This is truly disgraceful, military families having to depend on food pantries to feed their families. These people are standing ready to defend our freedoms and our lives and they cannot afford to support themselves and their loved ones is a sin.

Sounds like even our military service members need their pay raised to a living wage. Many jobs in the military are also not just 40 hours a week. They get no overtime pay when they are pulling 60 or more hour weeks. Our men and women in uniform deserve better than this.

This issue affects military and non-military families equally but I'm not sure why you would assume the military doesn't pay a "living wage". A low ranking E-4, married with one child, in Virginia Beach (the example they used) makes $30K/year in base pay, $21K/year in housing allowance and $4600 in BAS (food allowance) for a grand total of $55,600 annually. That's not bad money for a junior enlisted person who will continue to get raises as they gain rank and time in service. I'm not sure where you live but in my area a 22-23 year old making $55K/year is doing pretty well.

This is not new. In the 80's as an air force family, air force members were given free meat rations. 5lbs of free beef a month....because we were so underpaid. Also, the commissary serving overseas leaves A LOT to be desired both in prices, and quality. Todays military is a bit better than it was years ago, but the problems still exist.

Where have you all been? This has been going on over 40 years. Time stamp early 70s my wife and I survived near a full week on a bag of popping corn, after paying our rent as there was always insufficient base housing. Went on like this my last 2yrs so yes I got out. It's no better now I had to retire as businesses routinely discriminate against the elderly and disabled. Tried as last effort to use the GI bill to start a home business. Guess what the v.a.rep in Bridgeport CT told me. Read it carefully " GUESS YOU SERVED AT THE WRONG TIME "! Go wave your flags this weekend and don't forget to do so again in Nov. For vets.day. America land of the free and home of the f#!&%d remember the veterans at least, you do so little else for them. As it turns out you can use the GI bill to do much with if you SERVED after 9/11. Those from before can only buy a home. Could not get work in my field when I got out because as I was told by an H.R. rep.with what was then known as Ma Bell after 1yr trying," We have to hire so many people in minority status even with no experience. This we have to do in order to get our rate increases to pass thru the govt." I thought then as now are not veterans a minority also, but unlike civilian minorities they sometimes have an arm or leg blown off or more. Let this news story wake you all up. It is how things are and have been for YOUR military for a damn long time. Too late for those like me from another era. All veterans have pride in their service, many have lost their dignity thru no choice of their own other than volunteering. Fix what is obviously broken or you America may no longer have the finest military on God's green new deal earth.

I mean, doesn't help businesses throw away over 100 TONS (81.4 BILLION lbs to be exact) of food each year. So maybe we need to start re-evaluating what is done with food and in turn force companies to reduce prices, because I'm sorry, but the fact America alone throws out over 100 tons of food a year is sickening, especially with how many people go hungry each year.

SNAP won't do them much good. I only make $674 social security per month, making me eligible for only $86 food stamps per month. At $21,000 per year, they won't be eligible.

How about spending less on military contracts and more on paying the service members a living wage?

If you live near a military post, you would see what they spend money on. Pay to own businesses, there are businesses that will sell you anything as long as you fill out a allotment form. Meaning they get their money straight out of your check.

Okay so this just goes to show that we don't pay the people who protect our nation ENOUGH AT ALL!! WE NEED A SERIOUS RE-ASSESMENT OF OUR PRIORITIES! HOW MUCH IS YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF YOUR FAMILY WORTH TO YOU?? We can't keep paying our warriors starvation wages!! We just have to do more!!!

You should see these fools start families on enlisted salaries and try to be middle class!?!? They get FREE housing! No sympathy coming from a former enlisted who lived like an animal in the barracks working 15 hours a day, maybe more! Those married people vanished at 4:30 PM.
