His memory of all those crazy time signatures and changes through so many songs is insane. I'd love to see some kind of memory test for musicians at this level.

Portnoy has played this song hundreds of times, once it is ingrained in your brain and repeated consistently, it stays with you, plus muscle memory has a lot to do with it also, it becomes second nature, it'd be interesting to see if he can still play it after not playing with DT in many years

He wrote and rehearsed this song many times over. A memory test wouldn’t show anything, it’s not like he learnt the song from listening to it once

I have a horrible memory but I’ve found that when I’m playing songs on the drums (a lot of Rush and DT) that a lot of the time I’m not thinking about when I have to change time signatures or switch the groove, it just comes naturally after playing the song ling enough. However I have been trying to focus more on the specific notes that I play bc my mind kinda wanders off a bit sometimes, and then that’s when I miss a fill or a time change. I’ve also been trying to work on my form bc I’ve never had any lessons but I still have a while to go on that

I think this video is actually a whole day long, by the looks of the size of the kit! 😅 Loved Portnoy in DT, when he was there! Now Mangini is just lost somewhere between the keys and the guitars!

He fucked up his hits and then stopped got up and blamed the drum. That being said I have the utmost respect for Mike P and DT has not been anything like it once was without him

Drum handmade Minidrum Naw he just has a way he likes things and as a professional about to do a drum festival showcase, everything has to be perfect. The tom was out of tune and he also has to command the audio engineers levels because hes the center of the performance for this one. He just expects things to be ready and done before sound checks, including tuning. You have to be commanding as a professional.

Ryan Lanigan Well he’s only used two drum techs ever. So if it wasnt his personally hired techs for his entire career, than it was some nub. Takes a drill sergeant mentality to get it right.

Even at the lower levels, you need to be and strong and clear when delivering your messages to the sound/monitor man. The problem for a drummer is that like for everyone, you only know if your monitor is good if it sounds balanced while the band is playing...every other member of the band can stop playing and shout out their requests during a song, but if the drummer stops, the whole band stops naturally, so a drummer has to package up their monitor changes during the song and deliver them to the soundman when the band has finished playing.

ironically to this comment - if I'm correct - on later versions of the kid (maybe even this one) he had an electronic cowbell pad... which he used to use to count everyone in. It would only be in their in-ears.... so as far as the audience was concerned - they all just nailed it... but they were counted in using this electronic cowbell.
