@@creativeamerican8811 lol well said. I’m British too man, Welsh actually. I’m not sure but I always thought Kipling was American. But after the maker of exceedingly good cakes I probably got that wrong. Gunga Din is about a Sherpa who helped the British troops abroad, who could endure more than the hardened soldiers campaigning. He led them and helped them but had no military training, but he did the ugly bits they couldn’t. That’s really simplistic but it’s kind of the gist. ‘If’ is my favourite poem. It makes me tear up when I hear it; it’s unbelievable. But in this crazy modern world where we get told lies about how we should behave; hearing about this long gone era where apparently we were all bigots and cavemen, this poem signifies that even back then a man could admire, respect, rely and even love each other, regardless of where we hail from. Just my humble analysis, but it’s still a beautiful poem.

The empire was gone, and the world had passed on. The colonies became independent, Europe became a community - and in 1953 the Hungarians came to Wembley to wallop the founders of football 6-3. And did we learn? Did we fuck. We stayed on our island, growling behind our nukes with our thuggish dirty streets, our polluted beaches, our hospitals where the rain comes through the roof, and our schools that can't afford to buy books - we stayed on our island with our fading industries, and our 4-4-fucking-2.

If your mental state isn't jangled these days then I'm afraid you have no soul.
quite incredible that a comedy movie (it is so much more than that obviously) happens to produce the best performance of If ever. Come on England for Saturday!
I think this scene represents the importance of 'IF' and Mike Bassetts character development in the film. All of what he quoted had happened to him, and yet his character perseveres. It hilarious to watch what happens to him during the film, but this scene shows the emotional reality of it all.
This scene turned a knockabout comedy into a masterpiece in my opinion.
I remember watching this for the first time and thinking "He's going to say 'mason'!"

Brilliant film watch it
What the modern game is missing, PASSION 😢
Harry Maguire's father got two broken ribs in the Wembley stampede ... before the manager made two cold subs and a child take the penalties... Mike Bassett is God.
A genuinely hilarious movie on the whole. However, this scene, was fucking deeper than the Atlantic. Very moving.
Rudyard Kipling, briliant.
It’s coming home.come on England

Just saw this on channel 5, brilliant film even today.
Fill up every time I watch this.

Absolute class
IT'S FUCKING COMING HOME AND I'M GONNA CRY TEARS OF JOY
One most moving bit of tv ive seen ricky was class in this and this scene is world class
For a comedy ("I've had to make one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make in my life - uhm, I've decided to carry on as the England manger" is hilarious) this scene is up there for dramatic delivery and signalling a turning point. If you have a leader, under adversity, with the media throwing stones at him come out and make a speech like this you'd run through walls for him.
Best British comedy by far for years come on england
Magnificent
Incredible
Why didn't Roy Hodgson give this speach? Also, maybe we should have insisted in playing 4-4- *******- 2

BASSETT FOR ENGLAND - we get to the semis!!!!!!!!!! best delivery of this poem ever
I remember when this movie came out it was just a cash grab capitalising on England for once looking like a team that was actually going to win the World Cup (for real 😂 it had been a minute before we had a great team) but this is genuinely a great football movie. And this scene was fantastic. I get goosebumps every time I watch it.
One of the coldest scenes in movie history 🥶🥶
So great
love Mike Bassett
My motivation speech

The empire was gone, and the world had passed on. The colonies became independent, Europe became a community - and in 1953 the Hungarians came to Wembley to wallop the founders of football 6-3. And did we learn? Did we fuck. We stayed on our island, growling behind our nukes with our thuggish dirty streets, our polluted beaches, our hospitals where the rain comes through the roof, and our schools that can't afford to buy books - we stayed on our island with our fading industries, and our 4-4-fucking-2.

I can just imagine Roy Hodgson doing this but saying "England will be playing Raheem FUCKING sterling" lol. Roy Hodgson reminds me of mike Bassett.
Yessss...English through and through
What a first class actor Ricky is
brilliant.
This film is so funny. But this scene is so touching. As we see how over pressured the poor bloke is. And it’s the same in reality when we do this to our managers they have no room to breath. But on the plus side them Mexicans were bloody brilliant.

So true, very relatable. The movie is brilliant and a lot of what happens feels very much like a documentary rather than fiction. Thanks for the comment 👍
Best cinema's scene , by far.
Roy Hodgson could do with memorizing 'If.'
Still glorious.
"Do you like Kipling?" "I don't know, you naughty boy, I've never kippled."
