MID-SEASON Pawpaw CULTIVARS (Asimina triloba) for the HEART of Pawpaw COUNTRY

Музыка

These are the mid-season cultivars; among them are some of my very favorite flavors. Wabash, Shenandoah, NC-1, Green River Belle, and a few others. These are for people in the middle of pawpaw country who want to grow something special. Cultivars are advantageous because they have bigger, fleshier fruit, few seeds, and no unpleasant aftertaste.
Notably absent is PA Golden, which is mid-season. There are potentially (4) cultivars floating around under the name, as the cultivar is actually a series, 1-4. Nobody knows what anyone has, and it's very confusing. Some people report mediocre flavor, others report good flavor. We omitted PA Golden from the series for this complicated reason.

Watching your videos makes me want to get everything pawpaw out there. I've got a few so far: Shenandoah and Sunflower (just got today), Wells, KSU Benson & KSU Atwood just got them a few days back. Most online shops don't have any available now. I got mine from a local shop(about 90 miles away from me, but I could get there and pick in person). I plan on getting Susquehana and a few more cultivars they have at this nursery. I was not able to get more earlier today because I thought I have enough already. Like I said, after I came home and watched more of your videos, I am definitely going back to this nursery and get more. They don't have everything, but I saw they have Potomac, Susquehana, and I think there is another one. They are so expensive though.

I wish we were neighbors lmfao. I feel like I’m the only person in my entire friend group, let alone town, that knows these plants and is more interested in finding new cultivars and varieties.

Great video. GRB and Chappelle are two I haven’t tried yet and the sound fantastic. I’ve had excellent growth out of both trees. Every easy to establish.

👋, wanted to let you know that I've been watching your videos and like the presentation. Because of this I decided to subscribe and also wanted to ask you if it would be possible to share some of your videos with a group that I had created called Pawpaw Chronicles.

PA golden is #1 unless otherwise stated in the commercial trade. All PA goldens sold are number 1 unless stated to be one of the other three. I have all four strains of PA golden growing. You can find PA #3 for sale at one nursery online, otherwise you have to buy the scion wood for getting these variety's. They were discovered/created in NY from Pennsylvania seed. PA is good flavor but if over ripe turns watery.

Which nursery are you referring to for #3? I believe I have it but I am curious which you are referring to. Thanks!

Another great video! I wanted to ask you if you have found wabash to have weak crotch angles? Last year at ksu pawpaw day they said that they had winds that damaged their wabash trees because of it. I really like wabash but I’m not growing it yet.

Wish I could grow these in California. It’s just too hot and low humidity keeps them struggling endlessly. Thankfully I got plenty of citrus avocados and mangoes trees to keep me busy

There are a few varieties that have adapted to parts of the west. You might want to look into Ford Amend and Rebecca's Gold.

How do these mid-season varieties perform for you in MA? Is it down to luck and not catching a late frost? Is the flavor still good?

Flavor is still good -- most of them make it. The only ones I have found iffy (and I'm in metrowest; Framingham/Marlborough area) are Tropical Treat and Sunflower. The other mid and even late season ones seem to ripen up most years

@@abyssquick have you try to use greenhouse plastic to wrap around the plant for the late season pawpaw so they can ripe faster? 3MM is readily available in lowes or home depot
