transferred and all the waist belt does is try to pull my pants down and my shoulders have to do all the work. I'm thinking of adding a bar a few inches below the top bar and using that to attach the top of the straps in order to make it sit higher on my back.

When I got out, I bought the small one for it was hard to get them as they were still in use (80's). I took the card I had that went into the clear sleave to ID the pack as yours and Unite and put into my personal one to remind me of that time.

Also put some sheep skin on the shoulder straps and waist belt . all these years not a problem just handed them over to the grand kids they love them they have used $ 250 dollar packs and have sold them, and they both say they need only the Alice and a lot of there friends are going to alice I was shocked when they told me that. happy trails Reallybig sent me over.

@@snakedoc565 The one I bought is made by Rothco and honestly marketed as a reproduction. As I'm no expert and have never handled a real Alice pack, you'd better look up videos addressing that specific subject; they have a lot of good pointers. I did get the second pack, (also a large, picture was confusing) and it honestly said it was a batch made in Germany. Definitely not an original as it's woodland digital camo. Also I can tell the material and coating are much more modern than the Vietnam war era materials. Should be just as good, though...

My country army still using our version of knock off ALICE both L and M sizes, the quality is quite poor but for the L size is not bad except it quite badly copy real Alice because those webbings are not quite in the right position, the frame is very good, nothing to complain about it but the worst part of it imo is the straps, they sewed the upper part of straps permanently to the bag itself and not even in the best place for straps to be there which cause the upper part of the frame to press against your back if you heavy load it and straps can’t be taken out but because of this, you can use the back without the frame. It is good for the price, good material, durable and all but for me it’s just “almost good” with it’s not exact copy design like manufacturers don’t know what’s the meaning of this design and decided to to make it simpler but has too many flaws😂. But for the US ones, they’re one of the best design if not “the best”in the world, everybody in the armed forces surely prefer US made of every gear they use😂

The classic 1970s, 1980s cold war alice gear is the best in my opinion, having a U.S. contract production number is made very well , nothing, nothing like that Chinese shity knock off gear garbage 🗑️ when shopping 🛒 look for that contract production number and your golden pony boy . Especially for camping 🏕️ paired with old school 1980s Coleman sleeping bag 👍 .
