The piece is illustrating the thoughts going through the mind of a suicidal person. He/she is depressed and tired with life, but the happy memories keep coming back, causing the emotional struggle. Unfortunately the will of life fails and the hero kills himself...
For some music historians this piece was supposedly one of the proofs, that the composer's untimely death in Tatra mountains (an avalanche) was in fact a suicide. However the theory is very unlikely, according to his close friends and family, and has been proven wrong by his fellow mountainers. Today it is mostly assumed, that the piece was inspired by death of a writer and a friend of Karłowicz family - Józefat Nowiński (author of the play "The White Dove", to which the composer wrote a musical prologue entitled "Bianca da Molena").

Thank you for the music of Karlowicz. He is unjustly ignored .I programmed several of his works when I worked for Connecticut Public Radio during the 1980s.
He is one of the great romantic Polish composers, often overlooked and rarely programmed in the U. S. I think some conductor out there needs to help start a revival of his passionate music!
"Rarely programmed", my dear Malcolm Glass? Here in southern California, that word would be "never". That includes our two classical music radio stations. That is why I have given up listening to the radio stations and use You Tube for my daily listening of classical music.
Karlowicz was accidentally killed young by an avalanche in the Tatras montains. It was a great loss for the Polish music, and more generally for th music itself. Karlowicz was one of the most gifted composers of the neoromantic school. His tone poems as well as more ambitious scores like his sumphony and his concerto for violin show it without contest.
