MIKOYAN MIG 29M OVT Vectored Thrust Demo - Farnborough (airshowvision)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Quite simply one of the most legendary fast jet demos of recent years, showing the possibilities available to a pilot when he has 360 degrees of Vectored Thrust to play with.
This aircraft is one of the Mig29M prototypes, retro fitted with 360 degree thrust vectoring nozzles, enabling it to turn within its' own axis and produce the amazing manouvers you see here, including the backflip, the super cobra, and the flat spin. All under total control.
Also, during the final part of the display, we see the pilot stop playing around and open the jet up and really let rip with a very high speed rolling loop, for me possibly the highlight of the display.
This aircraft is still in this colour scheme, but sadly, like most Russian fighters rarely ventures outside Russia, but it came over in 2006 to do Farnborough and the Paris air show. Here is its' moment of magic . . .
Please note the new Airshowvision facebook page is now up and running at: airshowvision

    jees, the first thing you learn as a pilot, is to avoid stall at all costs because it will get you killed on so many levels. Gravity and slow speed makes you become a brick. What do the russians do? They go 'fuck gravity' and ignore any stall warnings and fly that machine like a boss. goddamn

    Political views mean nothing to me as both us the American people and Russian people don't have a matter when it comes to how each of our governments are ran. They both make decisions based on things that are beyond us hard working citizens. No matter how the media or government try to portray each side i have love and admiration for both us here in the USA as well to for the people of Russia. This is a beautiful and amazing piece of technology that the Russians have developed. i refuse to compare American and Russian Technology because both are innovative and i appreciate both in the advancement of technology. the thrust to weight ratio is outstanding in this Vectored Thrust configuration. Bravo Russia this is a beautiful amazing aircraft and i wish i could see it in person. Love and Respect to all the people of Russia.

However, no Russian airplane or radar can detect either the F-22 or the F-35. The Russian aircraft have some advantages if they visually see them. if they don't have a visual, they have no chance. Only the American aircraft are gen 5. by the way, As the Russians and Chinese are trying to 5 aircraft, we are now testing gen 6. The Russian military is quite weak with limited budget and not very many modern fighters.

    Spencer P At the same time, those Indian Sukhoi ad MiG jets have multiple times gone up against Pakistan... which uses American designs... and won. Also, he has a point regarding Yuhoslavia. It was the same as over Iraq: When you have AWACS and overwhelming numerical superiority over inferior export craft, victory is assured. You "blew apart" an air force using a coalition of most world powers and almost every regional power - congratulations. you can't apply that to a fight on more or less equal terms.

  • @VelmiVelkiZrut

    @VelmiVelkiZrut

    9 жыл бұрын

    Spencer P First off, I agree that not all of your jets engaged the MiGs at once. What I am saying is that when you only have twenty jets total, your options are far more limited and you have to agree that with those numbers it's far easier to get bounced or dived on from an unexpected direction, especially with AWACS direction. Secondly, Yuhoslavia had MiG-29 model B jets. The export version. Export versions are universally crappy compared to the real thing (because no one wants to arm a potential rival), with the Russians being pretty serious offenders as far as export reduction being concerned (last generation radar, no ECM or IFF systems in export models, rendering them extremely vulnerable to a high tech opposition with AWACS or late-gen onboard radar that can identify the targets far before their onboard radar has even a glimpse). You cannot possibly state with any degree of seriousness these were advanced aircraft, not compared to the true Russian equivalents. Of those, only six were downed (one to mistaken friendly fire), four were hit on the ground by cruise missile and tactical bomber strikes, and there were two air-to-air kill claims put forward by the MiGs. Both were denied, and I cannot verify their verity, but the claims were made.

  • @VelmiVelkiZrut

    @VelmiVelkiZrut

    9 жыл бұрын

    gino But they have a huge radar range and will spot incoming interceptors from a distance great enough to then vector fighters onto them or just dive away - during a conventional conflict, interceptors in theory will not pursue a target over its own lines and thus theoretically an air defense network. A missile fired onto a target has a maximum range that is far lower than that of the AWACS onboard radar systems.

    Pavlos Pavlou The slightly better yaw control you get from 3d means absolutely nothing in a combat scenario. If you're yawing your aircraft around post stall like many of the Russian aircraft do in shows then you've bled off all of your airspeed and you're dead. The US experimented with 3dtv with the F-15 STOL/MT and a couple of other aircraft and found little to zero advantage over 2d. The F-22 is a Warfighter. The Su series and Migs are great show planes. Speed is life, not fancy post stall maneuvers.

