    This video made my day over three years after it was originally posted. This is literally the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you so much. As was the case with many other commentators, my monitoring switch was the culprit. Cleaning up the switch with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol revived the stuck clicker/button and voila. Thanks again for such a clear walk through.

Your excellent video clearly described the problem diagnosis and how to fix it. I was actually looking up a new switch, and was playing with the old one, pressing the button and it starting clicking! You da man Sam - thank you! My GE JVM3160RF2SS had a bad middle door switch and kept tripping the 20A breaker. The limit switch part looks like it tests for continuity OK, but if the plunger is wiggled ever so slightly, (without pressing it in until it clicks) the circuit opens. Got a KW3A micro switch online (same 16A@125/250V rating) for $8.00. Tip to others: With this GE oven, you can leave the oven in place for this repair. To remove the control panel, first remove the plastic header part above the oven cavity (behind the door, 2 screws). The control panel should slide up and out. Thank you again Sam. You saved me the money and the aggravation of getting a new micro that may not match the other appliances.

    Great video! Let me add this short step that may save people from having to open up the microwave. Although the reasons for Microwave blowing the main electrical panel circuit breaker vary, it is good to see if you have similar symptoms. I have added my microwave symptom and solution. You may have a similar issue or not, but it is always good to diagnose the simplest with a bit of common sense logic, information and caution. Symptom: Microvave would blow a circuit breaker (20A) at the main Electrical Pannel on premature opening of microwave door while cooking. Then it would simply blow the circuit breaker on press of start. Solution: 1)Unplug Microwave Completely from AC outlet 2)Open Door and use a flashlight to see the inside of the door switches, the openings where the door latches on to. 3)Press the switch (s) (the little approx. 1/8"x3/16" black square pads that stick out) with a small wood dowel to unlock it. If it was stuck you will hear a click when it unsticks or unlocks. 4) Plug the Microwave back to the AC outlet. 5) Reset the circuit breaker ( or check that it is reset) 6) Start your microwave as normal. If it works then this was the issue of not, then revisit your microwave symptoms and look for other similar symptoms and solutions. Things NOT TO DO DO NOT: open the microwave prematurely, use the STOP button or simply let it finish the heat cycle. Further Preventive Maintenance: Clean your microwave from grease , at least from the exterior, often. Because deep cleaning a microwave (switches in particular) requires going into the inside where electronics are exposed and because we are dealing with High Voltage components that may be live, still, even when the microwave is disconnected, such as HV capacitors, I recommend you DO NOT do this yourself but have someone trained in electronics or microwave servicing do it for you. LOGIC: Microwave doors (opening and closing) are constantly under stress, due to constant opening /closing and because of this constant use, the mechanical switches may get worn out or get stuck. Grease from cooking will get switches stuck. In my particular case I think it was a combination of premature opening the door but mainly and possible grease and grime that got the lower switch stuck. If the above seems like what you are experiencing , then these steps most likely may help you. BE SMART! STAY INFORMED AND SAFE!

    A year ago I fixed our Frigidaire Gallery by installing new microswitches. It worked for a time, but then starting failing again. I now believe that the fundamental issue with this oven is the door design. Briefly, because the door is opened by physically pulling the door open, here is a downward component of force when the door is opened because it's an above-range design. Or we may get into a bad habit of leaning a bit on the door. Over time and use, this causes the hinge to bend slightly which pulls the door out of alignment at the latch end. I talked to an appliance repair guy who said that there are only three factories worldwide who make these microwave ovens, they are competing simply on price, causing a race to the bottom in design and materials, and basically they are all junk. So I purchased another design where the door is actuated with a spring-loaded button rather than opened physically by hand. We will see how durable this design is.

  • @cbudde

    @cbudde

    9 ай бұрын

    @@dynadan1 Hi Dan, with much grumbling I gave up on the Frigidaire Gallery and bought a new Maytag microwave oven with a spring-actuated door release. So far it works fine, with two caveats. It's a bit larger in the vertical dimension so that the space between the top of the range and the bottom of the microwave oven is a little smaller; for us this turned out to be not a big deal (our largest pot for making soup / chili / pasta sauce fits, so all is well). Also, my wife was annoyed that the light underneath the microwave which illuminates the range top was more dim than with the Frigidaire. I replaced the incandescent bulb that comes with the Maytag with an LED replacement which helped a little. We are now accustomed to the light intensity. As I said in my post, I think the issue with the Frigidaire is that over time the door hinge gets bent such that the latch end does not line up and the microswitches don't engage the plastic do-dads in the door latch. I did not have success in bending the hinge to ensure a good latch. Good luck!

I dont know how you were able to hold the camera, and keep both leads of the multimeter on the switch, and then also actuate the switch - that was impressive. The other thing that I wonder about - why the failure mode of this particular problem involves a tripped breaker...? I could see a malfunctioning switch causing error codes, or just a seemingly dead appliance, but the 20A breaker tripping is kind of 'yikes!' for a switch failure...

    Your video was precise and articulate. My microwave was tripping the breaker and I didn't know what to do. Via your post I was able to analyze it properly. (it was the monitoring switch!) Ordered the switch online, had it 24 hours later and 20 minutes later I completed the install and everything is working great! The hardest part was getting the plastic vent cover off and the control panel off...I hate plastic, it always seems like it is going to break. THANK YOU for a fantastic video.

    Thank you Sam! Great video and excellent breakdown of trouble shooting of a fuse that kept blowing. My problem ended up being the secondary safety switch, the switch was fine but the plastic tab supposed to hold it in place was letting the switch slip out of the holder and not allow the switch to engage. Again much thanks!

    Thank you sooo much for posting this! I have a similar model (Gallery version) and was having this issue. My switch was just stuck (probably from me opening the door mid-cycle, lol.) Unstuck it and started putting it back together then realised I didn't pay attention to which way the black/white wire harness went and your video helped me once again! I could see how it went at 9:59! You are a lifesaver!

    Your video was extremely helpful. My Frigidaire Microwave, Model FGMV176NTFC, started tripping the breaker about a month ago and finally failed yesterday. I purchased my first multimeter today on Amazon and now trying to find the correct switch for this model. I have a feeling it's going to be the monitoring switch, but will not be able to determine for sure until I get the multimeter to check the continuity. This microwave came with our DR Horton home, so you know it's not the best on the market. We purchased the home in September of 2019. Wish me luck and thanks again for all your help.

Saved $300 and a month wait for a new microwave; but most important the headache of not having to remove the unit from under the cabinet, past the pot fill and not breaking the glass range top. God Bless You!

    So there is just one thing and I'm probably correct to assume I should have a continuity reading, but you never test the "hood thermostat" on the video. My microwave went out yesterday and I've been checking it. The hood thermostat is the only thing not coming back with a reading. I'd assume that's my issue? I didnt know if it was a door closed/open type of thing, I assume not but before I start buying things a confirmation would be sweet. Thanks!

  • @davidsullivan7867
    @davidsullivan78676 ай бұрын

    All my door switches tested good with a multi meter. Your testing of the bottom left thermostat yielded continuity. Mine did not have continuity so I assumed it was bad. While buying a new one, the specs stated that it was a normally "open" switch at room temperature. So I had no continuity at room temp as per design. Applied enough heat for the t-stat to close and produce audible continuity. So my bottom left t-stat wasn't bad. Now the thermostat on the right is the cycling thermostat, which helps maintain the interior temp like any oven or dryer. The initial test yielded continuity, but when heat was applied it never cycled or closed. That's the one I'm replacing.
