One of the greatest musicians of all time, and a really nice bloke to boot, good pick👍
I saw him live in 1982. He played this and it was pretty amazing live. He told the story that he climbed the volcano and that adventure inspired the song.

Is 12'000+ feet high. Long arduous uphill trek indeed. I climbed Mt. Katahdin in northern Maine USA, a mere 5,269 feet. That was a long half days task itself. Then had to walk back down. The rest of the day. So can really appreciate Mike's twice as high climb! Would have left an indelible mark upon his soul. Thus the inspiration & the sublime beauty of the song!
I'm from Canary Islands!!! I didn't know máster Oldfield had a song about the Teide! Really cool

Nice!
I grew up with Mike Oldfield’s music from the 80s. Five Miles Out is part of a triplet of albums I listened to constantly, along with Crises and Discovery. Oldfield is a genius.

Love 5 miles out as well.
Fantastic track. Palmer's drums build brilliantly towards the summit, interlaced with Oldfield's airy guitar motifs. Beautiful. I visited Tenerife when I was 17. It's a hugely impressive sight. Teide dominates the island, you can see towering over the landscape from miles away, often snowcapped, even in summer. The landscape around the summit is otherworldly. No surprise that it's been used for location filming for a host of movies such as One Million Years B.C., Intacto, Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans. Fun fact: Brian May wrote the Queen song 'Tie Your Mother Down' at the Observatorio del Teide at Izaña (altitude of 7,770 feet), in the autumn of 1971, while working on his university thesis! Tenerife is a beautiful island - the north is very green and luscious, the south more rugged. It's owned by Spain, like all the Canary Islands, though geographically a part of Africa. [ps - your first attempt at pronouncing it was correct! It's Tay-Dee].

I had quickly pronounced it after reading on the LP backcover as Mt. Tide. lol Thanks for the correction!
Oh man, it makes me very happy that you enjoyed “Mount Teidi”. Such a short, evocative, wonderful piece, with the final, “arriving to the submit” ending crescendo, Carl Palmer does a superlative job here, with beautiful drumming. That little guitar effect I think it mimics a seagull call that Mike most likely heard while climbing the volcano, as it’s in an island. Now we’re getting closer to Mike’s album “Crises”, we’re you’ll probably enjoy Simon Phillips percussion work.
What a music! Thank you Mike! Thank you my parents! Thank you Justin! My ears wait FMO song after this song!
Carl Palmer on Drums here, great feature for this song. The final song, the title track is a unique track but ends the album nicely with Mike and Maggie sharing vocal duities. I think you would enjoy the next album Crisis. Structured similuar to Five Miles Out, except the title track is one of Mikes best compositions. Side 2 includes his biggest hit 'Moonlight Shadow' and some other shorter but great songs.

For some reason, I'd always thought he also drummed on 'Orabidoo', but that must've been a guy named Graham Broad (after having a quick look on the album's Wiki page). And I sure do hope young Justin *will* continue on with 'Crises'! 😉👍

Yeee-Haaa! That's always been one of my favorite short tracks from Mike. Such a concise little gem, and so inimitably Mike Oldfield. Always elevates the heart and the spirit to that mountain top. Such a genius.
The live version on the double CD "The Complete" Mike Oldfield is the superior version with a bigger outro climax to it.

Yep, that was either recorded on the Crises or Discovery and has Simon Phillips on drums.
Only a genius could write this
Yes, come on, Justin! Get it over and done with this album so you're able to finally move on to the amazing 'Crises' one! 😄😉

How many songs has Justin reacted to today. Is it just the Mike Oldfield track, or is there something else. I can't find anything, but doesn't he normally react to two artists? Thanks.

Truly love Mike. Listened as a teenager and now as an almost Senior.
Just as some background, the “whistle” sound that you like and referred as synth is actually electric guitar bending over a whole tone. Oldfield bends in both directions to create a mirror image. So much symmetry in his incredible music.

