Thanks for sharing your snare tip . I've been playing hand drums for years, then I was listening to all this nujazz / break beat along with the older jazz drummers as well as mechanical drums. jungle, and got back to my drum set. I'm teaching myself to play electronic sounds on the acoustic drums. I found that I have to really listen and use things I make out of metal and bells different surfaces to find the sound I need. Your tip came at the perfect time. ..thanks. E.E.
Hey Mike, thanks for the tip, because it's one of the better tips that I have found here in KZread land. I'm also a Martial Artist and I loved the comment on the Bruce Lee 1" punch technique, very valid and made plenty of sense. God Bless, stay loose and happy drumming. :)
Once Mike emphasized feeling, I noticed his Boston shirt and kept hearing “More Than a Feeling!”
You're the best Mike.
Excelente Mike, gracias!
I will literally take any lesson from MM. Dude is IMMACULATE
Wow that hair is beautiful
Mike of Rivendell
I knew it! Mike was incorporating Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kun Do and made it into Drum-Kun-Do

I like mikes attitude, i couldn't even tell you what band he was in but my brother who does know told me about him so I watch some of his videos from time to time and I saw him on Time Warp, I bought a pair of his sticks and man if you want to have sticks that can take a beating and not even chip or turn into saw dust get them because I have had mine for a few months and they are barely marked and I play fast hard punk music so I don't hold back, the one thing you have to get used to is the weight because they are HEAVY!!!!!! and that's not over stating either. They run about $10 but they are worth it especially if you play hard and are chopping through your sticks oh yeah also the will make your drums sound even more solid and add some boom to your toms without even trying.
More... more...!
and remember to put your heels up and move from left to right!! he's so fab
I completely agree.
his all in posing and acting
hmmm he has wristbumps too... awesome
gokhan selamet lol wot? A good performer of any art or science does not always make a great teacher, but please consider that Mike has taught at Berklee for quite a while, which is not something you would be asked to do if you were not an excellent teacher.
@Michael Scott You can't argue with results. And while the while gear thing is true this is just another philosophy, one that did not start with Mike, but more so with mister Tony Williams. He felt relying on rebound was something not technically correct. Both method are fair, just different approaches.
good actor...
Gotta love that Boston shirt & the Bastahn accent.
I liked that one tip.
MM : Just like Bruce Lee punch !
He looks like Poca freakin´hontas!!!!
Arj Barker on drums! But seriously, this guy is friggin awesome.

Second video tip I watched from Mike. It keeps leaving me confused. Perhaps is too short? Also, why isn't he using rebound at all?
@ripplecutbuddha
5 жыл бұрын
It's a drill to help break you away from rebound because there are times you don't want to need it, or when rebound will wreck your approach to the next hits you have to make.
Is that real hair?
"Pick the stick back up where it started."...(doesn't take it back where it started)
He looks kinda like Rob Trujilo
MOAH
bruce lee punch!
Moooar... and 10 points to Slytherin
Looks like free stroke.
god
Mike mangina
So he doesn't subscribe to the free stroke technique
Not sure what the point of this is. Do you think the audience cares or can even see if your stick comes up to a similar height that is started at?
Mike is one of the superdrummers that will be everknown in dummer circles but I think most of us hate that he irons his hair lol
It's not laziness, it's to suck as much money out of the youtube system as possible.
And this is how you drill all feeling out of your drumming.
Injun
It's not my fav musical genre, not my drum setup (I'm for waaaay smaller drumsets and single kick), not my grip (I'm a traditional), not a lot of things, but I have nothing but deep respect for this guy. Same for Thomas Lang. Why? Because it's so clear to me they are really terrific drummers and musicians even though they are so far away from my points of view.

That's what happens when you don't cut your hair. We call it ... "long hair."
Generally I like this channel. But seriously, there has to have been 20-30 30 second videos posted in the last 2 days. Drowns out my entire feed with BS for hits/clicks. Yeah we know why they do it. But it just finally made me unsubscribe. Guess I'll just check back for what I like, if I can remember. Maybe their other subscribers like this BS. Judging by the number of comments...I don't think I'm alone.
Get yer hair cut Mike, it don't suit ya,,

+Zodiack Wada Speaking of "time," you have none. Mangini probably has a video for you about practicing to a metronome somewhere...
Extremely wrong exercise. I like Mangini. But it does not mean that being a good drummer means being a good drum teacher or drum technic instructor. Just like in soccer. If it was so, Maradona would be the best football manager. Honestly don't use and work out this technic.
@g.selamet

It is sure that, Mangini is one of the fastest drummer since he has world record. But it does not mean that the technique he is using, is suitable for others.

It doesn't take much to say another person is wrong. To avoid justified your claims takes even less. The reality is that this is a great exercise. Have control over small motions allows large motions to flow much easier.

Well He was teaching at Berklee so he can't be that bad. I think this isn't a bad exercise.

Joshua Strong This is not a bad exercise. It's not an exercise for me, however. I plan on going into a field where recordings are going for a more... organic feel. Plus, I hate the preciseness of his technique: why only make one "gear" do your work when you can have five gears? I use Moeller. It's very easy and simple how I use it too: most everything is tapped, unless an accent is desired, in which case, the whip motion is used, and the amount of "whip" will determine the desired volume. A great quote was said once... "If you want chops, you must exercise. If you want to play music, you must practice." I feel like this is more "chops" than it is "practice."

Michael Scott u need fluent and precise chops to be considered a decent drummer, to play these chops well u need rudiments, to play rudiments nice and consistent you need good hand technique and stick control. I wouldn't do this exercise either, but another way to get this kinda control is to play 'quietly' at slow and fast tempos, with stick tips close to the head and cymbals for long periods. Playing consistently and accurately at low volume is hard, and therefore you become a very solid player at normal volumes.
