Might Have To Give Up On GhostBSD, Plus Some New Equipment

I apologize about the audio quality of this video. I spent much of the day trying to get this mic to work in GhostBSD--playing with the gain and settings. Then, I booted back into Manjaro to make this video but I did not set all of my settings back to how they were prior to me playing around in GhostBSD.

I was waiting for that video to go out, that is a wakeup call. I am the founder of GhostBSD so yeah there is a need for improvement. I do like the video because I had no idea if it would had worked out of the box for you and now I know, so thanks for that. Automounting is working in GhostBSD MATE for XFCE I would not be able to comment on that because I work on maintaining MATE. I had never dealt with a USB mic but I have one on my webcam I should just try to have it working and get that for the next release. the next which will fix some problem you had. Anyway, thanks for having given it a try.

Years ago, I did mention peripheral connection issues to Eric. Who wants to fight to connect devices? Life is too short for that. I did mention in GhostBSD's forum that connecting devices should be a cinch to use. His forum was more concerned about keeping the footprint of the OS compact rather than making it useable and intuitive. In the long run the code base increased massively. They went from bad to worse using TrueOS codebase. Only they can make it work, if they can make it work robustly. TrueOS was already a rollercoaster experience. With MS Windows, it is plug and play. Most Linux and Unix desktop OS won't even automount and manage the files of a cellphone. They are seriously behind the times. Even after work, the developers of these kernels doesn't want to be aggravated by the operating system. That's why Linus Torvalds have an Apple computer. Most people want something that simply just works.

Complaints on the GhostBSD forums should be a wake-up call.
Dude, you went through the pain so we don't have to. Your heroic efforts are much appreciated! I just finished a Debian Stable (non-free iso) install on my "new" Lenovo T420s that got here yesterday from eBay. A couple of blips, but xfce4 and i3 are now humming along. There were only two "issues." I had to spend some time deleting a bunch of language support I didn't want. And the backlight keys did not work out of the box, requiring an xorg backlight config file. Otherwise the config files from my primary laptop took care of everything else. Again, thanks for trying. Now get some sleep and then chill with an adult beverage at the appropriate time.
It sounds like GhostBSD is so frustrating that it will make a bald man pull his hair out. :-P

It reminds me of old windows days :P so many drivers to install after re-installation. It was one of the reasons I came to linux, believe it or not
The BSD experience sounds like a nightmare. Never tried BSB. Won't be trying BSD! I think living in Windows for a month is no bad thing for a prolific Linux disto reviewer such as yourself Derek. It's always useful to experience what 90%+ of the population are using - keeps you grounded :) At least all of your peripherals will work and you should't experience any hardware issues. Before switching to Linux a year ago (after decades on mac OS) I spent about 3 months running W10. It was fine TBH, pain free and stuff worked. It was the privacy/spyware issues that made me jump off. At least you've had some shinny new tech toys to take away the BSD pain :)
FreeBSD and sun solaris never installed for me, You can shine some Open Solaris on us if you feel up to it.
Ive used the "user friendly" bsd distros and god they are a pain in the ass! Some of them dont even run on modern hadware at all ive only had luck getting them to work on old thinkpads like t60 and t400 and there was still driver problems and i was in shock to because everything runs so well on older thinkpads. good video glad to see you back !

just a question to. does yeti mics work right out of the mics with linux?
Sounds like GhostBSD is a real winner. I was just about to try it out. Thank you for helping me dodge a bullet.
I installed DragonFlyBSD a few months ago with Xfce. It runs okay as a very basic OS, though many here would probably like to install and use BASH. Firefox ran okay, but I think it had warnings that it was out of date. I couldn't figure out how to get either Chrome or Chromium on it. The current version of PC-BSD called TrueOS might be worth a look. I think it has more developers behind it while GhostBSD seems like it's created and maintained by one person.
interesting that the Elgato works in Linux, I did not expect it to work. Does it need any custom drivers or does it work with default kernel drivers? Have you tried it in Ubuntu based distros that don't contain all the latest drivers like Arch-based distros?

Only tried it with Manjaro so far. And like you, I half-expected it not to work but I said to myself if it doesn't work I'll send it back. But it worked. Also, I'm not on the latest kernel in Manjaro. I always run the LTS kernels.