Ahh gotcha. Thank you Noreen!
Spent a couple of weeks in Tenerife earlier this year. Mount Teide (pronounced "tay-dee") dominates the entire island. It was breathtaking stepping out onto my balcony in the mornings and seeing it looming over us (before clouds inevitably covered the summit later in the day). Had to go up there of course; it's literally like a lunar landscape. I had this tune swirling around in my head for a large part of the holiday.

Nice! Sounds like a great view
Hi Just. Mike Oldfield lived in La Cuesta de La Villa, along the La Orotava Valley...on that balcony he composed this "Mount Teide". Mount Teide "is pure energy. The same energy that struck Oldfield when he visited the Tenerife volcano, which is reflected in this piece dominated by the magnificent percussion of Carl Palmer. As you have said, Teide is a volcano located on the Spanish island of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands archipelago. It has an official altitude of 3,715 meters above sea level and 7,500 meters above the ocean floor, being the highest peak in Spain, that of any land emerged from the Atlantic Ocean and the third largest volcano on Earth from its base in the ocean bed, after Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both in Hawaii. Teide's altitude also makes the island of Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world. Teide is part of the homonymous national park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 28, 2007. It is also a protected natural space in the category of natural monument that encloses the Teide-Pico Viejo volcanic complex, a large stratovolcano of Vesuvian type that has remained dormant since the last eruption of the Narices del Teide in 1798, although the fumaroles that it emits regularly from its crater remain active. Teide is considered the most emblematic natural monument of the Canary Islands. It is also a great tourist attraction that attracts millions of people every year. As anecdotes, say that in many editions of the single, Teide was called Teidi, a typo that continued to appear over several years. And something that many people do not know. This volcano caught the attention of Carl Palmer, who had his residence in the Orotava Valley during the 70s. After the separation of the E.L.P trio, Calr had a lot of free time to plan his new solo album. At that time, Carl Palmer welcomed a collaboration with Mike Oldfield. Actually this song was intended for Carl Palmer's solo album, but Mike was missing one song to complete his album and asked Carl for permission to include it on Five Miles Out. The booklet for drummer Do Ya Wanna Play, Carl? it only mentions that the song belongs to the Five Miles Out sessions, which would explain why the credits were finally attributed to Oldfield. It seems logical that the rehearsals took place at Mike's Denham home studio (now run by his son Luke) before Palmer became involved with the Asia group. And now get ready for what I consider the best song by Mike Oldfield, with the permission of Moon light shadow. Five miles out. A hug
Hi JP. DP from UK. So many different types of music, and such brilliant insight - That Is Why JustJP is the best reaction channel I've heard. And congrats on 30K, Justin. I moved on from Mike Oldfield after Incantations, so I don't really know his later albums apart from the singles. As for this track, the best on the album on first listen. You're right that it's really bolstered by Carl Palmer's drums and percussion. P.S. my song ref That Is Why is by Jellyfish.

Ty Dave!
Simple and full of emotion.
Perhaps my favorite song/piece on 5 Miles Out. So wonderfully beautiful & sublime. The slow buildup to the peak/crescendo gives me goosebumps. Then the sudden stop! Perfect!!!
Loved this track instantly from the first listen. 20 years on and I still love it.
Great song and absolutely love the album!
If I'm not wrong this was the first track recorded for the album. I can hear links to QE2 (the composition) in the background synth/guitar pattern. In fact it sounds a bit as a leftover from the QE2 sessions reworked with drummer Carl Palmer as guest musician.
There's an astronomic observatory on Mt Teidi, I recall queuing nearby for a cable car & then walked up to the very summit with my 6 year old. Well, I walked, he kinda bounced up .. just the way he was.
Thanks Justin! I've always loved Mount Teide. A pretty little song with an epic ending. You should really check out the live version, it's even better. Cheers!
Es un Himno maravilloso Lo tiene todo
Just Got back from a Summer Break. Wot did I miss? This? I'm Listenin now. I hear Jon's Animation LP bristling with early 80s prog. This and that are truly beautiful JP. Never let em tell they it suck. It's the height of Summer. It's Gorgeous here and so is this. Blessings. Diolch.
You can definitely hear traces of QE II album here.
This is an example of peak mid-career Oldfield. Relatively short songs expounding simpler musical themes, yet beautifully put together and composed. (And of course his lovely signature guitar tone.) The album QE2 is full of these. I prefer the longer prog epics, but this is great stuff. I've always been conflicted by the pop songs: others do it much better.
I think Mt. Teidi is famous for the GREGOR solar telescope
wonderfull!!!.........pure mike!!
4:23 Or: the SUN as it emerges and shines up above the mount top
Since I first heard the album in 1982, the atmosphere of this song always gives me a feeling of wanderlust. In my mind's eye there is always an evening atmosphere under palm trees, with golden light and warm air. I do not know why this is so

