Sterns playing and composition at this time in his life is some of his best work in my opinion. I met him in Montreal and he was such a sweet and genuine guy. All my best to him.
I was dragged to a free outdoor show of a band I had never heard of that was part of an annual local Jazzfest Weekend that I really did not want to go to by my girlfriend at the time. It was this exact lineup and it was the closest thing to a religious experience that I have ever encountered. It changed my life forever.
So sad that Bob Berg and Michael Brecker are gone, they live on with youtube....thanks for the great post.
That intro was sublime!!!
Miss these two playing together. Man, they could work it! Miss you Bob! Thanks for the great music.....
Maybe Mike Sterns best playing ever ! When he was on fire , incredible , inventive , original .
So this is why Mike Stern became a respected jazz guitarist, wow. Fresh, young, inspired.

He play his ass off. Miles Davis thought so.
Saw these guys in U.K. & Holland both concerts were absolute killer 👏👏 RIP Bob ❤ 🙏
Mike my favorite guitar player !!!!
I really don't care what these guys are wearing, they are moving through musical space effortlessly. Thank you for the post, I wish I had gotten to earlier.
So nice to see Stern in such top shape. He was really in the peak of his sound and abilities during those years. And Berg.... man... what a loss
Best Mike Stern Solo ever
For me one of Mikes best performances that I saw!
My first Mike Stern LP in 1984 ... he is just fantastic !!!
When the musicality & technical woks together we got Mike and Bob or Pat and Mays!
Dennis's eternal bubblegum.
Berg's solo has to be exactly what Stern hoped for from the sax part on a tune like this. Man, was he the perfect sideman for Stern or what? His improve is a beautiful as the composition itself. One of the best Stern/Berg clips out there! Thanks!

Mike Hoffman Wonderful lead in. Seen them together, in concert three or four times. Back in the 80s and early 90s. I miss Bob and those days.

Bob Berg was the perfect sideman Mike Stern and for Chick Corea in a concert in Tivoli, Copenhagen, as well. He got the far biggest applaus' for his soli. Far louder and longer than Chick and the others. Don't remember who else was in the band or the year. Only an lot of jaws dropping when Bob played his soli. Must be getting old. Really? I'm only 73 ;-) At least some of us knew what to expect. He's my all time favorite musician even though I used to play guitar and drums.

There is another sax player who was touring with Mike, and who played even more delicate and spheric, but maybe not that powrrful like Bob Berg, well its Bob Malach, and i heard them live in 1997
Stern is a master at using effects. Taboo to some, but so tastefully used, who can argue?

I love effects. Big Frisell, Rypdal and Thorn fan.
Saw this band back then in Turin, Italy, with Jeff Andrews on bass (great), all the guys played their guts off and the late Bob was a soul shaker... such a heart, such a burning passion blowin' out that tube...I always loved Mike Brecker and always thought that Bob was the natural successor to the great master but... Anyway...that was an unforgettable evening.

Bob is da dude. So much warmth, colour and subtlety in his playing. Not just another shredder. And if he wants to let the horses run wild he does it in style and with grace. Definitely up there with the jazz gods. I keep coming back to his playing time and again.

Sad for you you're not living near Copenhagen, brother. They visited us many times. Saw the with Jeff Andrews as well. As far as I remember a couple of times. Guess we're getting older, Buddy (if it's OK to call you Buddy).

Got to meet Mike backstage at a London concert not that long ago 2019 I think. What a lovely guy, so down to earth - one of the all time greats 🌎

I met his once and he was outright shy. i had to tell him about the first time i listened to him play while standing out in front of a little jazz club in 1983. He was so happy to hear that. yeah, super nice and humble
Saw this tour in Vancouver. Mr Chambers is a monster!!
Good to see that all the clichés about 90s saxophonists are true
I like how Bob Berg just walks off the stage like he's going for a cigarette break.
I really, really dig Mike's style. Unique as hell. ya know how difficult it is to create your own unique voice on electric guitar? there's a reason only a couple dozen have ever done it.
I saw this lineup at the Zephyr Club in Salt Lake City. Got a recording off the board. Spectacular. I had brought Dennis With John Maglaughlin a couple of years earlier, we had a few drinks and chatted, and he kept pulling Mike over to tell him how much I looked like Michael Brecker. Lol

Where are you been these last 30 years dude ? Metheny, Scofield and Stern somehow ruled the jazz planet since the early 80's. Frisell "could be" underrated, I assume to hear that, but Stern...

There's a Yamaha SPX-90 somewhere in the effects loop.
Bob berg!!!
Que boooo, que ets, joan, Catalonia free,💕💕❤️
Adding to Alex's comments, Yamaha gave him the opportunity to design his own signature guitar, and he probably receives a royalty on each one sold, gets lots of free perks from the company, not to mention all the publicity for his own career as he endorses their product.
I wish all saxophonists could play like him ...

I have a Mike Stern Tele.
Perhaps because Fender couldn't (or didn't) build him the kind of guitar he wanted? If I ever get around to buying a Tele, Mike's sig Yamaha still ranks highly on my list.

Yep. My guess: a coil split.
Sadly because the Mike Stern guitar is based on a vintage Tele it comes with same issues. To adjust the truss rod means the neck has to be taken off. The radius is 7.25 and so chokes on hard bending of the top E even when set to 4/64th height. I still like the guitar and have it set where I like it. Have had to shim the neck though and change the bridge to a Wilkinson and the string heights all set with a radius gauge. I have learned so much more about guitars since having it.

And what about the f**king music Mr. Gearhead? That's what this is really about. It is my experience that people who dwell on equipment usually can't play. You might be a hopeful exception. So again I ask, what about the music?
@Happy-Me.

Reply to post. I stoned/levelled the frets which I did myself and put back the original bridge. It plays great now. Definitely a one off and I'm proud of it now!

Maybe you should consider setting it up like Mike does??. He uses light strings (9’s I think he said) and has high action and deliberately ‘bows’ the neck, with a bend in it. His guitar feels weird but it makes sense and you get use to it within a short period of time.
Baixista foi trolado!! Hahaha... Cadê o som do bass??
you want to know what is a solo ? i mean a real solo ? listen to bob berg !
