Miguzi Retrospective: Attack the Block (Episode 8)

Фильм және анимация

This is Attack the Block, the series all about animation-centric programming blocks. Today’s episode focuses on Miguzi, a weekday afternoon block that aired on Cartoon Network in the heart of the 2000s. At its surface, it looks simple enough- a casual kid host, with a great lineup of shows just after school. But the block was caught in the heart of a shifting network.
Huh, you made it down here to the description. I hope this means you found the video full of awesomeness, and are planning on subscribing. Either way, thanks for watching!

This is a great episode. I'd remember watching the "Miguzi" block in the fall of 2004 (I was in the 4th grade at the time). And their first lineup was kind of one of it's kind. I remember watching "Totally Spies" on the block around it's 5:00 pm time slot, and that's the best part about "Miguzi". I was surprised that "Totally Spies" was moved to 5:30 pm while "Winx Club" took it's spot. And as for "Winx Club", ugh, lord, help me. Out of all the 4KidsTV animated series, "Winx Club" is the one for girls that I can not stand. And I'm not sure if you are "Winx Club" haters, but I respect for pain and decision.

Childhood memories watching the block around 2004-2007. If you didn't know, Erin (the kid host) was voiced by my favorite voice actress, Jessica DiCicco. Ironically, 1 year later, she began her voice acting debut in the Disney Channel series, The Buzz on Maggie, as the voice of the title character. Today, she voices Lynn Loud (for retrospective) and Lucy Loud in The Loud House, Annie Bramley in It's Pony, and Candice in Close Enough. The block aired shows, that aired on the channel, a few from it's then-sister block, Toonami (including Zatch Bell, One Piece (4Kids dub, before Funimation today since 2007), and Naruto), programming from Kids' WB! (like Static Shock), FoxBox (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003 TV series), and Winx Club), which later became 4Kids TV in 2005. Airing shows produced by Warner Bros. Animation and former film and TV studio, 4Kids Entertainment, which eventually, Winx Club, and it's production company, Rainbow s.r.l. got acquired by Viacom (now ViacomCBS, the company that owns Nickelodeon), and became co-owned by the company in 2011. And yes (obviously), she does sound very similar to Candice from Close Enough, Gwen Wu in The Mighty B!, and the title character in Hanazuki: Full of Treasures, all other characters voiced by her, as I know voice acting in animation, movies, video games, and commercials (interstitials).

I definitely remember watching CN pretty much every day and seeing this block come on after school. Code Lyoko always stood out in particular and it kinda stuck with me because of that. And...oh boy, Team Galaxy. I very vaguely remember seeing a few episodes like it was a fever dream, no wonder it felt so short since it only lasted a week.

Well, Team Galaxy actually debuted in August 2006 as part of Cartoon Network's Saturday morning lineup, which was *sort of* like Miguzi, as it had shows like Fantastic Four, Xiaolin Showdown, and Ben 10 (and even featured it in the coveted 7pm spot on Cartoon Cartoons one week in September, I recall), but by January 2007, the network was pretty much having buyer's remorse and effectively pulled it from the regular schedule and made it an exclusively "On Demand" cartoon until 2009. I mean, the show did have 52 episodes and was pushed more prominently in Canada and especially Europe, but it was never going to get anywhere near the heights Totally Spies did. And, yes, that's one of the characters in my avatar.

Miguzi wasn’t a bad block it was actually good. The reason it gets a bad rep is because it replaced toonami on weekdays. Many toonami fans still hold a grudge against miguzi and attribute this to why they think CN “died” in 2004 ( well really their have been 50 times when CN “died”

I remember how *ticked* Toonami fans were when Miguzi was given the primary afternoon/early evening block. I saw Miguzi infrequently (as my family did not have cable, so I only got a few glimpses or days of it when visiting my grandparents or friends of the family), but I did enjoy much of it. Totally Spies, Code Lyoko, Teen Titans, and 2003 TMNT were excellent shows, and Static Shock was as awesome as it had been on KidsWB. It was far less important/impactful to me however than say KidsWB, Toonami, Toon Disney, and Fox Kids.

I personally didn't even know Miguzi had existed until 2005, I think at the time I was more into Nickelodeon than Cartoon Network in the afternoons (except for watching DBZ and Hamtaro on Toonami and Samurai Deeper Kyo and Gokusen on EWAM). Miguzi was...neat. I remember hating it at first because of it replacing Toonami but it grew on me over time, especially since it had Yugioh GX and Code Lyoko. I honestly don't even remember it actually ending. It was like one moment it was there and the next it was gone, which is kind of weird since I would've been like 13 at that point. Anyway, awesome video!

