Just come out with a whole album of ES covers. This and Twilight are just too good. Some of the best ES covers out there.

Mikaela balanced faithfulness of the original with her own flourishes and changes. Quite impressive. She added some leading tones between bass notes which almost makes me wonder why Elliott didn’t do this with his original, but then again this was an early song. Now I can’t listen to this song without imagining those leading notes! Subtle thing but it shows she has a mind for composition.

Christopher Reale have you checked out an album titled ‘Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith?’ I’m of the opinion, that the greatest, or at least most transparently honest, heartfelt & emotionally evocative covers of anything from Elliott’s discography undoubtedly is a tossup between the whole album by Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield, the two E.S. covers I’ve heard Mikaela Davis record, the cover of “Independence Day” which the band Truest actually made an accompanying Music Video for which can be found on KZread, Mary-Lou Lord’s version of his discarded B-Side gem: “I Figured You Out”, and/or the entire album “Home To Oblivion” (which is comprised solely of beautifully moving instrumental arrangements [solo piano specifically] highlighting some of the more piano-friendly Elliott Smith original works, and expertly played by a virtuoso pianist named Christopher O’Reilly. In my humble opinion, the aforementioned selections are head and shoulders better than at least 99% of the tracks we got on “To Elliott, From Portland” the compilation tribute album performed by various artists in the booming Portland indie rock scene, and I believe was recorded & released in a rather timely fashion (maybe a few years tops after ES passed away?) in response to his tragic and untimely passing in 2003, however I could be mistaken on that...

I named my child after Elliott. To say that I am a fan is a tragic understatement. I have avoided many ES covers because I feel like no one could ever do justice to the original. I was wrong. Please do Between the Bars or Clementine or This Disaster, even the original Miss Misery, or almost anything.
