I have seen this "book freak out tag" for a couple of years, but I've never watched one. I thought it was all about how they have too many books to get through by the end of the year. 😮 I'm glad to have clicked on your video, as I really enjoyed your answers! P.S. those earrings ❤❤

Sarah Waters is just so good. I really need to check our Dorothy Dunnett and just bought a Morgan Llewelyn before your video even finished 😂!!! I am also in love with my Kindle - it's my preferred way to read physically now and yet I still cannot resist buying physical books. They just give me so much pleasure. What a wonderful start to the year, Shelly and thank you for your kind words. I am dipping my toes back in to Booktube and catching up with friends again x

People of the book is my favourite Geraldine Brooks, better than March IMHO. I still haven't read Horse, but it is sitting beside me on the shelf. When I started reading her work around 2001, I read A Year of Wonders ( I agree the ending was a bit out there), I've also read a bit of her non-fiction, she was a foreign correspondent and I was blown away by her Nine Part of Desire but I think it might not have aged well.

Shelly, have you read Lady Tan's Circle of Women? I haven't heard you talking about that book so if you haven't read it please do, I highly highly recommend it, I believe you would love it. It came out last year, it was my first read for this year and the best so far. I'm still thinking about it and I wish it would become a film one day (hopefully sooner than later). Such an amazing story and a wonderful main character. Loved everything about it! Please please read it if you haven't already.

An opportunity to write a long comment on one of your videos? Say no more 1. How is your reading going? Pretty good, I set the goal for myself of finishing some of the series that I've started over the last year or two that I either got distracted from or just had put down and not picked back up again. Also rediscovered a love for historical fiction, partly thanks to all of your recommendations of great historical fiction reads! 2. The best book you’ve read so far this year? Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. It gripped me in a way that I was not expecting at all. It had the kind of romance I'd always looked for in books, the fantasy elements were interesting and well thought out, and had such deep discussions on grief, moving on from it, and how you can lean on others to help you through that grief. 3. The best sequel you’ve read so far this year? Is it cheating if I say the Red Rising Trilogy? I loved the whole series so much that I read one right after the other, it almost felt like one big book rather than 3 seperate books. 4. a) A new release you haven’t read yet but want to? Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar, I'm not sure what it's about but I saw it in a bookstore and was interested in it. b) Most anticipated release for the second half of the year? I also have not been keeping up with the new releases c) What books do you need to read before the end of the year? None that I really feel that I need to read, but I would like to finish the Age of Madness and First Law series by Joe Abercrombie 5. Genre you've been loving/reading the most. Historical fiction, again thank you for all the amazing recommendations! It may not be the genre I've read the most, Fantasy will always win that battle, but it's definitely been the highlight of my year reading wise and so many of the books in my favorites category from this year have been Historical Fiction 6. The biggest disappointment? A Court of Thorns and Roses, I went into the book thinking I probably wasn't going to be super into it based on what I'd read and heard of it. And I was right, I didn't like the characters, the writing, nor the plot. The disappointment stems from it being such a hyped up series that I thought maybe there was something to it that would suck me in just like it did with so many, and there just wasn't. 7. The biggest surprise? Darth Plagueis by James Luceno set a new bar in excellence for Star Wars books for me. I knew it was "good" for a Star Wars book but I was wrong it's not just a "Good Star Wars" book its a good book in general. The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters was another surprise for me. I loved how it tackled such sensitive topics for that time period and the anxieties that the characters felt about their decisions and feelings for one another. I couldn't put it down and even listened to it while I was at the gym 8. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)? New to me would be Sarah Waters, I ended up adding all of the books I could find on Libby to my tbr once I'd finished The Paying Guests 9. How does your reading break down in terms of mechanism? My reading the last few years has been 90% listening to audio books. I just love them, they're on while I'm driving to work, they're on while I'm on my break, they're on while I'm cleaning my home or doing yard work, they're on basically any time I don't need to interact with another person haha. But I have been slowly working on reading more and more physical books as well and thats been going super well. I made the goal of reading 2 physical books a month this year and I've been sticking to it! 10. What is your newest favorite character? Sol Weintraub in Hyperion. I'm a sucker for parental figures that do everything and sacrifice everything to save their children from the fates they're cursed with 11. A book that made you cry? Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. My copy has water damage from all the tears 12. A book that made you happy? Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the book itself was great but what it did to really make me happy was that it captured the attention of my friends. They became so invested in it while I had it playing in the car on our way to a camping trip that they requested that we listen to it while we were relaxing at the campsite. It was such a wonderful experience getting to communally enjoy a story like that with the people I love. 13. Most beautiful book you have acquired this year? Probably the Stormlight Archive set, my friend got it for me technically last year for my birthday but they're each just beautiful books that I want to display. 14. The book you've learned the most from? - OR - A book that changed your opinion about something? Stolen Focus by Johann Hari. It gave a lot of useful insight into how our world is now designed to shrink out attention spans and how we can go about trying to get them back so that we can focus on the things we want to focus on rather than the little light box in our pockets 15. Content creators you've been loving You of course! But also Karsten Runquist(@KarstenRunquist) for movies, MelonTeee (@Melonteee) does some really well thought out and deep discussions on One Piece as a story (Lots of spoilers though so may want to avoid for now 😅), and Noelle D. (@NoelleD.) she's a small booktuber who seems to have just started out this year and I've really enjoyed her videos. She's been reading a lot of similar books to what I read when I was starting to get back into reading.

I tried to read Katherine by Anya Seton, but I found it so boring and she was just flat and unengaging , I dnf it half way through. Did we read the same book😮? Maybe I will try again, or maybe not. Anyway, I found you today, it's really a treat to find a good booktuber , I really enjoy your content.

Possibly weird comment, but i almost get the feeling that you may have accidentally skipped one or a few chapters out of Tony Tony Chopper's backstory in One Piece. Maybe; maybe not. Do you remember what happened and how it happened to Chopper's first mentor, Hiriluk? (Note: there is no malice or condescension intended in my comment. And of course, I'm not trying to get you to explain or prove anything; i just hope nothing was accidentally skipped.) I left other comments on the video, so hopefully all these comments help the algorithm!