Hey DT, back in December ‘19 I tried TrueOS which GhostBSD happens to be based on. I had exactly the same problem with mounting storage devices and HAL. I tried installing many different linux kernel (compatibility layer) and file system compatibility tools only to just fail again. Plus, I had problems with OpenRC failing to enable booting (-session) dbus (set in rc.conf). So I managed edit rc services manually. I should add I was in KDE but it’s not important cause it’s a “TrueBSD” or maybe “FreeBSD 13 CURRENT” problem. I tried for 5-6 days only to go back to FreeBSD 12.1 where it worked like a charm.
Hey DT: Please put info of where you purchased that 6-drive SSD device you just got. Looks interesting! BB
That sucks DT, so much effort just to get the basics. Another thought for your cam link. If your laptop has a HDMI out you might be able to hop with that and stream the output to your main production machine. BTW I voted for Siduction so that could be interesting to see. Keep up the great work.

I did think about. I also thought about recording my audio through the laptop and then merging the audio/video in Kdenlive later. But that's too much damn work. :D
Also for ntfs i believe there is a package for that (almost all linux distros have it by default) and sounds like kernel problems. I wouldnt know how but u probably have to mess with the kernel

If you want to try weird OS'es, what about OpenIndiana? Would it be better than Ghost BSD?
Wow, I've thought it would be easy to manage GhostBSD! Would you try again? Their forums are very empty - a total vacuum. I've made some question, it was never replied. The only BSD that have worked so far so good is macOS.

DT you can download and use the Windows 10 iso from Microsoft without buying a product key to activate it. There are some minor limitations that way like not being able to change the theming but the functionality is still there.
Have you tried freebsd since then?
Not sure if you've tried this, but to mount ntfs drives you need to install the ntfs-3g driver (as on most linux distros). Doesn't solve your recording problem though.

Tried it myself, installation showed successful but would not boot. Changed installation disk to different USB port and it worked fine, this fix found by accident rather than any logic. Find download speeds pretty slow.
Haiku is next?
I'm curious as to the issues related to mounting external drives. Was it because of the filesystem? BSD lacks support for ext3 and newer, so that's always a challenge and not clearly stated for new users, the same with NTFS, which requires some work to get working. In my experience, between OSes, FAT is the only true safe choice unfortunately. If it was hardware related, that would be a big shame.
Geez! what a shame! so much effort for little gain, at least you tried everything possible, good luck with your next choice mate!

The pounding of the keyboard? kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYajvNGGZa_ag8o.html
Edit: I take back what I said about BSD's previously. After giving NomadBSD a second chance, it automatically detected my wi-fi adapter, so I installed it on my secondary desktop (which I use mostly to play and create videos). After installing, NomadBSD detected my Nvidia card, my Snowball microphone and my webcam. Sound was also not an issue this time. I was able to create a video in Obs Studio. Zoom appears to work as well (I'll know for sure when I have my weekly conference call on Thursday). So, I'm happy with NomadBSD.
I've been wrestling with BSD's on and off over the last couple of weeks. TrueOS worked beautifully, but I was told "the Desktop version is dead". I tried GhostBSD - it looks nice, but Firefox crashed repeatedly, Palemoon was OK but online fonts looked appalling. The browser crashing killed it for me. No Vivaldi, no Chromium, no recent Opera. FreeBSD was OK following a guide, but I couldn't get the nvidia drivers working so screen tearing was so bad the machine was unusable. My experience with BSD began two or so weeks ago (16+ years of Linux use so not new to command lines, config files, etc). If I had a second pc, I'd have FreeBSD on it and build it all from scratch using portmaster, but I only have 1 at the moment so it's back to Linux.
Hey DistroTube, first of all thx you very much for your videos! Could i ask you plz make video how to work with Slackware, i mean after installation processes.

Perhaps the name ‘Ghost ... BSD’ should be a clue...
I have used GhostBSD in virtualbox and found it more problematic that TrueOS/Mate. I installed Chrome and it failed to run properly after the install. Even TrueOS will need some modification after the install but many of the application from the AppCafe work. However you are likely the first to try your particular set of applications. Apparently there are only 3 people working the non-server part of TrueOS and they will soon lost funding from IXsystems
I'm having the same problem with GhostBSD XFCE, also FreeBSD & OpenBSD. They just refuse to recognise the USB ports, so I can't transfer anything to the computer from a USB thumbdrive, an SD card from the camera or my WD Elements 2TB external hard drive. Without being able to use those devices BSD is completely useless to me as a daily driver, so I'll either continue using Debian 9 as my daily driver or install GhostBSD in a VM.
We missed you DT! Respect for giving it a go with bsd.. so siduction or arco?