    I think both Su and F22 have great elements for both long and short distance combats, as well as defense systems. Much is said about abilities, all needed is to just check in combat. Stealth is also questioned, after words that a Raptor was shot by even Syrian ground to air missile. About 2d and 3d VCT, really if no difference at all, then Raptor would not have any in the first place, if useless. Many say about a compromise to use 2d to save costs, but I find it senseless since this plane is not about cost saving at all. What is certain is that if stealth is not a reality, then F35 program would be probably the biggest disaster in the history of US aviation

    Damn that Mig guy hasn't figured out that its a whole lot easier to track a plane visually if it leaves the contrail every where it goes. And everybody arguing stealth this and that, USA has been using stealth technology for at least 50 to 70 years (SR-71). You can bet its been in development since the invention of radar. This is a beautiful and elegant Soviet F/A jet. Soviet jets do it real good.

    SR71 was never stealth... it has a nice strong radar signature and a huuuuuuge infra red signature... It was "simply" deployed too high and flying too fast to be intercepted. It could therefore spy with impunity. That is what spurred the Soviet to develop high altitude/high speed interceptors such as the Mig 25 and Mig 31 and then develop AA systems such as the S300.... AA systems such as the S300 family are some of the reasons why the SR71 was retired. High altitude spying now relies on spy satellites.

    Agreed, please let me clarify the SR-71 ushered in a new breed of aircraft because of the amount of exotic materials used to construct it and the data gleaned from its service on how everything from composites, to titanium skin all the way to the other side like enemy radar tracking, missile data, coastal radar net sensitivity etc. Also my main point is that as soon as radar was able to be used to detect vehicles, there has been research done to get around it.

  • @pjm780

    +John Connor FYI - none of those maneuvers require 3D thrust vectoring. There are plenty of videos of the F-22 doing all of these maneuvers. While it's incredibly cool and fun to watch the nozzles move around, all 3D vectoring really results in a more complicated vectoring mechanism.

  • @pjm780

    @pjm780

    3D thrust vectoring is when the nozzles can move in two dimensions (up-down/left-right). 2D vectoring is when they move in a single dimension (up-down). Yes, it doesn't make much sense when one is actually only moving in two dimensions and the other is only moving in one dimension, but that's how they refer to it. It's a selling point. Granted it's one that can actually do something, but it's something that won't end up being used in the vast majority of situations, because if you put yourself in a situation where you need it, then you've done your job wrong.

    +Anıl Ertürk That's really outdated thinking. It was believed that long-range missiles would make all engagements BVR, that thinking was proven wrong many times over in the Vietnam war and it's why air superiority fighters still exist today. It's also why combat aircraft are equipped with machine guns and pilots trained in dogfighting techniques. Electronic warfare and flares have advanced about as much as missiles and there's never a guarantee that you won't have to engage in a close range dogfight. Might not be the main point, but every small edge can tip over the fight. You're not always going to have the opportunity to shoot BVR missiles at targets 50km away with AWACS guidance.

    aymric If you are at minimal speed (or no speed at all) trying to vertically outmaneuver enemy plane ,3D vectoring gives you still full control over the plane unlike 2D vectoring. And btw future air combat will be propably mostly close range one, because stealth planes are able to detect each other only at close ranges (40 km max)

  • @TheShockwaveDragon

    @TheShockwaveDragon

    +Anıl Ertürk 1.) 3-D Vectoring has been explained by Aymric already. 2.) Ultra-high maneuverability is necessary simply because it's always a good thing to have that much more of an advantage on your enemy, especially if he does not have the ability to vector thrust himself. For example: The Russian and US governments took part in a friendly competition pitting an SU-27 fighter aircraft against an F-15 in a simulated dog-fight. The SU-27 had rudimentary 2-D thrust vectoring capabilities, and the F-15 did not. As a result, the F-15 was unable to escape the SU-27 pursuing it despite the best efforts of the pilots; when the positions were reversed, the SU-27 was able to not only escape and evade the F-15, but it was able to maneuver itself behind the F-15, theoretically putting itself in the position of being able to shoot the F-15 down. Such a scenario is unlikely to happen in real life, but it demonstrated the potential value of superior maneuverability.

    Get's boring reading about how this kind of maneuverability is "irrelevent" in modern dog-fight and air-superiority scenarios. I guess if that's the case the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter must have been well ahead of it's time - it couldn't turn if its pilot's life depended on it, but nowadays it never would, eh?

    dropping to drastically low speeds performing such maneuvers would indeed prove deadly in a real life encounter, cause as it tries to regain speed it would be a sitting duck... but tbh i don't see how having the option to go to high g's as a bad one. In this aircraft you get a wider range of choices, so it is bound to be helpful in some scenarios even if it is rare. And in a dog fight if someone is on your tail and you do something similar to 1:58 by the time ur leveled up again and regaining speed you would be on the enemy's tail who is still trying to turn around to face you
