This replaces ones made for years by Navistar. After I retired from Mack I worked for several other companies as a specialist consultant. One was a tier one supplier for rear vision systems and they made them for the old Navistar version until the government ended the contract. That was a job to determine the cost of the stop of orders.

A Mack R cab was the most durable truck Mack ever made with the exception of a few of the L series. I was handed a 1974 DM800SX new and it never ran well nor did it stay together. The cab broke, the frame broke, doors fell off, the springs always broke One day a Mack rep came out to the pit we were hauling out of, he foolishly told us that "there wasn't a man alive that could break a DM800 Mack. He climbed int a cab and before the truck left the pit, he had a broken axle. Mr. Mack could not believe it. We replaced the axle and off they went. different truck popped another axle right behind the first. Of course we all carried spare axles and changed them ourselves. This was at Weyerhaeuser Snoqualmie in 1975. I got to go back to my old (1968) R600 with a quadraplex and was as happy as could be. All trucks had 14yd rock boxes and since we ere hauling off highway they were loaded to spillover. That was the beginning of a slow decent to VOLVO....

Singles are a JOKE in wet ground. I'd rather have a 5-ton that this in a really rough place. Never had any trouble with the old Continental multi-fuel engines either. Needed a 10 or 13 under. 10 would be fine. More split gears. And a jake would be nice but you can gear down enough. 'C' models are all right on the road but not off in a hole. 5-tons any day.

No double steer tires? If this drives into something, it's got no way of steering on one damage steer axle. You'd think that they would of tested it on sand from the middle east, considering that they do must of their work over their. Drive by your local Alison transmission shop and see how full it is of trucks. Automatic transmission in trucks are problem free for 2/3 years and that's driving on home soil. Let's see these autos in action overseas.

The cab is about normal sized for a North American vocational truck (dump trucks and the like). Its not like the highway big rigs, which has sleeper cabs. Besides, its to be operated by fit and trim soldiers, so its not much of a problem. And it looks just as comfortable as the civilian version.
