    Hey Scott! Thank you so much for teaching this 53 year old lady (with no building skills!) how to put a skylight in her van. I did it yesterday and had your video guiding me on my computer in the van with me. I'm achey and exhausted but I did it and it rained all night last night and it is not leaking. I will say, I did have a nightmare about hitting my head like you did. Thanks for being my guide. Take care!

    So how do you like your skylight? Did you get the same one that he put in? The reason I'm asking is I just bought a Ram pro master 3500 I'm shopping right now for a skylight I wanted a big 1 that I could use as an escape if I needed to plus it gives so much light. I was also impressed, you said you are 53 and DIYing your van. I am 64 and questioning myself!!! Would love to hear and see from you if interested in sharing your experiences so far? And help or suggestions welcome!!!

    I used the same sealants as you when I put my skylight in my van last year but found a problem last week when it started to leak. You probably already know this but the manufacturers use a release agent when casting the skylight frames and neither silicon sealant nor Sikaflex adhere to it. I just took out the screws and with hand pressure, the whole skylight lifted easily with the frame completely clean. It needed washing with soapy water, vinegar and white spirit to remove the release agent, then it went back on with a good seal this time. All the best, Pete

    Hi Pete I did not know this however it seems abit counter intuitive to the fitment of the unit so I would be surprised if this is a standard for all skylights? There was nothing mentioned in the info sent with the rooflight but thanks for the info. So far no troubles with ours so will see how it fairs. In addition anyone looking to use this rooflight and/or video might be worth getting in touch with the manufacturer and posting back here for future watchers. Either that or air on the side of caution and use white spirit regardless

    Thanks so much for posting this, I’m looking to fit exactly the same rooflight into a 2011 Transit Connect on my next days off. I would never have thought of making relief-cuts and crimp the metal. I was going to cut ‘pucks’ out of an acrylic chopping-board, to fill the gaps!

    Great video, I’m struggling with the installation of an ac unit because of the ribs on top of the car. The sealing gasket won’t seal over the ribs. Looks like it’s possible to flatten them. Might give that a try. Can you flatten 30 cm or ist that a bad idea because of rust?

  • @ScottAndJen

    @ScottAndJen

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tyler I couldnt really comprehend what you mean unless I saw a picture. I have heard people mention cutting the metal can weaken the roof's structure but I cant really see it being a problem. Also if rust is the issue just clean the area well of any existing rust and give the bare metal areas created by the cuts you make a good coating of anti rust paint. I assume the cuts will be covered with the A.C. unit anyway so if your mastic/sikaflex application is good then water should not get to the area to create rust in the first place.

    No leaks thus far and been in for over a year. Most of that time has been in very hot and varying weather conditions so expansion and contraction. I imagine they might come at some point but hopefully not. Good luck

    Thanks for that observation. Admittedly the finish could have been a little better. In hindsight I should have looked to see if the pop up window was removable. However I would like to congratulate you on you ability to pick out a negative on a video that quite evidentally has helped alot of people, that's some skill. I'm not usually much of a gambler but on a hunch I would take a stab that said comment is a reflection of your bitterness and more notably your own lack of perceived achievement in a relation to others. A good book for you - 12 Rules for life an antidote to chaos. In particular chapter 6 - Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world. Good luck to you
