Midas DM16 Analog Mixer First Look and Review

Ғылым және технология

We've got the Midas DM16 analog mixing board in for a first look & review this week. I'm calling this one a bit of both, since I've used this series of mixers in real life work with some regularity a few years back. A client replaced a small rack mixer with a DM12 & I had the opportunity to work with it for a number of live events, performances and speeches. So more than usual, I feel comfortable offering some real world observations I made at that time.

Both the 8 and 16 models can fit in my carry-on and I only really interact with them using an iPad mini & it has been perfect for all sorts of situations from weddings to corporate & broadcast events to film festivals. They're a bit more money, but you'll save it in the size and weight costs when traveling pretty quickly.

The EPM6 is probably the better buy for support and service in the long run (and it is their original design) but if the specs are right, it is ten pounds heavier than the DM12.

    Well you are exactly the person this style of mixer is designed for, keyboards or synths etc. so it's a good choice. Personally, I'd go with the Soundcraft for the overall quality and support they offer, and the fact that it's their design in the first place. I don't know if you'd be able to tell a real tangible difference in the EQ quality side by side, but I haven't A/B'd them directly, so I don't want to speak out of turn. Really good video! I use a Soundcraft K3 as a main mixer and also a little Spirit SX as a sub mixer. I mainly work with line level signals from synthesizers etc and have been looking at a low cost replacement for the little sub mixer as it has been becoming unreliable etc. I looked at this Midas and I get that it's made to a cost but the lack of even a single bus, the weird eq, the lack of level controls on the aux'es and lack of hpf just leave me scratching my head. At this point may as well get a Behringer desk for a similar cost which has all those things. As for who uses an analogue mixer now days? Plenty of people with small studios or making electronic music who like something hands on, actually that's where I see a lot of the demand is in the smaller format analogue mixers.

    I had a Allen&Heat Zed 16R but it broke so I was looking for an replacement. I am doing mostly vocal recording to premade music (Karaoke tracks) so my need for track count is not that great. Also someone with a guitar will sometimes come along, and keyboards. No drums though. So.. I was looking for a cheap and physical small, but good quality mixer for analog summing and processing in my home studio. This sells now for $373 in Norway ( about 4 000 NOK) I find this mixer interesting because of the insert points on every channels and also the mixbus insert. The Soundcraft mixer you mention is (at least here in Norway) $100 more expensive. I dont need the micpres or eq as I will use rack mounted Eq, Compressors and filters (warm audio, dbx, midas, SSL and etc. ) via insert point. This is the cheapest mixer I found that have all the insert points. I was looking at Mackie Onyx but it only have 4 inserts point and no main inserts and it is even more expensive. I decided I will go for the Mackie Onyx 12 as a tracking mixer using external preamps into line in. Because of the build in efx prosessor I can easy add this to the artist headphone mix. Nobody like to sing dry. And also it have USB Multitrack out on every channels and 2 stereo returns. Makes it perfect for tracking the things I do. What matters to me is that it is quiet and will not add too much noise into the mix. The "problems" you mention, are not problems for me, as high pass filter I have anywhere else in my chain, even Cubase have this if I am in a pinch. I will use line in only and I think Cubase will deliver a good signal to this mixer using my Audient evo16 interface. I will not use this mixer live. For small live gigs I use QSC Touch mix 16 (Digital)

    You don't necessarily need the low-cut filters on the mixer mic input. Use really good microphones and, if needed, engage the built in low-cut filter and pad. Try filtering unwanted low frequency noises before entering the mixer to avoid overloading the microphone preamplifier input.

    @@DcSoundOp I am not asking anyone anything. I simply said that you have an alternative to work with this particular mixer design. Sometimes we have to be able to work with what we have and be able to find the required solution. Yes, it would have been nice to see those filters built-in on this mixer, or any mixer for that matter, but they are not. Some Soundcraft models don't have these filters, also. Personally, I would like to se a direct out socket for every microphone input on every mixer, regardless of brand, but it is not the case these days. It's a Midas design decision and we have to work with it or to look somewhere else. No one is forcing us to buy or use an equipment we can't use or having difficulties to adjust with. Comfort matters to many.

  • @DcSoundOp

    @DcSoundOp

    Your alternative was to use 'really good mics' which has nothing to do with high pass filters & to engage the pad on the mics too, which really has nothing to do with working around the lack of a HPF. External inline high pass filters for each channel would also exceed the cost of this mixer, by a good margin, so that's hardly practical. Given that, a typical band using SM58's for vocals and mics like sm57's for guitar amps and drums would be totally hosed trying to use this mixer on a small gig. You should also check out the part of the video again where I talk about those Soundcraft mixers you mention ;) Thanks for the messages Valentin 👊🏼

    @@DcSoundOp When I said "really good mics" I meant that you can use microphones that cost a bit more than others, but they have built-in low cut filters and pad capabilities. I would use these microphones even if the mixer would have built-in low-cut filters. On the other hand, why should I save money buying this mixer, knowing that I want those filters and direct outs on it from the start? Good equipment, with good capabilities, costs money, and here we have a mixer who is playing in other league, definitely not pro oriented. Me, personally, I live by this statement: fight the noise as close to the source.

    Good review, I'm looking for a replacement sub desk for a church, for visiting musicians/bands to use, and not get involved with the main mixer, so simplicity is the name of the game here. For some of our visitors less controls would be good - no aux, no tone, & way more limited input gain range etc. I hear you when it comes to a high pass filter on the inputs, our main desk has them and they make a good difference on the lectern and other presenter mic's, just a pity the designers got it a bit wrong, as in when our priest gets stuck into the lectern and pushes it into the red, our MG20XU's filters bark quite badly. That desk has to handle weakly voiced old ladies all the way to a very active priest - quite often with the desk unattended, locked away in a console, hoping its dynamic compressors can give us a usable out - which mostly they do.

  • @DcSoundOp

    @DcSoundOp

    Thanks for the message Paul. Yeah the lack of HPF makes this one a hard choice for anything like what you are doing. This console is really better suited to line level mixing or sub-mixing, like for synths or keyboard players who don't need the HPF.

  • @paulstubbs7678

    @paulstubbs7678

    @@DcSoundOp I can always add HPF at the main desk, the sub has no compressors etc, (nothing to get 'pumped' by stray subsonics) so as long as it does not go into the red, that can be sorted out down the track so to speak. Actually several of the singers stand back too far, so I'm seeking extra low end at times.

Budget, how many inputs you need, how many outputs, what type of mixing you're doing with the console etc. If you're looking for a mixer in this price range for churches, the Allen & Heath ZED mixers are quite good and reliable, and if you can go a bit higher you can get into the Soundcraft Signature 12 mixer which are very usable mixers for house of worship settings.

Sadly, once manufacturers get assimilated by the behringer borg, any sense of reality goes out of the window. Very sad to see this happen to the once-great Midas.
