I was there! The mood of this solo was unbelievable, I still remember this and I was looking for it on you tube. it's great even on video, but everyone was there was astonished... Miles HAD to stop and raise Margitza's hand or the crowd wouldn' stop clapping...
Thank you for that great instant of music! Rick was so good already
he's a great player. If you have ever done a Rick Margitza transcription (you can find some online) you would notice how incredibly difficult they are even if they don't sound super technical. His lines are incredibly angular and don't sit well under the hands. Like him or not, he's a heavy cat. And one of the few students Brecker took on.

Rick had transcribed all of Brecker's solos while in High School. I went to High School with Rick in Dearborn MI. We always knew he'd be amazing.
Crazy dry tone...love it...green olives and sour dough man.
Yes legendary solo
Isso é absurdo, um solo totalmente louco, mas tudo se encaixa. Isso é definição do jazz
Ya Rick, you sound great!
miles quotes "so in love" by cole porter beginning of solo. nice!
u r great player rick and always u r ..
Whoah! Talk about motific development....!

You nailed it! Motific development is the atomic structure of music!
That's as much of an endorsement as anyone in jazz ever needs!
To bad for the glitches, if you want to hear a much better sound quality of this then search for Miles Davis Montreaux 1989

thanks, that was driving me nuts
Yes Sir!!!!
we used trade cassette of margitza and I never had any of him w/Miles. finally!!!!
Little have I known that Rick Margitzer can throw a "tenorized", saxophonic punch when he does exactly that - with majestic gusto. Rick with Miles!
Ufffffffffff yesssss
Wow, tone, ideas, incredible! What make/model of horn is he playing?
Bad Ass
Miles doesn't fire people who can't really play, because he doesn't hire people who can't really play.
@Thefilmrat The lion was there! I've seen him.
@saxophile1, you aren't much of a saxophile if you're not hip to Ricky!
@saxophile1 Check them out. They are all great musicians. And listen to Rick tear stuff up on it.
Too bad about the speed/pitch glitches, but a great post nonetheless. Imagine the pressure, considering the tenor players Miles has had in his bands. Nice showing for a young punk, Rick.
Margitza is the shizt
@saxophile1 Hey man. You should double-check your resources before you post things on here. It's kind of like thinking before you speak. Rick Margitza is one of the top tenor players on the scene today. He is on a lot of stuff. He definitely made it. Also, I feel like it's impossible to not make it after playing with Miles.
@saxophile1. It is stunning how people can be proud of their ignorance. If you don't know Rick Margitza, that's too bad for you (what kind of "saxophile" does not know this player?). If you cannot even recognize any of the other names, that shows very little musical exposure. For the rest of us, Margitza remains a major talent recognized by all the great contemporary players (maybe names like M Davis or M. Brecker would do it?). Check out his work with the Moutin Reunion Quartet.
i see this video a lo t of time ago and i always think he was steve grossman jajajajaj
one chord jam In key of A
No drugs needed
I always thought kenny’s was great but this one????
Kind of cute at first, but then he sleeps I'll piped into a bunch of cliches, which isn't surprisibg, since that type of music "demands"a certain type if musical "orgasm without any foreplay. Ha ha ha.No big deal.
マーギッツァ...下手くそ落書きソロ
If you know mile's music, then you know he didn't fit in. Of course he plays great.
