MikroTips: managing many access points with CAPsMAN
Ғылым және технология
=== IMPORTANT NOTE ===
This is and old video for our older devices running older RouterOS versions. If you have a 802.11ax compatible (newer) device, it uses the new Wifi CAPsMAN settings, for more information, please see: help.mikrotik.com/docs/displa...
=======================
UPDATE: Before you start, important note! Some devices have disabled the "local forwarding" setting in the capsman configuration template "datapath" tab. This tutorial assumes you have it checked. Some defices have different defaults, so just mark this checkbox to follow the steps in this tutorial. Local forwarding must be on!
When you have one MikroTik access point, but want to add another one to widen your coverage, follow this tutorial and use CAPsMAN to manage as many APs as you want.

Great to see you guys are doing these videos! Been a fan since replacing a Cisco device at work with an RB2011 years ago. I have Capsman setup at home with hEX S, hAP AC, and hAP AC Lite combo with 3 wifi VLANs. Most solid wifi experience I've had! It's not for the faint of hearts, though.
I followed you guide and managed to have my RB Cap AP to connect to the capsman running on another RB device. Thank you for such a simplified guide.
Bonjour, Hola, G'day Normunds! Great start to a capsman learning series! Please consider adding bridge/vlans + capsman for a next video to address the very common home scenario of having multiple WLANS (home, guest, media, iot).
Excellent explanation, awesome video editting and beautiful scene setup with the mic and the shadows. Keep up the good work, I'll try this at home
Nice guide. It would be good to see a guide about how to setup the firewall, something that would be very useful for the home user.

I have only just gotten my cAP integrated, and in my testing device (wifi analyzer on lenovo tablet), I am seeing that while you don't lose connection, it takes a minute to switch its radio over from the RB4011 to the cAP. I think sometimes, "seamless roaming" is dependent on the client device that's doing the roaming.
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. However, it was necessary for me to activate under Datapath> Bridge>" Bridge". It would also be great if the video explains how I put Vlan on my cap. A Vlan video in general would be great. Keep it up!

I love the sound setup with "shotgun" microphone on a boom like real filmmakers do. Finally great sound without some big cardioid in view or a lavaliere with "chest" sound.
There is a mistake in the video. If you follow it as it is, you'll be able to ping outside but not browse. You need to add a datapath to the capsman for the bridge that will have the ports your CAPs are connected to.

Very useful! Would be nice a part2 with advanced features. Thx!
nice and simple tutorial
Every time I listen to a Mikrotik video, I take it as an history class.. Seing how things were done 4 decades ago. Everything is easy, as long as you read instructions and "how to" for years before you attempt anything. In this era of shortage of everything, CLI and interfaces such as these has no place anymore. I come from an era before the IP stack existed. So I know. I.e. mac address only & 1BaseT. You read correct. 1BASET. And token rings. In the early 80's, I expected interfaces to be far more evolved than that.
I understand Mikrotik doesn't like to bind user to certain workflow, but it'd be great if the guide can be titled to show the general structure of an application
I hope that there are configuration tutorial videos of different Mikrotik unit being uploaded to youtube for reference of all Mikrotik users like me.

Hello! Could you help me with a Cloud Hosted Router OS Mikrotik ? I'm making a lab in EVE-NG, and in my version of mikrotik i can't tune the wireless interface. It does not exist in the interface list and in PCI Resourses too. VMDK image 6.49.6 Stable is installed in the lab.
I grappled with Capsman to manage a single access point...I know it's much more practical when managing a large number of access points, but a couple of model specific observations here. I am noticing that while the RB4011 is brilliant in every other way, as are all Mikrotik products, it is buggy with Capsman, and not friendly with my cAP ac....Particularly when it comes to integrating the built in wireless with the AP. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I was finally able to integrate all four wireless interfaces under Capsman. I know this is a known issue with the RB4011, but with a little work, it is not insurmountable. Is there an OS update due to address this quirk in the RB 4011?

Is it possible to enforce a mac address access list throught capsman?
I've followed this process, but don't see the second access point on the remote CAP menu. I can manually connect them with an ethernet cable and provision it that way, but they still don't seem to see each other once I disconnect the ethernet cable. Has anyone had this problem?
I have an issue with revoked certificates breaking this setup and find no docs on how to issue a replacement without having to reset any existing configurations, This is with layer 3 capsman. I get a message about sulking and I’m using the standard mutual TLS with request certificate option on the cap. Pointers would be useful. I have multiple APs.
Will there be a guide to how to set this on the new wifiwave2 routers ?
Remember a important settings: In CAPsMAN | CAP Interface | each cap settings, at Datapath Tab, Choose Bridge1 or other. I lost few days with this. I setup few times, but wifi clients cannot take IP. Now it's Ok.

Is it possible to access my Mikrotik router over the internet when I am not within the local network coverage?
Have a Mikrotik access point which used to obtain IP adresses for its WiFi client devices via dhcp from my main non-wifi-capable Mikrotik router. I did set up a mesh configuration following your guide as I was adding another Mikrotik AP to my system. Yes and no. 1) it will not be this easy, manual configuration is involved 2) capsman can't manage itself anymore, only others (because it needs internal wireless AP where the CAP devices will connect to, to get their configs) 3) CAP devices need to either: 3a) sacrifice one of their interfaces for the management connection, for example 2GHz will be in CPE mode and connected to CAPSMAN, but the 5GHz will be the managed AP 3b) or you can use repeater mode (have client / AP mode on same interfacew), but that takes a big performance hit

01. Datapath must be set to bridge for devices to receive IPs via dhcp. 02. In the Datapath settings tab, I had to enable Local Forwarding for better bandwidth over wifi. Failure to turn on Local Forwarding caused a heavy load on the main router's CPU, which resulted in half or even less bandwidth, especially on the 5 GHz band. 03. There is no possibility in CAPsMAN for setting the Frequency Mode to Superchannel, and that made me gave up CAPsMAN. Without CAPsMAN with normal wifi configuration I have over 20dBi on cAP ac (RBcAPGi-5acD2nD) and with CAPsMAN enabled only 17dBi (on 5 GHz wifi interface), that resulted in poor or no wifi connection in some spots of the house.
