I don't know when I've had so much fun, watching a movie like this. What a most phenomenal tale of a story, and, vice versa, a story of a tale, and then some. Such a fine, great actor, and his older co-star. Loved the whole interior of the house "they broke into" ... such lavishness.

A fast paced comedy-mystery that contains a plot that has as many holes in it as Swiss Cheese but you won't care. A fine cast led by Louis Hayward makes this an enjoyable film to watch.

Perfect, just flipping Perfect...from beginning to end. What a dashing character Louis Hayward cuts. The comedy relief provided by J.C. Nugent's & the actor who played Willetts was phenomenal everything tied up at the end a la Lulbitsch or Capra. RMH/Ohio

The release date of this movie is 1938. I thought that was a little late to call it a 'Depression-era movie'. That was until the moment where he in way addresses the audience while lighting the fire place, and says 'houses without people, people without houses, funny world'. No wonder the screenwriter got hauled in to the HUAC. Such communist sympathies.

Sorry to say, but anyone who makes or watches movies made from comic books are just plain lazy and easily entertained, simple-minded boors. The fact that these shit films may be box-office hits just shows the pathetic condition of lowbrow American audiences.

R Simon I agree - she had smarts, humor, personality and looks. The problem with casting leading ladies today (except British TV/movies there heroines come in a variety of looks!) is there's a "gorgeous" and size 8 requirement to be met mostly - the actresses can't have other attributes that bring out their individual beauty - one reason why I love the old movies is the ladies showed moved than looks - a lot of them showed more than that.

Sadly, you don't tend to see many ladies wearing decent hats these days, just 'wimmin' sloppily dressed in baseball caps or beanies. That's this woman's opinion, anyway.

@@Old-Time-Fun I know, especially flat caps pushed too far back on the head by former baseball cap wearers. Casual seems to be the new excuse for laziness when it comes to clothing.

this is a wonderful character study. i've live through these and i'm sure many have. in fact in first grade i played hooky with my buddy and he was the nervous guy and turned himself in so i ended up not getting away with what would have been a lovely day off. well this, doctor guy, is the nervous one and he, i'm betting will botch everything up. i'm having fun here. thank you.

Did people back in those days dress better on a regular basis, or is that just for the movies where they're always dressed like one does on dress up days?, I wonder.

Most people back then did dress "like that" (suits n dresses etc).

and they did not leave the house without a hat or gloves. Yep, people had style then, you dressed to look good. torn jeans, braless, a$$ hanging out was not a good thing.

I'm not at all surprised that notAbba wasn't impressed with this wonderful *happy ending* comedy-drama, from the platignum-plated Hollywood of real America; this long before Abba and all-that-Jazz were even a fly-dung smudge of post-Kennedy, VietNam anti-matter on the otherwise unflawed, squeaky-clean windscreen of one of those gleaming Plymouth Phaetons in the passing parade. Thank God for those super *talkies*, and to blazes with the unintelligible waste of nitrate we are landed with today.
