Microscopic Pacman

Ғылым және технология

An experiment using micro scenography and film lighting to film the behaviour of single celled organisms. Feel free to play your own music over the images. And remember, the maze is just 1mm wide!

Thanks for all the comments and interest. You guys have pretty much answered all the questions posed. I can confirm that the maze really is 1mm wide. You can verify this yourself by looking up 'Euglena', the long green organisms. See how big they are supposed to be, and you can work out how big the maze is in relation to them. Holding the maze up to the naked eye, you can just about see that it has detail inside, but that's it. Bacteria are another magnitude smaller, so not really visible here. You can just about make out their movements in the closeups on the green section, but its pretty mushed out by the KZread compression. We'll keep you posted as the project develops. Adam

+BrainShadow I was talking about our rights as people to control tiny organisms in a pac-man maze in a manner meant to parody the "cruelty" comments on just about every nature/animal video. I tried to make it as obvious as possible that it was a piss take. And this is why Kappa should be added to emoji. In a world full of written communication it helps to have a clear indicator for sarcasm.

Many protists look about that size with a 40x lens (the max for a lot of microscopes), and a few single-celled organisms grow to 1 inch or more (such as Acetabularia), so this is pretty believable

***** Depending on the size of a bacterium’s genome, these tiny organisms have the ability to sense hundreds to thousands of internal and external signals like carbon sources, nitrogen sources, and pH changes. If these bacteria are motile (able to move around), they can compare how conditions are for them now against how they were a few seconds ago. That’s right, bacteria have a memory albeit short. source: www.frontiersin.org/blog/How_Do_Bacteria_Make_Decisions_/625

good question! We did film a sequence for 256, in a maze where the system was stagnating and bacteria were taking over, but I was never happy with, it just wasn't crazy enough to measure up to level 256. On reflection I might revisit the footage and upload something as there are some nice parallels with Pacmans and the protozoans reality breaking down.
