MICKEY GILLEY - 10 GREATEST HITS & #1 SONGS (1974-1982)

Музыка

Country singer and actor Mickey Gilley, known for launching the Urban Cowboy movement in Country music and hit songs including "Stand By Me," "Room Full of Roses" and "Lonely Nights," died Saturday in Branson, Missouri.
Gilley was 86 and had just come off of the road, his favorite place, having played ten shows in April. He passed peacefully with his family and close friends by his side.
Gilley, a native of Natchez, Mississippi, influenced generations of country singers for decades with his signature, haunting combination of Louisiana rhythm and blues and country-pop crossover melodies. He grew up with his two famous cousins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, surrounded by the influence of music and earned 39 Top 10 hits and 17 No. 1 songs throughout his career.
In 1971, Gilley opened his world-famous honky-tonk Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas, which sparked a chain of the famous nightclubs.
The son of Arthur Fillmore Gilley and Irene (Lewis) Gilley, Gilley learned how to play piano from Lewis and dabbled in boogie-woogie and gospel music early in his career before finding his professional footing in the '70s with "Room Full of Roses." Hits "Chains of Love," "Honky Tonk Memories," "She's Pulling Me Back Again," and "Here Comes the Hurt Again" followed as his honky-tonk gave way to the more progressive countrypolitan.
In 1980, Gilley splashed into pop culture when he appeared in the smash hit movie "Urban Cowboy" alongside John Travolta, Debra Winger and Johnny Lee. Gilley's served as the backdrop for the film, which helped launch his acting career and put his music career on a whole new level. Gilley went on to star in popular television series including "Murder She Wrote," "The Fall Guy," "Fantasy Island" and "Dukes of Hazzard."
Gilley was widely recognized for his work in music and movies, earning numerous accolades, including six Academy of Country Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011. He was one of only a handful of artists to receive the Academy of Country Music's Triple Crown Awards.
Gilley was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian. He is survived by his wife Cindy Loeb Gilley, his children Kathy, Michael, Gregory and Keith Ray, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and his cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart.

I went to Gilley's once for a George Jones concert. I got there quite early and ordered lunch. It was a huge place. Later the ticket crews came to set up tables. I tried three times to buy a ticket and was turned down. I was in the building already so I saw the show for free!

Yeah, if he just chose to be a good person and follow Jesus and His teachings, but not be "saved" according to what Man told some what God was about, God would be happy to allow the devil to torture him for all eternity. Damn, what a great guy God is! (Except God isn't really like what you think he is, God would never allow a good person to be tortured for all eternity) I'm so sorry you are so bound by man's lies that you allow yourself to be tortured by Man's version of God instead of living with and for Him. But I'm sure you do follow Jesus and live for God, despite your beliefs that man has put into you about some craziness about Him.

My father and I owned the Shell station close to Gilly's club. He and his family traded with us. A little history, he began working construction. On one occasion, Jerry Lee was performing in Houston and with Mickey being his cousin, he picked him up when he arrived. Mickey said he saw a was of cash Jerry Lee had and asked where he got that much cash. "Making music" Jerry replies. It was then Mickey decided to try making music. He was playing nights and weekends while still doing construction. Pushing the limits, he showed up at work late one morning and the foreman fired him. Mickey just said, "Good, now I can just make music." While Mickey's name was on the club, it did not belong to him. The man that recognized Mickey's talent was named Sherwood Cryer. Seeing the potential in Mickey, he signed him under a long-term contract. Mickey realized later that Sherwood had taken advantage of his youth and inexperience and began to resent it. As soon as the contract ended Mickey left Sherwood and the club was closed. Funniest thing that happened occured when Urban Cowboy was being filmed. One day, a limo pulled into our station and Mickey got out. He saw my dad and I standing there and he called out to my dad. " Hey Glenn, I have someone for you to meet." As my dad was walking his way, the back window on the limo was rolling down. When my dad asked who, Mickey said, "John Travolta," to which my dad replied, " I couldn't care less about John Travolta!" Immediately the window started back up. Mickey was just an ordinary guy and a great entertainer

Have you folks noticed that all 3 cousins pedal with the left foot instead of the right!;-)? Maybe it's because back in the day when singing and playing you had a microphone on a stand on the inside of your right leg? Can't think of any other reason why they would do it this way. Thoughts?

We had a phrase in Texas for "waking up with a number 1", Coyote Ugly. Its ugly enough that you wake up, shes sleeping on your arm, & you chew it off to get out of there like a coyote from a fur trap. A girl called me Coyote Ugly one time when she was drunk. I still thinks it funny because she had to be drunk to tell me the truth.
