    I like paint the face and hands of the figure with oil paint. It blends very well. But I found difficulty in painting eyes and eye balls of 1/35 and 75 mm figures with oil paint. Will a video solely focus on eyes painting available? Please.

    As someone who is a total novice in painting with oils, I sincerely appreciate how exceptional an explanation and tutorial this is for skin tones. I haven't painted a face in 15+ years, but the more I work with larger scale figures the more necessary it becomes for me to learn how to work with flesh painting. Thank you so much for the knowledge, it's greatly appreciated!

    Hmmm, that’s a tough one. It varies every time I paint. But if I can set a guide I’d say I use about a brush full of thinner to a pea size dot of paint... as a rough starting point. Then tweet it from there. Does that make sense? I hope that helps. Feel free to ask me any questions. Cheers.

    Ugg, i currently try to paint a leather cushion , but i think maybe i put the wrong acrylic color beneath , my plan is make a orange, brownish leather. So i put a dark/chocolate brown base acrylic, then try to put Raw Siena above...... it such a mistake, if i put the paint thin as you do, it too translucent and just only can tint the dark brown base. If i put a thicker more heavy ammount of paint, it leave huge brush mark.... I really still need to learn a lot. did you know any article or book talk about using oil paint to painting that suitable for our miniture/modelling need ?

  • @SmallSoldier

    @SmallSoldier

    5 жыл бұрын

    Try using a lighter base colour such as tan. This is a great starting point for leather. By using a lighter shade you can build up the tones from light to dark a lot easier. Try letting the first layer of oils dry a couple days then go back in and bump the shadows and highlights a second time and if needed you can repeat it again so you get nice contrasts. A good book is called Painting Miniatures by Danilo Cartacci, it's published by Auriga Publishing International. I hope this answered your questions. Cheers, Scott

    Yep, that is a problem. If you add oil straight without thinning it the area becomes over-saturated and blending gets really difficult. Thin the paint down, add thin layers. It's better to use less paint and to spread it as thinly as possible, this will give you the best blending situation. And don't forget to blend with a clean dry brush.

    Depends on a lot of things really. Weather factors in a lot as if it’s dry like in Calgary probably 2-3 days on the pallet. Depends on the colour as well. I finds white and light colours last longer and the darks such as umbers, blues etc skin overnight and I have to break the skin to get fresh paint from within. Are you laying the oils out on a piece of cardboard first to wick any excess linseed oil from the paint? This is key if you want a more Matt appearance. Let them sit on the cardboard for about 20 minutes, some colors are more juicy than others so they may need longer. Generally I go for about 20 minutes though... try that. You can also add a dull coat varnish after a few days of drying. I use Tamiya flat coat (rattle can) but there are many that work. Hope that helps. Cheers!

    I use acrylics as well. I'll be doing a painting figures in acrylics tutorial in the future. I've never tried the Jo Sonya brand but hear great things about it. Is it the tubes or squeeze bottles you use?

    Is the flow improver like paint retarder?

  • @SmallSoldier

    No, not at all. Paint retarder (as you know) slows the drying time of paint. Flow improver is essentially a product that brakes the surface tension of water and helps acrylic paint flow better off your brush or out of your airbrush. It also helps prevent dry tip when spraying paint from your airbrush. Does that make sense?

    Can you recommend a good book on Figure painting? Do you know if this one is any good? I think it is rather new: www.afvmodeller.com/product/david-parkers-crew-school-pre-order-out-24th-jan-2020/

    Getting closer to the subject would have been better! Too long and not enough narration!

    Yep, could have and probably should have. I guess we learn with each upload. Narration is a taste thing. Everyone looks at it differently. Personally, I hate full narration through a video, I just want to hear what's necessary. As far as length goes you can't please everyone some want more some less, I just provide what I know and explain as much as I can in detail.
