This is a demonstration video showing the suturing of a corn kernel with tiny suture needles called 12-0 using a prototype of microsurgery assistance robot. Sony, driven by the desire to make advanced surgeries more accessible to both those performing treatment and those in need of treatment, is advancing research and development of surgical assistance robot technology.

I had the opportunity to 'play' with a De Vinci surgical robot ages ago. The head-set was on the 3rd floor, the operating room on the 5th floor. There was no lag that I could see, the view through the googles was quite clear. What impressed me most was the 'shake filter'...tiny tremors in the operators hands were filtered out by the system. I managed to tie some over-hand knots and use scissors to cut the sutures. It was EXHAUSTING! Not physically hard, but you had to plan every move before hand. There is force-feedback, but no real 'sense of touch'.

I'd love to be a surgeon. Unfortunately I was born poor. I'm an engineer now but it took a f**k tonne of work to climb out of poverty. Unfortunately being a second generation immigrant and having a dad who passed away leaving my mom with a 2 year old me and 10 week old sister alone didn't make life easy. This technology has potential to improve the lives of so many people, maybe if this was around in the 90's my dad would still be here and I'd be a surgeon.
