    the horrifying thing about this movie is that 90 percent of the scenes seem like normal situations without context and could be any genre of movie. but its only those 4-5 scenes which truly make it horror. the rest of it is just anticipation. yet it's one of the scariest and bleakest movie i've ever seen

  • @Kevo6492

    @Kevo6492

    I wholeheartedly disagree with this. Even if presenting a scene without context as a normal conversation between the characters, the way it’s shot, acted, and directed lend to a suspenseful tension. The color palette and cinematography echo this as it’s meant to be muted and bleak despite the sunny setting. Even in this fake trailer when they show the drug scene, she looks troubled. It would be shot completely different in a rom com or just a movie that’s not meant to convey horror. That’s really what makes it so effective a horror film despite the seemingly cheerful setting. Ari knows how to craft suspense and atmosphere as a director instead of relying on jump scares.

    ummmm what? did you watch this film? haha. i'm gonna say there are definitely more than 4-5 scenes which make it seem like horror and could not be in any other genre. i'll start with 6 (spoiler alert): . . -dani's sister's suicide -the old people jumping off a cliff -people wearing face skin -the orgy -a character being burned alive in a bear suit -drinking and eating another person's um...bodily products. and there are a lot more, lol

    Straight up. It’s not even forcing comedy where there wasn’t any before. All of these scenes were funny in the actual movie. I know Ari Aster has said that he only makes horror movies because nobody would pick up the script if he pitched his plots as dramas or comedies. Making genre films lets him get away with more, so horror is only the necessary vehicle, but it’s not how he initially conceives of the stories.

    What this trailer makes it look like: Dani and Christian are in a rough patch with their relationship and as they’re visiting Pelle’s home town, they both have to decide if they still want to stay with each other. On the way, Dani starts growing closer to Pelle who very clearly has feelings for her. So Dani has to choose if she still wants to be with Christian, or if she should be with Pelle instead. What the movie actually is: Dani is an emotional wreck and is still recovering from the murder-suicide of her parents and sister. Christian is a gas-lighting jerk who doesn’t even care much for Dani and is just being in a relationship with her for the sake of avoiding confrontation. And Pelle exploits these two for his murderous cult by being the “nice guy” and manipulating the two.

    Reframing a folk horror film so that it's turned into a feel-good romantic comedy is...quite a leap to say the very least! The fact that Dani herself doesn't end up tortured and murdered as well is pretty much the only plot point which prevents "Midsommar" from being the complete polar opposite of a feel-good romantic film (that and the fact that at least in the original script and the director's cut, there are clues suggesting that it is Pelle's intent to have Dani for himself).

  • @moonlily1

    @moonlily1

    People still assumed that it was Pelle's intent to have Dani for himself. I mean, you could also interpret it as he's "honeypotting" her to draw her into the cult and it isn't real, but I'm inclined to think that it's both, he does gain from his successful recruiting and he does actually like her.

    @@MacJames4444 It's fairly obvious that Dani is being groomed to become a member of the Harga (quite possibly as Pelle's partner) since the other members invite and encourage her to participate in their customs to a far greater degree than even Christian. Christian and Dani have clearly both been marked as breeding stock for the Harga (Mark might have been as well but we don't have confirmation for it). However, Dani has a more pliant and dependent personality than Christian has -- especially after being psychologically traumatized by the murder/suicide staged by her sister -- which in several ways makes her a good fit for the communal lifestyle of the Harga and therefore more suitable as a potential recruit than as a sacrifice. From the outside, it could be argued that the Harga are subtly torturing Dani since they are trying to control and manipulate her to the point that she begins to identify with them -- in all fairness, nobody in this film could really be described as psychologically healthy and all the characters including Dani are manipulative to at least some extent. The irony of cults, however, is that the members typically do not describe what they are experiencing as torture -- often quite the reverse -- and indeed choose to remain even in the absence of any physical coercion.

  • @MacJames4444

    @MacJames4444

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@OreadNYC Hmmm, I guess it depends on what you would describe as torture. What you said can coexist with what I said. In particular, it does seem true that Dani is being groomed to be partnered with Pelle in some sort of way, but consider that (a) Pelle had like 0 qualms about kissing Dani earlier in the movie when she had been drugged and (b) the festival isn't over (it's stated to be a 9 day festival but the movie does not run for that long) and there's a lot of fertility and reproduction stuff in the festival. Dani seems at high risk of experiencing some sort of ritualized sexual violence in the remaining span of the festival.
