Probably watched 10k production videos and never heard anyone mention this before. Makes perfect sense - I do check in mono but probably not regular enough, but will be going through this process on every mix going forward. Thanks very much!

It's OK bro. We all learn from each other. Been talking about this with every producer I work with and shedding light about this same issue. Mid Side phase is horrible even for loudness. Just had a client who is a professional producer for a great media company, who mixed and mastered his own song for a client and send it to him. his client heard it on the TV and was so upset that the volume of the song is too low compared to other songs. So he send it to me to test what is the problem. Turned out the client tv is mono and half of his samples and loops were phasing. So in stereo it sounded perfect but in mono half of the mid range disappeared. It's a huge problem if its not fixed at a early stage in mixing or even production

Interesting info and demonstration,So the side should be lower than the mid ;say at around 10db or close ?

  • @HomeStudioGuru

Yep something like that...the idea is to use your ears and try to get as much side volume as possible without reducing the energy of the whole sound when you listen in mono. But 7 to 10db difference is a good starting point, also depends on the instrument or sound and how important it is in the mix..

Yes it is. Every Sample pack I have , got the same issue. Some of them even just samples even from Vengeance. Everyone wanna hear a wide sound, so sound creators make sure they give you what producers wants 😆 🤣

Looks like you have DC offset issues with the wave file. You can fix the issue you are discussing easily with Izotope RX. Just select DC offset and it will automatically correct any correlation issues

  • @HomeStudioGuru

Sorry, that's not true. This is the cause of the sound designer trying to create a very wide sound without caring about phase. You can try and fix it with DC offset, but it will do exactly nothing. Try it yourself on any loop in your collection and see if DC offset help and let me know if it worked with you. This is definitely the cause of either widening sound too much, or adding voicing in the digital synthesizer without caring about phase, or so much reverb. It's always one of these. DC offset happens in hardware, and rarely in software synthesizers in the box.

@HomeStudioGuru looking at the wave file and you can see the audio signal is longer on one side than it is on the other on the right channel.

@teemack1316 I actually tried with DC offset on the same loop in the video and on the span nothing happened at all

@@HomeStudioGuru If you select DC offset in Izotope RX, a menu will pop up showing the phase correlation in numbers. Once you select "fix" and run another analysis, the numbers should move closer to zero or the plus side near zero.

@HomeStudioGuru Are you using Izotope RX? The phase correlation will pop up showing numbers on both the left and the right. The AI will process it and fix the phase correlation. You need to select DC offset from the selection menu.
