    Thank you Kenny for coming through again with another extremely helpful well thought video! I got M-Audio - Oxygen 25 that offers out-of-the-box integration with popular DAWs including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, and many more. (No Reaper mentioned) But as you say - this is better for programming it ourselves. I've got to revisit this again and get this midi controller cooking. Great stuff. Clearly explained and easy to understand as is your style. Much appreciated as usual! :-) I know you've been real busy lately but would love to see a series on tempo, tempo maps etc.

    A video like this shows the infinite possibility of Reaper combined with MIDI controllers... you really do get the "analog-recording", tactile feel when you take the time to configure Reaper to respond to your MIDI controller.... it's a huge time-saver too... and anything where you use the mouse a little less is a beautiful thing. Some of the best MIDI controllers for use with Reaper as a control surface: Arturia Keylab Essential (actually has a Reaper map in DAW mode, using "Mackie Control" emulation) Arturia Keylab MK2 Arturia Beatstep (16 endless encoders, 16 pads that can be used as midi CC buttons)... and 16 maps/presets! Arturia Minilab MK2 (16 endless encoders, 8 pads x 2 banks, and 25 mini keys) Korg Nanokontrol2 (cheap and effective) Behringer X-Touch Mini (cheap and effective-- 8 endless encoders, CLICKABLE too) NI Maschine MK2 (cheap used, and brilliant as a MIDI controller-- bonus, you get super-responsive 4x4 drum pads, and 8 pages of them) NI Maschine MK3 (not cheap, but great!) NI Maschine Studio (you get the color screens of the MK3 but for super cheap-- used these go for about $250-300 these days, often including a Maschine software license!) NI Maschine Mikro MK2 (missing the encoders, but the click-wheel is super useful with Reaper) not to mention the Nektars, the M-Audio Axiom / Oxygen / Axiom Pro, etc... Lots of options. Take the time to set up your stuff and you will love Reaper even more. Nothing is more configurable or powerful.

    Great video! It makes it all so simple! Actually it works for me with the M-Audio Oxigene49, but changing the MIDI channel affects the music too. If, for example, I'm using a 4-channel VSTi and partition the keyboard using MIDI ch1 on basses and MIDI ch2 on the right side of the keyboard, I cannot change the MIDI channel to switch different "Command Banks". Any suggestion? Thanks.

    Please disregard my previous question. I figured out that the Faderport isn't considered a midi controller. It's obviously a usb controller. I figured out not to enable it in midi device but add it under Control device at the bottom of the options window. Went to the drop down for input and output and chose Faderport. Then I went back to the actions screen list to add the mute button.

    hey! thank you for the turorial. I have a problem after mapping some keys to play/stop/Record/snap/metronome etc.. because if I want to up te octave of my midi keyboard I found out that pressing some keys I reach that number (key) which is already assigned to a transport control, and it plays the note and at the same time it does its function of play/stop/etc (this happens even if I assign them to different channels) How should I do? Thank you!

    Is it possible to treat a knob by treating the function of twisting it both ways as 2 different functions? As in, twist right = function x, twist left = function y? I'm trying to map a beatstep, and for say, selecting previous and next track, it's not letting me use the same knob. It would be far more helpful to keep both functions restricted to one knob. Is this possible?

    wow I really wish when I did this it worked that smoothly. If I assign an action to any midi knob or slider it continuously turns off and on. For example, I assigned the record action to the record button on my midi keyboard. Then when I press record on my midi keyboard it will record for a couple seconds then not record. Record again, then off again. Same with another actions I do. When I assign next track in the actions list to a button on my midi keyboard and press it it will keep going through to the next track until the end of the tracks. I cannot figure this out someone please help. Thank You!

    As far as i have been able to figure out there is no way for reaper natively to send messeges back to the controller without using it in another mode or using plugins for reaper. So this is kind of a bad situation as a lot of modern controlers have lights and automated faders and what not.. so in tht case reaper will not send what you do in the software back to the controller as it just works one way.

    I think it should work if properly mapped. Controls do basically what you assign them to do. I don't play live, but in addition to a midi keyboard, I have a Line 6 Fbv mkii. There are others similar and not too expensive. Also, you might want to check out the Guitar Wing.

  • @chrismeyers7487
    @chrismeyers74877 жыл бұрын

    Quick question! I'm somewhat new to this stuff, so I hope I can make enough sense that you may be able to help me a little. I just got the NanoKontrol2 (8 faders/8 knobs - transport buttons, blahblah) So, is what I'm looking for, is to be able to open up Reaper (any project; any time) and be able to assign ANY parameter within the project, to any fader/knob that I choose: Track parameters, VST parameters, Sends/Receives - anything that can be automated/controlled. So, for example, I have 4 tracks- Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin. Each instrument has 4 parameters I need to assign and control (1-expression, 2-attack, 3-release, 4-dynamics). I want to use 4 of the faders (1-4) to control the 4 different parameters (when in write/latch/touch modes) for each of these tracks, but use the same faders/knobs for each track's VST parameter. So, if I assign fader 1 to expression for track 1(Bass), I want to be able to use fader 1, for expression on Track 2 (cello), and it not effect the same parameters on the previous track(s). And, if it's possible, when I'm NOT inside the VST, or have the automation set to write/latch modes, I may want to control the volume of the tracks (ex: tracks 1-8; faders 1-8), but I don't want that to effect the automation I just wrote for the VST. I assume, that if the automation parameters aren't armed to record/write/touch, then it should be fine, but I don't want to lose the MIDI CC assignments to the VST parameters when jumping back and forth from the VST to the track. I guess to simplify my question, is there a way to assign the same fader/knob to multiple parameters within the project, without manipulating ALL the data that is assigned to that fader/knob? I want to use the same faders, for the same parameters, on multiple tracks, but I don't want them to all write at the same time. Sorry for the lengthy question! Thank you so much for your time!
