So glad to hear you reiterating that one should provision a new, smaller disk and transferring data as the recommended way of "disk shrinking" in Azure, as this is the ONLY supported method of doing so.

I was literally looking into managing Azure VM disks yesterday for the AZ-800. I'm guessing Live resizing isn't going to be on the exam, but that was some info on resizing the managed disks that I hadn't seen before. This is perfect timing, thank you sir

Love your channel! Overdue feature that I am eagerly awaiting to get out of preview. I find it interesting on the Microsoft's preview page it says "Disks smaller than 4 TiB can't be expanded to 4 TiB or larger without downtime" You show that you were able to live resize to 4 TiB so appears the Microsoft page wording needs to be updated.

Right you can't go PAST 4TiB

If you want to avoid the doubling of size then a disk pool is a different option. That also allows for live resizing. A bit more complicated but you can add any size disk to the pool. Live. This is done automatically for you on sql VMs. Do be aware of maximum number of disks.

I mentioned this in the video as another option based on circumstance, just add disks that could then be removed.

Hi John, the documentation in Azure has changed for Linux vm, I think that now the resizing of the partitions is automatic.

Around 6m40s, you said you pay for the provisioned size of the disk. Is this not only with Premium/Ultra SKUs? That is, for standard hdd/ssd, is it not thin provisioned so that you only pay for what you use? Or is such thin provisioning only with Std SKU blob/file storage?

managed disks are all provisioned size price even standard. You are thinking of unmanaged standard storage and yes various other types of storage.

I don't know if it would be useful, but I found a script to shrink the virtual disk. With too much fear, I tried out and it worked perfectly. In the scenario I had, I shrinked a disk from 127GB to 32GB. I had to change some variables in order to attend to my scenario. It took a little bit long but in the end, it worked. if anyone wants it, I can share.