Has Justin reacted to just Mike Oldfield today, or is there a follow up song. I can't seem to find anything else. Thanks!
"Five Miles Out" the final track was released as a single and has a video to go with it which might be worth reacting to as well. I have every faith that someday you will come to "get" "Taurus 2" as well.

I certainly have every faith that JustJP will enjoy Taurus 3 on first listen... (a very different track from Taurus 2, mind)
One of my all time favourites. Always listen with eyes shut and soar with the music
Hi Justin, has any one already suggested you to listen at the albums of Pierre Moerlen's Gong? You can start from 1976's "Gazeuse!" (or "Expresso", depending on the release), but my favourites are 1979's "Time Is The Key" and "Downwind". In the latter there is also a very good collaboration with Mike Oldfield
So . Und nun die BSeite in einem Stück.😊
I must have missed this when it was posted. Not that I minded song-wise, same ol' same ol', haha. I have been up Mt Teide though. An amazing spot, fantastic views, on a beautiful island. Though why MO altered the spelling... no idea.
I didn't know about the track Mount Teidi until I saw your video. It sounds great! PD: Also, will you do Amarok someday? That album is a gorgeous mess, and in a good way, though it lasts like 1 hour, but I definitely recommend it.
The live version with Simon Philips on drums is also amazing. And us curious but on the record is called "teidi" when the real name of the mount is "teide". A mistake maybe?

One of many mistakes on his records. On one they miss an “L” when writing “Oldfield”😂, on another, a “live” track is labeled “Life”😂
Yet another great track from Mike, like you say JP, a lot said in 4 minutes, which for some of Mike's music it's barely an intro, great percussion in this, he has Simon Phillips on the Crises album. This is great live too.
Do tubular bells 2 live in edinburgh.

Being a newbie to your channel, i looked back to see if you had reacted to any Queen albums. I see that you did indeed review the excellent "Sheer Heart Attack". I got the impression that you enjoyed it immensely. My obvious question is do you have any plans to delve further into their 70s canon? You really can't go wrong with the first six albums. Here's hoping that you do indeed have something lined up. Thanks! 👍

Thanks Owl! I have Queen on my list to return to, but it may be just a little.
The live version is better ( as possible ) with lovely audience and smooth guitar solo ❤
Just a little curiosity: the background rhythmic synth chords imitate the singing of a birds that lives in Tenerife, and that makes this peculiar rhytmic verse...
I rarely prefer Mike Oldfield live compared to albums versions, but Mount Teidi is an exception. I find the live version of this track astounding (with Simon Philips on drums) : kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5WdxbmbdqzXZZc.html

Nice track off this album. Still not absolute essential Oldfield for me, and mostly rehashing sounds and phrasings we've heard on 'QE2', but pleasant track.

Mike does very well with songs relating to mountains as Mount Teidi and Mont St. Michel have grown to become two of my favorite tracks I highly recommend two versions of Mount Teidi that are on youtube. There is a live version from Viareggio with Simon Phillips on drums from 1984 and a solo piano version by Augustin Munoz. Both are excellent and worth watching. If you aren't familiar with Mont St. Michel, you should be.
I’ve never known the correct pronunciation either.