I remember this era of Cartoon Network being great with meguzee but one of the things I remember was the oversaturation of Naruto that led to me believing that the over-saturation of Naruto is what killed Cartoon Network's greatness and it ain't come back until Regular Show and Adventure Time

  • @DxBlack

    @DxBlack

    4 жыл бұрын

Naruto had a typical saturation on the network until well after they killed CN Real and started over saturation of Ben 10, Totally Drama Island (garbage), and re-runs of Samurai Jack as the decline into the late 2000's (around 2007-2008). It kept that same typical level of saturation until it was pushed into the dying Toonami block with those same shows (and the fact that they even dared to include B10 in that block shows they had lost sight of what made Toonami _Toonami,_ just before they killed that block and shoved it into [Adult Swim]).

For you younger guys, Miguzi was a great program. Replacing Toonami wasn’t probably cartoon networks greatest idea, If anything Cartoon Network should have put Toonami on during the evening hours like seven through nine o’clock at night. And follow it up with adult swim. I think if Cartoon Network would’ve done this Miguzi may have survived and toonami. But, Bad management really screwed everything up for everybody, Miguzi was replacing Toonami in a abrupt manner. If Cartoon Network would’ve gave people a heads up about what their schedule is going to be like maybe then we wouldn’t have such a grudge against Miguzi, But for you younger guys, Miguzi was a good program for y’all

16:02 Team Galaxy being a one-week wonder remains one of the more baffling entries in CN history when you look back, but... I think I can explain this one. The show had a bit of a "soft launch" with some adverts throughout the late summer, coinciding with the show's actual debut in other regions, and at one point, it even appeared on a weeknight in September. However, it was often resigned to Saturday mornings, and in December 2006, it showed episodes at 8:30am. I think it having a bit of a negative stigma with it being "Totally Spies in Space" at the time, not to mention it's damn near confusing rights ownership (Cartoon Network ponied up some serious dough to make episodes as well as have the rights in the States thanks to the success of Totally Spies, but it was made primarily for Jetix Europe, which was the remnants of Fox Kids, now a Disney property, and also aired on YTV in Canada, which still serves as Nickelodeon Canada) meant CN wasn't that interested in its success since it meant it would mean they would have to share it with some conflicting partners. They still kept it until 2009, but you had to watch it on demand. When you don't own the property, instead just syndicate it, success and failure are somewhat irrelevant given that it's not your responsibility to encourage folks to get everyone on board. If they do, it's gravy, and if they don't, it was just another bad business decision and you try again. It's an alright show (and my avatar is one of the characters, Brett), but the fact it was the final Miguzi newcomer makes it an interesting trivia question.

@15:06 - Uhm, you do realize Tom was not the original host of Toonami, right? Ever heard of an old Hanna-Barbera action cartoon from the 1960's called Space Ghost? Yes it was also made into an adult cartoon in the 90's, Space Ghost Coast to Coast (and is much more remembered for that nowadays than the original cartoon) but 30 years prior to that it was a run of the mill harmless action cartoon about a space fighting superhero. One of the baddies in it, Moltar (who also works as part of Space Ghost's crew in Coast to Coast hilariously enough) hosted Toonami for like a year lol

Next you should do Bohbot Kids Network. That was a largely forgotten kid's programming block but everybody remembers the shows aired on the block: Street Sharks, Double Dragon, Mighty Max, Syndi Sonic (short for The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The term Syndi Sonic came from the 2017 documentary The Rise and Fall of DiC Entertainment. Watch and you'll understand why), Sonic Underground, Extreme Ghostbusters, Roughnecks aka Starship Troopers The Animated Series, etc. But nobody remembers the block a lot of those cartoons were on (I think I might be the only person on the planet who remembers BKN. The line up tried competing with Fox Kids and Nickelodeon for god sakes. Usually most people my age (#Proud90sKid Born in '88) watched one or the other and considering I grew up with rural cable (which wouldn't have Nickelodeon until years later), it was Fox Kids for a lot of the neighbourhood kids who either didn't have cable or if they did were stuck with rural cable like my family was. But I digress, the block had some awesome gems and even some laughably horrendous guilty pleasures. Anyway, the programming block was called The Bohbot Kids Network or BKN for short. I hope you'll do a video of that one in the future and thanks in advance

I think that's why a lot of us refused to watch it. That and it was getting to the point where being an edgelord "cartoons sucks now" 90's kid who fapped to nostalgia before it became a mainstream fad was starting to become more and more of a hype. With that said, hilarious how that would years later slowly but surely segue into the 2nd wave Nostalgia Market (1st wave was ironically enough in the mid 80's to early 90's. You had lots of Depression through Boomer Generation entertainment making a comeback and even movies and shows that capitalized on that Nostalgia Market fad. 2nd Wave Nostalgia Market is like that one only now with lots of 80's and 90's shit coming back instead lol). But yeah, those were the two reasons I refused to watch Miguzi as I think it was for a lot of us
