MicroVert 40M antenna - home made

Ғылым және технология

MicroVert antenna was developed by Jürgen Schäfer, DL7PE.
It's a small vertical for 100W. It's a short, base loaded antenna that uses the coax shield as a counterpoise.
Of course, this antenna is probably not the right choice for the DX-Hunter, but a very cheap, small and easy to build antenna and ideal for travelling and portable operation.

    The construction actually looks a lot like a spray can, or beer can antenna. I built one myself and did not expect it to work at all, just to see it far surpassed a way more expensive commercially made vertical antenna on the 40m band. I used a 5l beer can for the build.

    Hi Paul. I am wondering if i could use this type of Antenna for my Really restricted Space. I can only mount a Vertical on my Balkony. The Hight of the Balkony is 18m over Ground so the Vertical can be 22m over Ground and in this Hight it is 1m over the Flat Roof of the House. If i go with a 7m Fiberglass Fishing Pole with a 6,5m long 1.5mm Wire and the Coil on the Bottom, could this Work ? Can i use the Metal of the Balkony as a Radial ? The Coax Radial will be only 5m outside the Building or i lay it down on the Balkony. I cant do it anywhere else. The Metal of the Balkony is solid Ground.

    Good afternoon, my name is Juan Carlos and I am writing to you from Santiago de Chile, I begin by thanking you for your contribution, I just saw your video and how you made the antenna, it was several years ago but I think it is ideal for me, just one question, I could see on the calculation page that I could make it longer and if the theory does not fail me, being longer than the one you manufactured would be better since it would have a longer radiant and therefore better transmission. Am I right? Many greetingss and a big hug.

    Hello there, I've just finished and tested the antenna. It's quite simple and cheap to do. But I think it's an antenna for "no way" situations or limited (or emergency) field operations. There's no comparison even to a simple Ribakov antenna that I currently use and runs (matched) from 80 to 6 meters. Anyway it's a good suggestion and a useful exercise. 73

    The antenna was made with "on hand" stuff (i.e. PVC pipe 25mm, aluminum 20 and 16mm for tuning). The RF choke was made on a 150mm ferrite rod. The radiation pattern seems to be a little bit flat, ideal for very short loops. Signals are too weak, generally 15-20db (or maybe more) lower than my vertical antenna. Anyway, some modification on the radiator lenght Is now in my mind. Bye

    Thank you Paul. I have another question that comes up in mind mind. When looking at the antenna design link you can see a capacitance value along with the inductance coil which together they resonate at the assigned frequency. I am wondering where the capacitance value is coming from. I know you are not adding a capacitor to resonate, is it the capacitance of the aluminum tubes used; length/diameter/thickness', etc...? Hello Paul, Watching your video, I've decided to build one by myself. I've used 1.05m long 18mm in diameter aluminum pipe, 50mm diameter PVC pipe on which I've coiled 29 turns of 1.1mm enameled copper wire. Coax cable length is 8.2m. Balun is made of 2 stacked toroids (small ones, 43 mix) with 7+6 turns of RG174. All calculations have been done using Micro Vert online calculator. ISSUE: 1) I can't lower SWR below 2.5 2) Very narrow bandwidth, 30 kHz (more less as I was expecting) Do you maybe have some advice how to improve performances? Regards, 73 de YU4OWL

  • @OM0ET

    @OM0ET

    Hello Vaso, here 3:31 you can see the diagram of my construction. I used 2 sections of aluminium tubes 1095mm + 1202mm long + 376mm long fiberglass tube with coil. Total lenght of antenna is max. 2403mm. The coil has 69 turns of 1mm wire. Radial lenght is 8,11m of RG58 coax with balun made of RG174. Antenna is very sensitive on radial location. Try to place radial to another position and check SWR again. Also check if has your antenna the same lenght. I had a lot shorten of this lenght until I have got optimal resonance. Now it's about 1,6m long I think, not sure, but it depends on antenna location. Don't know now what AL tubes diameter was used because antenna is still on the roof :-) and working great. 73 Paul

I had a coax coil to block RF common current mode, 1/4L of open coax (thread not connected in the centre of the physical dipole) extended with 1/4L of wire. It looks like this o======--------- On the other hand 9:1 balun are not suited for a resonant dipole, your must use a resonant tuned circuit (auto transformer + parallel capacitor) as the wire impedance is about 4.5kOhm. THis is not a just MICRO Vertical antenna. It consist per scheme of 2 parts: First one: is 2.5 Aluminimum tube and a second one part is 8.1m of COAX and to be more exact outer braid of coax. So if put this antenna vertically it should ~11m tall. WIth same success we may just put it horizontally at the height of 0.15Lambda of working frequency above the ground and using simple RF inidicator (10-20 turns of wire on ferrite braid, HF diode + MV meter) and moving along the 8.1m part you will see different current spikes. in such scenario it would behaves as assymetric dipole. So in reality in this antenna 8.11m coax barid is main part of RF emission . It is not my idea but DL2KQ wrote about this antenna in his book part of Myth Anetnnas (Myth here is that on;y 2.5m Vertical is antenna ). I only added the way to check the statement and offered the way to work this thing efficeintly by bring it as 11m tall antenna. Have luck with this .