I can't in good conscience ever say windows xD
I have been distrohoping like 15+ times the last 2 months on my main computer (not virtual box). Because I wanted to try everything big for example Ubuntu(And alot of flavours), Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, KDE neon, peppermint, linux mint, arch, manjaro, elementary, (something I don't remeber the name of), deepin (was kinda nice but got slow after 2-3 days, also I like minimal de/wm), redcore linux (fucking hate it just because I could not get anything working.) and probably some more distros. But the one I live in now and love is Debian 9 Stretch i3 because I love i3 and the computer is so fast. Boot is like 20sec insted of old 50winblows 10 and shutdown literally 2sec. And opening programs is also fast. Just love i3 and Debian.
Ghost BSD gave me an extremely hard time. I have a hard disk with 4 partitions. I made a 5th partition and tried to install Ghost BSD on the 5th one. The installation failed, and my second partition became unrecognisable. Thought it was a fluke, restored the second partition and tried it again. Again, it failed and took the second partition with it.
I still think you should run Debian Sid... :)

My votes would be for Achlabs or Peppermint. For something out of your comfort zone I'd say KDE Neon, Ubuntu Mate or Elementary. Anyway, GhostBSD sounds like a treat. Can't wait to try it out. Meh, tried BSD and was it was just not jiving. Then again, back then I was new to that unix/linux thing I don't need to do the windows thing because I still run win 7 on the desktop and do not need the aggravation with forced reboot after updates, partnersupport.microsoft.com/en-us/par_clientsol/forum/par_win/must-stop-windows-10-from-auto-rebooting-for/4cbefcf3-7193-4e51-9ed8-45ebbe517b63?auth=1 Anyway, I am back running Arch on my laptop and working on configuring i3. It's a slow process and takes time coming from XFCE, but I am learning. I was using Archlabs before until the revisions this year. What made Archlabs convenient was the quick install. Though, I guess ager reinstalling Arch 20+ times one becomes proficient. There should be a special t-shirt for doing vanilla Arch installs.

GhostBSD sounds like my marriage. I put my heart and soul into it. I wanted to make it work. Unlike BSD and Linux, my marriage operating system and my physical hardware were all soldered together in such a permanent way as the components could not be upgraded. I never once got the cooking function to launch. The v*gina function required a 3rd-party application that did not work. B*tch-mode was not disable-able and would cause the system to crash. Sleep-mode required me to move to another room. It has a feature like Alexa that would talk to you. Volune was way too loud and sounded muffled.
I remember ghostBSD would freeze in the installer. Never managed to install it at all. Funny, because freeBSD works fine.
GhostBSD isn't a "distro" btw in case people were wondering, more of a "spin" 😛 Ironic BT, from research GhostBSD is also the one I wanted to play with to see if it could be a usable daily driver. Don't like the look of TrueOS, at all. I mainly want to give ZFS a proper go. Thinking of putting Xfce onto DragonFly BSD on a spare laptop to play with HAMMER2 and experience the unique SMP handling too. Would you recommend OpenIndiana over Ghost? Also, another experiment I want to do is creating a BSD build from scratch including compiling from ports ;-) forums.freebsd.org/threads/beginners-guide-how-to-set-up-a-freebsd-desktop-from-scratch.61659/

Hey DT, I know this a little late, but your bad experience with GhostBSD is that's it's trying to be Linux when its FreeBSD. You can't approach FreeBSD like its a Linux system, you have to do things the "FreeBSD" way. If you would have went for regular FreeBSD iso and went through the handbook, plus using the FreeBSD forums, you probably would have had more success with the system. Anyways wish I was around back then to help you.
BSD like Arch. You have to be a fan.

Arch is super-user-friendly compared to BSD.
Bruh: GhostBSD is as an easy install as Arch. The net issue is one of security that belies most BSD systems. Did you consider your /etc/resolv.conf? Often BSD would comment (#) out your DNS svr addresses.
You really shouldn't hold the DSL camera by the lens with it attached to the body of the camera, always hold the camera by the body itself.

