Microsoft Saved Apple - The Biggest Myth in Tech History
Ғылым және технология
I'm sure we've all heard it at least once: "Microsoft saved Apple from Bankruptcy in 1997." It refers to an investment Microsoft made in Apple that was announced at Macworld 1997, not long after Steve Jobs returned to the company. But this depiction of events has been heavily mythologized over the years. The truth is, even though Apple was going bankrupt, they didn't need Microsoft's help to stay around. And today's video explains why!

@@MichaelMJD So given that today all of windows, Mac and android devices are shipped with their makers' own default web browsers, I take it that the US govt has given up on enforcing anti monopolistic behaviors in such a thing? Or is it because there was a major shift in the perception for bundling web browsers into OS?
I knew that the anti-trust lawsuit had nothing to do with Apple, and I vaguely remembered some kind of lawsuit between Microsoft and Apple involving piracy. Thank you for clarifying it Michael. 😁👍

Yup. This is how it went down. Video for Windows was a joke, then allofasudden it got usable... hmm. Apple was a jumbled mess of different technologies and initiatives that Jobs had to wrangle, but they DID have some pretty exciting tech stashed away in different corners. And Quicktime was a jewel in the crown. Quicktime definitely helped save Apple for numerous reasons.

Well said. I was living right in the middle of this whole ordeal with Apple and Microsoft’s Antitrust investigation. I was working as a beta tester for Stac Electronics at the time. This was another company Microsoft attempted to shaft by stealing their patented disk doubling technology from as well as squeezing Netscape right out of the browser market. Netscape, of whom I also did work for, was a highly successful internet browser company of which Microsoft completely miscalculated as they totally overlooked the internet’s significance at the time.. Microsoft had to do something quick which meant pushing their Internet Explorer Software on OEM’s and bundling their browser into Windows for free in order to kill Netscape’s $39.99 software charge. Microsoft was a big behemoth and a bully so I was glad the DoJ stepped in and scared Microsoft straight (to an extent). It amazes me that people born after the fact think they know more about what was going on during this time period when I lived and worked right in the middle of it all. Your story is the most factual, in-depth and to the point I have read concerning what actually happened. You certainly did your homework and I commend you for your thoroughness and unbiased reporting.

Michael this video is spot on, but Steve always spun it like MS saved Apple, so he could increase the company's street cred in the industry. When Time magazine reported on the deal, Steve was on the cover next to the caption, "Bill, Thank you. The world's a better place." They did accurately report that Apple was still in trouble, and they would have to pivot. Fortunately, Steve cut the product line and introduced the iMac and the PowerBook G3.

never even knew of these events at all, but I can really just 100% tell that you know what you're talking about. excellent video.
Awesome video. The Jobs statement about being 90 days from bankruptcy might be somewhat hyperbolic, but from accounts I've read there was a point where Gil Amelio really was racing the clock to complete a round of bond sale (debentures) before Apple ran out of cash on hand and would have been forced to file for bankruptcy. They got a bit of a break when sales picked up but it was still a close run thing. The timescale for the sale was extremely compressed to the point Amelio couldn't do the normal sales pitch trips and had to do it in one bit conference call to investors

Ok, we can all agree the video was cool and educational. But what was even more cooler was the outro.
Another tech myth you should do a video about is the iOS 7 controversy. Many people believe that Steve Jobs’s departure is what causes the design to change. However, the iOS/MacOS designer, Scott Forstall, was fired for not signing the apology letter that Apple gave after Apple Maps released (and was buggy.). The designer was replaced by Johnny I’ve, who preferred the flat design.
This is all correct. I'm the furthest thing from an Apple fan, but what saved them was Steve Jobs and his leadership, as well as the first totally new product Apple developed under Jobs: the iPod. Apple wouldn't be what they are today without that thing.
Very well researched & very well explained, well done Michael....a very high information quality standard as always

Michael: I started watching some of your videos a few days ago and now I'm bingeing on them. Regarding this one, in particular, you have untangled a knotted ball of yarn regarding the interplay among the antitrust suit, the patent disputes and the money and settlement issues with all the litigation. Clarity and demystification were exactly what these entire affairs needed and I thank you for it.
As a young kid when these events happened, I was a bit of an Apple fanboy at the time when Steve Jobs came back. While it’s true that Microsoft in no way single-handedly saved Apple, it’s also true that the $150 million investment and commitment to Mac Office was enough to remove the title “beleaguered” from Apple in most of the trade and business publications of the time. If you didn’t support Office in the late 90s, you weren’t getting into the workplace plain and simple back then, and this nod of support was enough to at least stabilize the rapidly declining Mac sales. Even MacWorld at the time was celebrating this as the salvation of the company.
Very well made documentary. Very informative and good way of crafting it all. Nice credits btw, real cool work to match it up.

You've really helped me personally understand the background behind the $150M investment. Thank you, Michael! One last question, though: if Video for Windows initially made use of QuickTime's proprietary technology in order to become relevant, and this code was eventually removed in version 1.1e, do you know what Microsoft/Intel replaced it with? Did they invent their own alternative solution or did they license the code properly from Apple? Or did they do something else entirely?
Excellent video, explained the situation way better than any other video I have ever seen. Nice job!!
Honestly, I think part of the problem is how that entire presentation with Steve Jobs went down. Microsoft being put front and center with a big focus on the money, browser, and Bill Gates even being streamed in for a brief segment was, from an optics perspective, very much this picture of Apple trying to appease/borrow from Microsoft. The rest of it is just people making false connections based on other events that happened at the time.

Another term of that settlement was that Microsoft had to.ensure that they didn't close there MBU division and continued development of Office: Mac and Internet Explorer: Mac for at least 5 years. Incidentally, I just installed windows95 on an enulated 486 with PcEm, and remembered yet other side of the IE scandal (this happened to me back in the day too in real hardware). Had Win95 running snappy and fine, and then there was the forced ie4 update trying to install visual studio 6 (later win95 forced the ie4 update too, but you can skip it by restarting the computer when the installer pops in). That changed the look and feel of the file manager, desktop, etc. and made the computer SLOOOW Boot up doubled and clicking on items in the start menu would take seconds to react.. Added lots of bloat at startup too. Luckily in win95 it is still possible to remove ie4 and make the computer useable again, but imagine how many people didn't had the skills, or Internet to look up a fix for this. Win98 had active desktop and ie integrated into the system without being able to remove it, so low end computers where a no go for win98.

As a note. The 90s where a time where computers where slow and expensive, so you tried to make them last as much as possible (they costed like a car, and where outdated by next year!). The thing is that most software tried to force bloatware into the system. So even if you got a high spec computer it'll quickly became sluggish and unusable. Reinstalls where common if you used Windows.
i thought mjd had given in to clickbaiting but no, this was a well researched video essay and im glad i don't have this misconception anymore. thanks Michael!

I mean, bad decisions given a few more years would have made Apple disappear. But we all should agree no browser back then should have needed to be paid for as time went on more and more things would have required a browser for certain tasks as time went on and over the years kinda thing, so I think despite Microsofts business practice of monopolizing, they were on to what would be browser choice as most browsers should have been free as well as having a default built in browser to either use or to choose a more preferred browser of your choosing.
this deserves more views
I think Microsoft's software on the "Finder" Mac, saved the Mac. Tell me Mac Write and Mac Draw didn't matter.
Thank you for the reference list
I was always under the impression that M/S helped Apple but the iMac was what brought Apple back to the front line.
OMG! I can't tell you how much I loved this video. I would like it twice if I could. The amount of deep reasearch you have done here is absolutely amazing. This video is not only entertaining, but it's also historically important. Thank you very much!!!
