I don't see any load on that plane. I don't believe that they take off fully loaded. A catapult launch system is needed to take off fully loaded, and neither the Russians nor the Chinese have it. I hear that the Chinese may be working on the new EMALS (Electro Magnetic Aircraft Launch System) which the US Navy is also developing. The EMALS will be better than the steam catapults (cheaper, safer, more flexible) but right now the US system is TOO POWERFUL, over stressing the aircraft. Refinements are needed, so it is almost two years from operational status. The British will use EMALS on their second new carrier; the first carrier, the Queen Elizabeth, will use the F-35B STOVL (Marine) version of the F-35, which has short takeoff capability designed into the aircraft. The MiGs do not have short takeoff built into them -- a short takeoff version was dropped from production. The EMALS will probably be sold to India for their future carriers, when it is fully developed.

Nick Day - Yes, there is a small missile under the left wing. That's not much of a load. No external fuel tanks or bombs. According to Wikipedia, the MiG-29K is designed to defend the fleet, not to penetrate or attack ground targets. It can't take off with bombs and fuel tanks without a catapult. The more I learn about catapults, they are very big and very expensive. Britain's next carrier, the Queen Elizabeth, would have been too expensive with catapults. By using the F-35B STOVL aircraft, they don't need catapults. The Russians don't have any such STOVL in their inventory or planned. So, Nick, that's a very light weapon load intended for fleet defense only.

It's correct, it's not an opinion, these are facts. Payload suffers for the lack of catapults. I'm Russian, so I'm not being political here, these are just plain facts - no other country comes anywhere close to American aircraft carrier fleet capabilities.

I want to see the full video. The one where the MiG29K prepares to take off, takes off, does a circuit then lands, because that is all it can do with the fuel it has. Notice no weapons and little fuel shows the limitations of these style of carrier operations with the thirsty Russian fighters.

That, is a designed standard takeoff. There is nothing short, or long. Update comments: My view:- if the length of runway required for a take off is to be measured, there should not be any assistance made for the aircraft concerned. The clip shows that the main landing gears of the MiG have stoppers raised up to the second the jets are in full throttle with their afterburners on. When the stoppers dropped, the MiG dashes towards a ski-jump ramp to raise it's angle of attack. If any short or long is to be ascribed to the takeoff, it can only refer to the designed mechanism and not the aircraft. The MiG takeoff cannot be any longer or shorter. Nothing more from me, case closed.
