Mick is so good because he completely embodies Chicago. He brings a colorful jazz influenced production and is very musical like Chicago. But, like Chicago, there are dark undertones. Chicago has jazz and is a beautiful city but is also plagued with violence and you can hear that in his music. This is such a great project.
To be completely honest. The waters preety much shits on acid rap. Just saying

WATER helps life grow.... Mick is a rare gem! You can feel the vibe just by looking at the cover, smooth flow alot better then a lot of this trash music being swallowed up right now. Please stop sleeping on dude. For LL Cool J to say this album has "No bounce" was ridiculous I almost cut the vid off for that crazy line you dropped! Thank god I stayed to hear MykeCtown and FeeFo was on point to thanks for actually listening to the tape. This is hip hop, listen and let The Water[s] cleanse you. #TheWaters #FreeNation

FACTS, Comfortable is the JAM
Mick is a genius man. There is also more to his mixtape. Everyone is talking about codeine, purple drink or what ever. And mick talks about water. Extremely clever yo
The concept of water, and the way it can be interpreted is crazy throughout the mixtape. It’s awesome how all the track names intertwine and the tape flows like water from front to back.
These guys don't do enough research on these songs. Read the lyrics man, you don't need to use rap genius either. Just think about it for yourself. The people that praised it praised it blindly and too much, and the dude that bashed it obviously didn't think about it too much. Probably listened once or twice and dropped it. This is definitely something that requires multiple listens to get the feeling of. I loved it.I love martyrs, and I love how he's putting a lot of messages out there without standing on his high horse and preaching. I didn't really like THC or comfortable, but the rest of this mixtape brought something good on every track. The music video for Jazz helps you understand it a lot better, Mick is out here trying to give y'all the water (truth, goodness, wisdom) for free while these other dudes are talking all this Jazz, taking your money, trying to sell people THEIR truth and take advantage of people, make a business of it, while Mick just wants everyone to be more enlightened. Probably part of the reason why this is a free mixtape. But I think the water is a good metaphor that deserves to be continued thought the project, and I think he spits some crazy complex bars along with some stuff that just makes you go "damn!" Without having to analyze. "I still felt like a saint when I drew that Brees… since boy meets world it's be(e)n savage." Like the one dude said it's got some songs that bang in the whip like Who else, 514, the water(s), Jerome. But nothing sacrifices the creativity or abstract thought to sound dope. Best of both worlds. Just really, really like this project lol.
"All these little girls give it up now, Shame I can see the cherry stem in the fucking streets" @Myke I can't believe you didn't mention that line
@Randhawa241
8 жыл бұрын
That line is insane.
@shaanraval5374
2 жыл бұрын
I only listened to the record once so far, last night in fact, and that line sort of glossed over my head. Reading it in comments of videos regarding the album makes me feel sad that I never noticed it in the context of the record. One line that stuck with me was “reach for the sky, there is more than the trees” or something along those lines.
What I loved most about this project, is the water influence. The beats sound like they're submerged in water, his lyrics relate to water and to me, it's on point. I love cohesive albums, like Kendricks GKMC, that was like a movie to me. To do something like these guys, it takes a genius.
Go back with Rap Genius open and listen a few more times. A lot of this can go over your head.

Shoutout Comfortable. Best Track, hands down. Noname is fire to Mick's water.
Glad you guys reviewed this. Enjoyed all the different perspectives and Mike pretty much had my exact thoughts about this tape. Did anyone else notice Kinge had that Bruce Leeroy glow going on?
Damn! Myke was on point. Got the exact felling of the project! Is not a easy thing to find a rapper that can make such catchy hooks and fit them so great on the tracks... and spiting that way, with those flows. Def support Mick Jenkins!
i checked this out because of yall. i really like this project alot. its deff in my top of the year list. thanks yall.

Herman Virk Nicolas wasn't saying that Acid Rap is on the radio. He was saying that it's a good album compared to the majority of radio artists, but that once you have things other than the radio to compare it to, it's not a crazy exceptional album.

Listening now, dope so far guys keep up the goof work, know that I appreciate the effort and time you cats put into this
Great review as always guys but not enough was said about the lyrical content. The overt metaphors of water representing spiritual elemental goodness was awesome. Very refreshing mixtape in an era of hip-hop where most of the content is cars, clothes, hoes, and champagne. The waters showed there's much more in life than materialism; and still had tight production, good flows, hard bars, and catchy hooks. Crazy wordplay and deep lyrical concepts.
Music is soo good from Chicago at the moment... Mick Jenkins, Alex Wiley, Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Calez, Kembe x, St.Millie, Leggit... Being the best :Q

I love the way Mick makes his concept projects, both "The Water[s] & Trees & Truths are dope projects.
Myke, if this album wasn't overhyped you wouldn't have heard about it or have been able to appreciate him.

Dope review....next on to the underachievers cellar door
this, hell can wait, faces, and BHP are some of my favorite mixtape/EPs to this day. 2014 was a great year
Mic Jenkins-Who Else is the epitome of "BUMPS IN THE WHIP" feefo would approve
Im glad SOMEONE mentioned the song Comfortable! I replayed Martyr a couple of times but I had Comfortable on repeat!! Great mixtape, great review
Dope review.....next, on to the underachievers cellar door
I love the beat switch up on Shipwrecked
I need you guys to review THC. His growth from this to the new album is outstanding. A well deserved listen.
I found Jerome was crazy. Mick came on it with a Joey flow which had me wondering what Badass was going to bring. Badass came in hard... reminded me of Meth a bit at the start and ended like a beast.
I've been a critic of Feefo probably because I genuinely like him. Feefo you got better at speaking. Mick Jenkins, I need a week or two, sound sweet. Thanks guys.
I love this tape and his first mixtape trees & truth!

nnnnice review :) i cant stop listening to dehydration, love that track Statik Selektahs #WHATGOESAROUND next maybe? :)
Great review, very balanced. Wish they explored the topic of "Waters" more, this is a great concept album, it deserved a thorough review on the concept. But still this was fair
S/o to y'all for reviewing this
We NEED that Mursday review!
Him and Isaiah are two of my favorite rappers right now.. Just relatable
Mick Jenkins previous project is dope as hell too: Trees and Truths.

