Welcome to our new content. As the Weapon Detective, we investigate modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about the older weapon systems. In our videos, we tell their epic stories, which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future would be like. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

On 26 April 1974, Flight Lieutenant S. Alvi of the Pakistan Air Force, while flying a SAF MiG-21F-13 (Serial No. 1863) on deputation to No. 67A Squadron, Syrian Air Force (SAF) out of Dumayr Air Base, shot down an Israeli Mirage.

read about that encounter and did a little research. the israelis had the mIg 21 in their possession from 1966, having stolen one from the Iraqi air force, whereas the Pakistanis had never flown one, did fight those though during the 1971 war, having actually shot a Mig 21 with their subsonic F86. when the Pakistanis reached the ME war theater during 1973, there was a ceasefire in place already. so they only settled for patrolling missions. from when they started learning about the Mig 21 until the 1974 encounter, they had only few months to understand this aircraft. that against israeli air force's study of the aircraft for years is full marks to the Pakistanis. So when the encounter happened it was a single Mig 21 of the Syrian air force flown by a Pakistani against two israeli mirages IIIJ (J for Jewish). the israelis were careful; they engaged only when the Mig21 was on fumes, the outer end of their patrolling range. they wanted to score a kill against the Pakistanis, perhaps to prove a point having been humiliated during the 1967 war by few Pakistani pilots. didnt work out for them. a K13 Russian missile fired from Mig 21 sent one Mirage into a fireball while the other Mirage bee-lined back home.

I heard it became very difficult to fly due to a shifting centre of gravity when the fuel tanks were nearly empty. In Vietnam the F-4s had a secret advantage for a while - The APX-80 (combat tree) could remotely ping the MIG's IFF transponder in a way even the pilot was unaware of, essentially telling the F-4 that it was hostile beyond visual range.

@@jrjer7760 Yes, Croatia is still using MIG-21 for literally few more days when first 6/12 French Rafales arrive to Croatia ( I am writing this on April 16, 2024). It will be a quite a change for the Croatian pilots and the Croatian AirForce in general. I am not sure what they are going to do with the leftover MIGs (I believe only 4-5 are fully operational), but they will always have a place in every Croatian's heart because back in the 1990s when we fought our war for independence against the Milosevic''s Fascist Serbian regime ( and all the weapons of the former Yugoslav Federal Army which were ironically paid by Croatia & Slovenia through its tax and other financial contributions to the federal treasury which controlled and robbed by the Serbs in the late 80s). While were under an international arms embargo the Serbs suddenly got ALL the weapons of the former gigantic YU military including over 300 jet fighters, MIG-21 being the most numerous one with over 200+ planes, some Yugoslavian-made planes and 16 brand new at the time MIG-29s. Neeldess to say, Serbia had a complete control of the Croatian sky. So the only thing Crotaia could do is buy the weapons it needed (including the jet fighetrs) on the black market . So, Croatia purchased around 36 MIG-21s through some real slim shady secret back channels that went through Kyrgizstan, the Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Russia itself of course (back then the Russians would probably sell you a smal nuke warhead for 100 pairs of original Levi's 501 jeans lol). In any case, once Croatia got it's first MIG-21 squadrom there were no more Serbian planes flying over Croatia and the jet proved itself as a powerful weapon which caused fear amongst the enemy Serbian soldiers. Croatian pilots did some unbelievable maneuvers and ground assaults with laser precision target destructions using a 1960's plane in the war that took place 1991-1995. MIG 21 was originally designed as an air-to-air interceptor, not a bomber and not for supporting the ground troops during battles. During the final days of the Croatian War For Independence when the Croatian military launched Operation Storm in August of 1995 which liberated almost all of Croatia's occupied territory which was held by the Serbs for 4 years, Croatian MIGs took out all of Serbian communication centers and towers with super=precision hits using 1000lbs bombs. The Serbs thought they were being bombed by the NATO planes because they couldn;t believe MIG 21 could be used as such a precisive bomber. But it was and it was precise. So, I say one last hip hip hooray to the old MIGs and thank you for your service. Greetongs from Croatia:)

@@eaglemach9992 Again, there is nothing wrong with the airframe. It is super nimble in the right hands. That is the most important single part of the equation. New 21rst century avionics, a more powerful radar, combat management systems, electronic countermeasures and modern jet engines can make an older platform like this quite formidable. Radar and heat signature is very comparable to legacy Western fighters like the F-15 and F/A-18, and America still flies them. I mean, it's a single engine while the other two I mentioned are twin engine so saying the MiG-21's heat signature is "massive" is moot. That said, Russia has designed and built far superior combat aircraft like the Flanker series, especially advanced ones such as the SU-35 S and SU-30 SM, but in most situations, they are an overkill to what they would normally face in aerial combat.

That's because Arabs are clumsy beyond any help. They will never be able to operate an average weapon system efficiently. See how it went in Desert Storm. They're just plain stupid - except the Jordanians maybe - and the Israelis, like it or not, are one of the most capable people in the World. On top of that the Arabs were using the Soviet Doctrine, which is very lacking to say the least. The North Vietnamese were certainly more aggressive, more stubborn and more capable but still they suffered heavy losses.
