Milan, Italy 10 Things You Should Know Before Travelling in 2022

I've travelled to Milan numerous times and I've decided to compile a list of 10 things you should know before planning your trip to this wonderful city. In this video we are going to check out the “national” drink that is older than Italy itself, explore how the future sustainable living in Europe might look and more importantly answer the question “How did Milan become the birthplace of the iconic Italian fashion names and why was it not Rome, Florence or Venice?"
I'm hoping that these tips will help you to plan your trip to Milan! Also, if you have any tips about Milan, please share them in the comments below.

    This quite accurate. As a Milanese I would add that if you're staying more than 2-3 days, there are plenty of offbeat places you can visit in the reclaimed industrial parts of the city, like Mudec in the Via Savona district or Hangar Bicocca in the - you've guessed - Bicocca district or even the Monumental cemetery and nearby Chinatown (via Paolo Sarpi), with the new ADI design museum. Another *very* Milanese district is the elegant corso Vercelli and nearby piazza Wagner, which is not a tourist attraction and therefore truly authentic. Just one thing, don't have a meal in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, it's inordinately expensive and, frankly, a tourist trap. As a rule of thumb, if most of the patrons are not Italian, stay away. Finally,Milan is a big city, but it's not very large, so it's relatively easy to move around. Just beware that public transport is OK in the centre, but not so great as you move outwards.

    @@liz-pf3iv unless things changed in the last decade since I left Italy, BUSINESS owners and bouncers CANNOT ask for ID legally (and dont care about it). But they can refuse entry or to serve you if you look far too young. It never happened to anybody I know tho and I was a bouncer for many years. FYI only Polizia and Carabinieri are entitled to ask you for ID legally and hotel receptionist can ask to withhold your passport or other forms of ID overnight to fill up documents that get forwarded to Police periodically. If anybody else asks you to show your ID outside a legit business like car rentals etc be suspicious.

    I'm from Milan: trust me, stay well away from Vittorio Emanuele Gallery for eating. They are EXTREMELY expensive places and basically tourist places only. Find a spot on the Navigli, like "posto di conversazione" restaurant, to have a decent cost/food situation. Also, while it's true that tap water in Milan is absolutely safe, the bottled water does NOT come, AT ALL from the same place of tap water. Each brand of bottled water comes from a specific source, sometimes even 1000km far from Milan and, 90% of the time from a mountain source. Finally: Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, is not a "shopping center". Yes it has shops in it (and super expensive ones), but that's a monument! Built in honour of the then King Vittorio Emanuele

    As an Italian resident, we DO NOT classify Starbuck's as coffee. Ludicrous drinks for tourists. Another handy tip - don't go to Milano in late July until around 20th. August. Nearly everyone is on holiday and you'll only find stifling heat and several million mosquitoes.

    9:50 I will add a curiosity to your already very detailed and professional video. At the Columns of San Lorenzo the Edict of Milan was proclaimed in 313 after Christ, decided by the Emperor Constantine (that's why there is a statue of him). At that time Milan was the capital of the Roman Empire, from that square the Christian religion was proclaimed Religion of the Empire, and therefore the Christians stopped being persecuted.

  • @henrykirk1136

    @henrykirk1136

    The church of San Lorenzo was only built later in the fourth century, the columns are older but were likely moved from elsewhere, the statue of Constantine is a 19th century copy of a statue in Rome, and the Edict of Milan, were it to have been dictated, would have been far more likely to have been proclaimed either in a state basilica, the imperial palace (as it was decreed by the western caesar and augustus) or in the forum as would have been customary for an Edict. The Edict of Milan, whose existence is debated, did not make Christianity the religion of the empire, as this didn't happen until Theodosius' Edict of Thessalonica in 380. Milan, as one of the western capitals of the Roman empire, was particularly important in early Christianity because of the relationship between Theodosius and Ambrose in the later 4th century, which can be seen in the architecture of the city, and the perculiarity of the persisting Ambrosian rite in the Diocese of Milan. Unfortunately though, while there is a long, fascinating history to the church and the columns, they and the statue of Constantine are more of a nice homage to the importance the city had in the Christian tradition than they are themselves in that way important.

    Great video and tips. I'm doing about 15 day Euro Trip next year in late February. Yes it's winter, but going from winter in Toronto to there will feel great lol. I fly through Lisbon (I see your Sintra guide!), likely will do Barcelona and Madrid as well. If I do end up doing Milan, how many days would you recommend staying there? Your guide is a 48 hour one, but would 3 or 4 days be good? Originally I was planning to do 5 days in 3 different cities, but now it seems 5 days isn't fully taking advantage of my time in Europe. Instead I could do 4 days and see 4, or even possibly 3 days and see 5 cities. What Given the cities I listed, what would you recommend?

  • @ClassicPolly

    @ClassicPolly

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah I feel you, winter in Southern Europe is a little milder than in Toronto. I'm based in Tallinn so our winters are very similar to yours. Re Milan,I would say 3-4 days is more than enough if you want to explore the city at a more relaxed pace. If you are happy to jam-pack your days then in 48hr you will be able to see pretty much all major attractions in Milan. In general, I would recommend at least 4 days in each city, it will be less stressful that way. Lisbon-Madrid-Barcelona-Milan sounds like a great Eurotrip to me :)

I don't really liked the shop but i'm a sucker for caramel so frappuccino was kinda obligatory. Everything else was kinda meh. Also the idea of living in milan was so depressing i preferred to move daily with trains.

    hi, thanks for the video, was wondering how the public transport works as it is still confusing to me. how do you validate it and if within the 90 minutes you are changing from bus to train do you validate it again?

  • @ClassicPolly

    @ClassicPolly

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Mia. On teams you validate your ticket once you are in the team (there is a calculator and it stamps your ticket) and it’s active for 90 min, meaning you can get off this tram and use another means of public transport for the duration of your ticket. In metro you will punch in your ticket to open the metro gates and same when you get out. As far as I know in metro you can use your ticket for 90min but as soon as you leave the gates of the metro you can get in with the same ticket.