Kiros Amhara You're an idiot if you think Underachievers are better than anybody in Beast Coast or T.D.E, Cellar Door is so forgettable. How can you say "says the dude who listens to these days." AND THEN say " I dont hate the album", That contradict your whole argument.
@mds8384
9 жыл бұрын
Kiros Amhara You dont realise that I understood The Underachievers were in beast coast? You must have got confused and thought I don't know what beast coast is, my statement doesn't say anything about UA not being in beast coast, it's just that they are the bottom of it. I agree these days did not live ANYTHING up to control system (one of my classics), but it's much better than cellar door, which is just boring. FBZ are original, juice meech and erick are brilliant together, pro era have some decent people, Joey (amazing), (RIP Steez). But Under achievers? Indigoism is amazing, but cellar door is boring.
Great album, very chill
I come from montreal and 514 is fucking doooope !
I thought this was another unique tape to come out of Chicago showcasing an extremely talented MC. I think he may be one of the best MCs coming up in the game right now, his wordplay was giving me a workout. I think he compares really well to artists such as Mos Def based on how he goes into each track conceptually so well, but I can also see the Isaiah comparison. I'd love to see where he goes next, not sure what major label but I'd maybe like to see him do a collaborative project with either an artist from Stones Throw or Rhymesayers. Perhaps maybe either Guilty Simpson or deM atlaS, or even Isaiah, thatd be dope lol
Myke Jenkins
This Album is AMAZING!
easily my favorite project of the year. i love every project Mick's put out so far, he's my favorite rapper right now. im easily his biggest stan lol. also it's pronounced John Doe, not Jean Doo lolol. and Noname Gypsy is the bae
I first heard Mick Jenkins a few days ago, he's dope. I really enjoyed this project, more than his previous one. You guys should review the new CES Cru album 'Codename: Ego Stripper'
please review travis scott - days before rodeo next ! and thanks for putting me on this dude mick jenkins he owned himself a new fan because of u guys big up keep up the great work guys #deehgang
this whole mixtape was fantastic. very unique in it's theme too- focusing on water aha. who knew centering an album around such a simple concept would create such a murky, deep, intoxicating sound. really enjoyed this

Well it's meant to be a metaphor, but I guess there will be people who take it litteraly (water).

It's a shame artists such as Qwel, Qwazaar 2/3 Mc's of Typical Cats. Robust, (Galapagos 4 roster) Rhymefest, Vakill, the Molemen collective and other great Chicago artists who are left field yet still b boy, aren't getting the shine they deserve. Rhymefest and Vakill get some shine, but nothing like the artists mention in comment section and review. Though I know Myke is into all these artists, if he mentioned many of them, most wouldn't know who they are. I understand it though.. It's all love at the end of the day.
Love Acid Rap and 10 Day and only gave this a chance because of what I heard on the song Crossroads by Mick, Chance, and Vic. Myke's opinion was pretty accurate on how I feel about the tape also.
Yep its in my top 5 hip hop albums/mixtapes this year so far... Its original, all the songs are consistent and addictive to listen to and a real lyricist. Drinkmorewater
What's funny is I got this mixtape from The DEHH blog like 17-18 (?) Days ago. Been playing it ever since. Kinda surprised you didn't know about it. :0 Anyway, the waters was straight up fire! :P And yeah A fan from India here. Keeping pointing people towards amazing hip hop and well amazing music in general. theneedledrop *****
The song Waters reminds me of Swimming Pools. A lot.
It took me a long time to listen to this but honestly It was well worth the wait, I love this album 🐆
Anyone else think he sounds just like Andre 3000 on the back part of the second verse on Drink More Water?
The Water[s] is one of the best mixtapes I have heard in a LONG time.
Saba - Comfort Zone, another dope chicago artist
Other than pushing the water thing a little much I think it's one of the top releases this year
My favorite track was The Martyrs, that beat just knocks but Also very chill. Which I could say the same with Canada Dry and Dehydration.
This is my favorite mixtape of the year right now
Any chance of reviewing Trees and Truth as well by Mick Jenkins?
UNDERACHIEVERS!

It reminded me a lot of Thirsty Fish. The water theme and the Chicago sound probably contributed. Really liked it though.
My favorite track was Jerome with Joey Badass
I know it's been a year since it was released, but I wish you guys would do a review on Denzel Curry - N64
Man Myke knows whats up, Comfortable was my best track on that tape
Yo wtf is the best in the background to this discussion man, I want that shit
Dehydrated, 514, and martyrs. Best tracks on the project imo
I’m with Myke, « Comfortable » is the gem here.
Kimge need to drink more water!!!
I listened to this project for the 1st yesterday and I thought it was a great project. In my top 5 this year. Are y'all gonna do the g-unit EP "The Beauty of Independence" ? That Animal Ambition review was hilarious. I'd like to hear y'all opinion on the EP. I think the EP so far is alright except the song "Changes" which was pretty good.
