Always a great presentation. Refernece to the China Service Medal (start 16.17). The Secretary of the Navy can and did award the China Service Medal to members of other services. Prior to WWII, personnel from A and B companies of the 15th Infantry Regiment were awarded the medal for their participation with the Marines in defending the International Zone in Shanghi in late 1937 early 1938. Following WWII Army (and later Air Force) personnel were awarded the China Service Medal for taking part in affecting the Japanese Surrender in China and occupation (Operations Beleager 1945-49), and for personnel who where casualties during the 1st Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1954. The Navy had some interesting rules regarding the awarding of this medal to personnel and units following WWII. A unit or individual could only receive on medal per tour of duty. If a sailor/Marine served on occupation duty in Japan/Korea and then was sent to China on the same tour, they were ineligible for the China Service Medal. During the Korean War the same rules applied; although the order of priority was Korean Service, Occupation Service, then China Service. If a ship supporting operation in Korea, and then later conducted operations in Chinese waters, there was no award for the China portion of the tour. The same rules applied to the awarding of the Yantze River medal; however, the 15th Infanty Regiment records do not show the regiment detachment a complete company to that effort, only individuals.

great stuff! interesting factoid about the purple heart, so many were ordered in anticipation of the invasion of japan some were still being awarded 70+ years later during the global war on terror.

My mother served in the WAVES in WW II. I wish the Navy though as much as the Army about the women who served. All services should have had a women's medal.

Why a seperate medal for women and not the official medals which were instituted for ALL armed personnel?

@@G1CAAAAEO Many of the women who did exceptional deeds were seldom given medals. And on those rare occasions, the medals were not comerserate to what a man doing that would have recieved. The fact that the Army gave the women a simple medal to honor the ENORMOUS contribution that women served in Europe, Asia and the home front was telling. The Navy should have done the same.

Precedence refers to what PRECEEDS what. NOT what predesses something. "Predesense" is not a word!
