I first watched this movie as a teenager probably in the late '70s or very early '80s. I remember telling my dad somethinbg like "it's such a realistic depiction of NYC!". (I grew up in rural Ohio) My dad replied "well, it's A depiction of NYC!". As usual, he was right. As a young adult, I loved NYC. Of colurse, Nilsson's song is incredible.
One of the best films ever. ❤❤❤
Dustin Hoffman was an extremely lucky man when he started out in the movies in the 1960’s. He got starring roles in two of the very best movies or that decade, or any other decade for that matter!. This movie “Midnight Cowboy” and “The Graduate” were both wonderful movies and remain two of my all-time favourites.

Midnight Cowboy, yes, but The Graduate? It doesn't hold up. 8th graders aren't that naïve.
This film is so poignant at the end it always makes me tear up. They were truly friends.
Nilson is a brilliant songwriter and singer. This unforgettable film keeps this song alive.

What a great, melancholic movie. Only true art is capable of letting real beauty shimmer through tragedy and despair.

Real
I saw it in 1970 during the start of my senior year in high school. It had been edited from the initial release the year before from X to R. Three of us skipped school that afternoon to go see it. I have it on my DVR and recently rewatched it. Still as powerful now as it was back 50+ years ago.

Classic movie. Tells quite a story about America. I didnt see it until I was older. I was too young when it came out. But it really struck me when I did see it.
The movie was simple greatness. No other like it.
I just remembered as a child looking at the glorious sun rays pouring through the leaves of a tree. Birds flying everywhere in that same tree. And in the background listening to this song!!!!! It is simply amazing back in 1975!!!!!!!
Harry Nilsson, the composer and performer of this classic tune had a string of hits. He was a very talented but troubled artist.

Loving nod to all the key moments in this extraordinary film - beautiful editing job which evoked memories and emotions. Thank you!
Such a touchable movie and song, too!!❤❤
Once we were young
A lot of people say “The Graduate” or “Bonnie and Clyde” or even “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was the movie that really changed Hollywood filmmaking - but I’d like to think it was THIS - "Midnight Cowboy" - that really changed the scope and potential of film-making.
This is easily one of the most sad movies I've ever experienced.
Hoffman and Voight are acting masters. I miss them in real movies.
Classic movie 60´s!
Only Harry could sing this song. Great film.

I like the superhero genre but I LOVE this.
For a film directed by a British person, Midnight Cowboy has more Americana going for it than most films ever produced in my opinion. Great writing and acting. I saw this X Rated film (I think the first ever) when it came out in the theatres. One of the best movies of all time in my opinion. I'm also a Harry Nilsson fan, have lots of his records.
Absolutely A Masterpiece !!!
A true cinematic masterpiece.
Dustin Hoffman's shouting at the cab wasn't acting and wasn't in the script. The street had been cordoned off to film the scene but the taxi barreled through the set. When he tried to plow past the actors, what you see is his nearly hitting them. Hoffman's furious response "we're walking here!" was genuine.

Everybody's talkin' at me I don't hear a word they're sayin' Only the echoes of my mind People stoppin', starin' I can't see their faces Only the shadows of their eyes I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin' Through the pourin' rain Goin' where the weather suits my clothes Bankin' off of the northeast winds Sailin' on summer breeze And skippin' over the ocean like a stone I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin' Through the pourin' rain Goin' where the weather suits my clothes Bankin' off of the northeast winds Sailin' on summer breeze And skippin' over the ocean like a stone Everybody's talkin' at me

You were alone in a theater smoking a joint... in the 70's? You sure about that? People got arrested back then for that... 30 days.
At 0:40 - this was when the MONY Building's degree sign (on the third lamp bank) took up 14 bulbs in a 6 x 5 grid. That lighting arrangement dated to about 1960-61. And yes, this was the display that entranced Tommy James to co-write "Mony Mony" (which was a hit for him and his group, The Shondells, when this was being filmed). Notice, out of 131 bulbs on the 56th Street side (facing south), two are missing, thus only 129 are in place. (And on the Broadway side, facing east, 128 of 130 bulbs are present.) In 1972-73, the top frontage would be radically altered with the then-current MONY logo, and the degree sign changed to 12 bulbs in a 5 x 5 grid.
My favorite movie of all time-wow
LOVE the orchestration arrangements in this song. by Music Arranger, George Tipton. Music Arrangers DON'T get enough credit for helping to make songs BIG hits.

Truly beautiful song just like the seventies
I saw this movie over a dozen times when it was in theaters.
To this day, I consider this film to be one of the most depressing I have ever seen. Ten years after this film was made, I lived in NYC and it was pretty much still like this: gritty and immoral, tough and uncompromising. I grew up in seconds because being naive would have spelled disaster.

Most depressing for me would be The Misfits, the last film for Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Monty Clift, about corralling mustangs in the desert to sell for pet food. I will NEVER watch that again.

NYC was arguably a sleazier, rougher place then than it is now.
Love John Voight`s look after he throws the working clothes away. That is how you look when you leave BABYLON.
