    A lot of booktubers have come and gone throughout the years, they have changed their content or their style, but I always come to this channel when I want a recommendation or just feel nostalgic to what the community uses to be, because you have been incredibly consistent since the beginning. Love you Sam and thanks for adding more books to my TBR.

    Oof I resonate so much with what you said about today’s romances! I have so few ships and crushes nowadays because they are all SO FAST! Where is the longing? The pining? The Angst?! They are all in love midway through the first books now…

    and I get so boooooored when they get together because from that point it's just a countdown to where they are going to have some dumb miscommunication so that we can add drama when we could have just had all the drama and pining before and not done that dumb shit!!!

    @@ThoughtsOnTomes Exactly! Today’s “enemies to lovers” (they aren’t but that’s a whole other issue) fall in love right away, have everything happening by book 1 and then the miscommunication trope kicks in and they are “enemies” by book 2 or more like they are mad at each other… One of the few super slow burn/pinning for DAYS book series that has been killing me recently is Tahareh Mafi’s “This Woven Kingdom series” but you have to wait until book 2 to get it ! But boy… do I miss the old romance days!

    This video reminded me of why I love booktube so much. I have never heard of the weaver and the witch queen before but hearing you talking about it ended up giving me a huge breakthrough for a viking set novel I've been stuck on the backburner with for THREE YEARS! I also ended up putting A study in drowning and Where Peace is Lost on my TBR!

    My favourite books this year so far were The Dagger and the Forbidden Heir by Emilia Jae (indie author)-which looks like it will have wyverns in the rest of the series and The Crimson Moth by Kristen Ciccarelli-such a great witch vs witch hunter (enemies to lovers and then gets even more complicated). I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy with romance, but with a bigger plot and just about romance. Happy reading!

    Some of my most anticipated releases of the second half of the year are A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher (dark goose girl retelling), The City in Glass by Nhgi Vo (new standalone), and Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan (I gather this needs a content warning for cancer; the author is a cancer survivor, so it's written from personal experience, but I don't know if it's something you'd want to read or avoid).

    I loved To Shape A Dragon's Breath, such a fun and fantastic book. I too love Ava Reids stuff but A Study In Drowning and Lady Macbeth really let me down. Got an arc of it recently and sadly all the negative reviews Id read were right, the way she handles Lady Macbeths character is not great, and theres a weird amount of antiscottish sentiment in it. Cannot wait for The Lotus Empire, its my most anticipated release even more so than Stormlight 5. I too really like the Final Strife books ( 3rd is September I think) but was really let down by Faebound, I found the romances were very very rushed.

    I definitely know what you mean on the quality of romances in books lately. So many books I've read recently have had the main love interests get together partway through the first book, and more often than not the relationship feels purely built on lust. I really miss drawn out slow burns built on real emotional connection. Like, I don't mind reading smut, but if it's just smut for smut's sake it feels kinda boring and gratuitous to me. I need that built up emotional connection first, not just the lust.

    Best books I read this year so far were Babel, A Dowry of Blood, and The Hero of Ages. I also read the wheel of time which I think is a series greater than the sum of its parts. I gave each individual book 3-4 stars but I think the series as a whole reaches 4-4.5 stars

    @@ThoughtsOnTomes the bad things I’ve seen about it surround the fact that it isn’t super true to the play or the accepted characterization of Lady Macbeth from it. Which I think is a fair appraisal. But I encourage reading it with the question “What’s in a name?” if you do pick it up!

    it's part of the marketing boycott to put pressure on the publisher and increase awareness for the audience. the publisher won't know how much marketing they are missing out on if we don't mention when there are books we would be talking about and providing free labor for if we don't mention it.

  • @asdfghjklasdfghjkl321

    @ThoughtsOnTomes That still doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, won't they though? If it's being purposely being done, then won't they feel it, regardless if you meantion it or not as long as you're doing it? As to my pervious point as it's bizarre to me to bring something up only to say that you're not gonna talk about it? And then how on earth is doing a hobby considered labor unless said labor is a job? Of course an ideal situation would be to do something you enjoy doing but I do admit this is something not many people can do. But if you feel like talking about books and reading books is labor to you, maybe get another hobby then??? And in terms of spreading awareness to the audience just feels like virtue signaling to me 🤷🏽‍♀️

  • @ThoughtsOnTomes

    @ThoughtsOnTomes

    19 күн бұрын

    @@asdfghjklasdfghjkl321it’s not virtue signaling to spread awareness about a boycott - that’s literally how boycotts work. And publishers do rely on people doing this hobby for free labor. It helps publishers and they expect us to shut up and be quiet when we have legitimate concerns. Tbh all your arguments against a boycott are in bad faith. I recommend you check the resources that I listed when discussing the boycott (which again is a reason for discussing the boycott along with expressing solidarity for those harmed). Readers for Accountability has those resources for you to educate yourself more about the boycott and the reasons for it.

    @ThoughtsOnTomes "Educate yourself more" yup, I knew it. People who say things like this are the issue. It's hard to quantify what I want to say properly, but considering on top of that you're clearly trying to position yourself as hollier as thou, and to not even explain yourself other than you're not even gonna talk about something you brought up in the first place that you didn't have to, yup, no thanks. Totally agree re: hackneyed romance plots/insta-love/a sudden abundance of smut. I kind of resent the rise of the romantasy subgenre-I feel like a lot of sff authors may feel pressured to include romance in their books in order to reach more readers and ride this wave. Or maybe I’m just cynical lmao. Anyway my favorite books this year have been the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Both authors blew me away with their talent. 🤌🏼