BSD people says that it is impossible to partition a disk. One can only slice a disk. BSD people says that Linux people cannot partition their slices. Of course BSD people partition each of their slices. They used slice a for the root partition, the b slice for the swap partition, they call the full slice the c partition. And they sometimes uses other partitions for home, var, etc that they label d,e,f,g or h. Sadly because Linux people don't know how to partition slices, they waste the 4 slices of their disks, and even need to reserve one of the slices for adding logical slices.
Use Slackware!

"Never say never. Never give up so easily." - And write your-own drivers and fixes. Sad but this is probably still sometimes true for BSD systems. Is there is some community networking/infrastructure program to share/test/accept drivers, since BSDs have somewhat different kernels? Since it is tedious and too slow to do that manually. I don't imagine how people can cover a range of consumer-grade IoS hardware, otherwise.

DistroTube Installing base FreeBSD, adding a desktop environment, getting wifi/wifi applet to work, etc. has taught me a lot. I'm still working on getting Conky configured, but it's the journey - not the destination. If anyone can make it work, I have confidence that you can, Derek.
Hello DT! Before you give up on GhostBSD please do take contact with RoboNuggie: kzread.info/dron/xwcmRAmBRzZMNS37dCgmHA.html And also with Backyard Tech: kzread.info To mount a drive on FreeBSD: www.cyberciti.biz/faq/mounting-harddisks-in-freebsd-with-mount-command/ For your network: github.com/GhostBSD/networkmgr#networkmgr To install simplescreenrecorder: www.freshports.org/multimedia/simplescreenrecorder/ If you choose something else then Calculate Linux with the flavour of your choice. I can help you a lot on Calculate should you have any issue you couldn't solve by yourself! Cheers.

@DT RoboNuggie just did a video for your issues:kzread.info/dash/bejne/epiFrZmJlbnaYtqn.htmlheers.
My advise: drop bsd. It’s a great server system but as a desktop, it’s a pain

Going to give a couple more days. See if I can fix the issues.
Just saying with windows 10 u dont have to buy it. There is a iso on their website if u look up windows 10 iso on google. With this version u cant change wallpaper and have a watermark on bottom right part of screen. You should talk to bryan lunduke as he is doing windows 10 for 30 days as well. Btw if u dont wanna go through with the challenge anymore i wont blame u

Oh I'm doing something for 30 days! Not sure if it will be GhostBSD though. Gonna give it a couple more days. Windows 10? If people want to see it, I guess I could do it. Lunduke is doing it as well? Maybe I should do something different if he's doing a Windows challenge (I can always do Windows at a later date).

Windows seems to be better than BSD. However, BSD has their own utilities, maybe it's a matter of researching.
For all the Windows 10 fanboys - As a dual booter I can say for a fact there is NOTHING AMAZING about Windows 10! Yes it usually works, especially with games, but the constant updating is a pain in the ass. Defender has to update daily, Windows apps usually update daily to every week, once a month there is a monthly update (takes about an hour) and then every six months there is a major update (that takes about 2 to 6 hours). When one single update has to go through at least 5 different steps to install, then there is a major defect with the operating system... Step 1: Preparing to Downlaod - 0% to 100% Step 2: Downloading - 0% to 100% Step 3: Preparing to Install - 0% to 100% Step 4: Reboot Install - 0% to 30% Step 5: Reboot Install - 30% to 100% P.S. These updates can be postponed, but once a month they are FORCED installed!
Man I feel for you. I had FreeBSD on a separate drive and worked on it for 3 months before I gave up. This isn't for the average user nor the experienced Linux user, this is a beast for coding engineers only. Coding is a nightmare, it's done line by line, need a new driver, hope you have a few hours to make it work, or I should say you better know how to code it in. This is one reason why Apple chose it, it's free and a nightmare to code, sooo! who it their right mine would try and copy it. Use it great, but except it for what it is, and don't complain nor try and fix things that do not work and there are plenty.
For those that keep suggesting Windows 10: It's not funny anymore!
Dude, you gotta removed the little network manager applet. That fuckin thing sucks. Just use the /etc/rc.conf file to setup a static ip.
