Micro-vortex by a Cell
Ғылым және технология
Hey hey! I prepared a simple demonstration for you today. This blue cutie is a single-celled organism called Stentor coeruleus. It's quite a beautiful creature and one of my favorite things to watch under the microscope. Nope not after sperm so stop asking. 🙄😂
.
Stentors are part of a highly advanced single-celled group called "ciliates". The name comes from the hair-like structures called "cilia" which cover the cells fully or sometimes partially.
.
This Stentor's cell is covered with these tiny cilia. Cilia are used for locomotion and feeding. Beating of these thousands of tiny cilia propels the cell in the water also the beating brings the food particles into Stentor's mouth by creating a vortex. 🌪️
.
So I used one of my homegrown algae cultures to visualize it for you. Those tiny green bits are all algae. I cultured these algae at home and they came from blueberries I bought from the supermarket 😂. I washed the blueberries with a bit of water, ate the berries 😋 and added some liquid plant fertilizer (which I bought from the same supermarket 😂) in that water and after couple of months on my windowsill water turned to bright green and there were there! They are incredibly small but extremely beautiful and I thought I can add couple of drops of those algae into a slide with some Stentors to make the feeding vortex much more visible.
.
Can you see the current? The vortex? Isn't it amazing that this tiny cell has an ability to feed itself like this? It can pull the food particles and even some other cells into its mouth and eat them just like I ate the blueberries.
.
Nom nom nom. 😋
Thank you for watching and reading!
Nom nom nom 🤤

your love for cells makes me so happy, I know almost nothing about single celled organisms but your enthusiasm in the description is so infectious. you go lil stentor, eat that algae
It looks like a magnetic field 😲

You don't get nearly enough likes and recognition for your videos! These are so precious, and informative. Keep up the amazing work!
Your video descriptions are THE best
Thank you for the fun explanation!
I love this channel it is so meditative.
It's so beautiful!
Brilliant!
Just found your channel. I'm in my second year of microbiology rn and I love your content
Gracias muy buen trabajo
This is just so incredibly beautiful to watch. :)
I just discovered this channel. Great content, I have to say!
Amazing!!
I love your video dude, reallly reallyyy mezmerising
Gran canal
It would be cool to see a slo-mo of the cilia.
He looks like a tiny green turnip.
Lol it's like that cell has its own gravitational field
Hi im also getting into microbiology and just wanted to know what microscope you are using.
What camera do you use? Do you add extra lighting for the microscope?
Algae from blueberries???
What is your setup? I’m OMAX, 18 MP camera with toupview software. But I can’t figure out how to prevent it from encoding my videos
Which microscope did you use for this?
What microscope and camera do you use?
Stationary filter feeding???
How does the algea get in? It's kind of just floating around it?

Stentor the last -air- waterbender
I take that it is in nom nom nom nom mode?
Visits incomming
You should try 360°
So you’re saying you eat blueberries by sucking them up in a vortex?
Life under low reynolds :)
Una sugerencia mia seria poner subtitulos en español tambien
I want to see inside that cell.

We evolved from single cell organisms and everyday we make advancements in technology that is evolving. someday, at this rate, it will become more advanced than human beings rendering biological organisms obsolete.
I like your channel, but you should really add music to the vids
