I then played in BEDLAM with Dave Ball, Frank Aiello and Cozy Powell. Would DC have fitted UH? Don´t think so, as DC did not have the high register in his singing voice back then (i.e. like GH), imagine him sing July Morning. And also, there is something a little inaccurately here in what MB said: the band Whitesnake was put together in late 1977. And DCs audition for UH was in late 1976...

David had always high register . He just purposely not showiing after Ian gillan signature . But live , he had to scream with Ritchie Marshalls ! I think you never heard the chorus of Lay down , he s hitting high notes . On others songs such Lady double dealer . He just hit the notes in full uped voice open throat , gritt , low harmonics . Dio use a similar technique . It came from soul singers .. But its High ..the way they use that is deceiving . Try to get the right key note of the verse You 'll have surprise . Then i guess you never heard or remember David final on smoke on the water live , he hiit that fucking scream . Even in the danemark first show 1973 . In stormbringer tour , he did more . Before the reprise in stormbringer , After John solo , in burn here and there . In smoke of the water of course . Then the proto whitesnake style Come taste the band . What David did even on keys on that record is hard ... very hard and very high . Coming home , full uped voice . Lady luck , various with full upped voice and mixed voice high larynx but super warm .. Hey try to attack the second verse , Love child ... you think thats low? In the tour , the volume and adrenaline beign what it is . And uncontrolled glenn hughes taking all the space , David did almost sang a semi tone or 1 tone higher live . Something he will reproduce with the euphory live in 1984 towards 1991 . The screaming update . So in 1976 /1977 he had the high register further . And in the David coverdale's whitesnake album , he hit high stuff . Especially the last verse of title track . And in 1978 tours even before trouble release , he did scream high and quite very agressive ...but alterned ..

metalheadoldschol I heard every song you are referring to. not saying he didn’t have range. He did but not in the style of Gillans Child in Time or a lot of the Heep songs. I prefer Coverdale singing songs like Sail Away.

@@Nissardpertugiu David Coverdale never had a high register compared to Ian Gillan or Glenn Hughes, and it is the latter that you can hear on passages with a high voice, not Coverdale which has a low register. Anyway, he hasn't had a voice for a long time, unlike Glenn Hughes who has kept his range intact all these years.

Technically, Ritchie was seeking a Uriah Heep sound when he recruited Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale for the Deep Purple MkIII lineup. He liked the idea of adding a new dimension with multiple quality vocalists. Jon Lord occasionally contributed suttle backing vocals, but the band essentially relied on a single primary vocalist to that point. He originally asked Paul Rodgers from Free to be the frontman for Purple, and team him with bassist/vocalist Hughes, who unsurprisingly joined Purple under the condition that he was allowed to contribute as a second featured vocalist, as he was the lead singer for his previous band Trapeze. Anyhow, Rogers ultimately declined the offer after deciding to assemble a new band (Bad Company), so the band went back to the drawing board, considering an established rock singer (including Gary Pickford Hopkins of Tucky Buzzard). Ultimately, that plan didn't work, the band posted ads in magazines seeking a singer. They ended up auditioning a young man who had the necessary voice, on the strength of a demo tape he sent them, and that guy was Coverdale.

I don't know if I could see David being a good fit for Uriah Heep. Going from Deep Purple to them would've seemed like he was taking a step backwards in terms of musicianship. No disrespect to Mick Box, but let's face facts here. Ritchie Blackmore could play circles around him!

+Harold de Mure- I completely agree with you. Mick Box is one of the most wonderfully fluid lead guitarists still alive from the "Classic Rock" era, his touch is absolutely wonderful & to this day I am yet to hear a bad solo from him. Blackmore IS amazing, but its more his ego that would play circles 'round him. In fact, not only do they have mutual respect for each other, it would be wild to hear some two way guitar crosstalk between them!

Oh, I disagree that Coverdale didn't fit Purple. He was great for them, especially on "Burn"!! Excellent vocals and album itself! He even added a richness to "Stormbringer" (though generally, the songwriting wasn't quite at the high level of Burn). But I've never heard any DP fan say he wasn't good for the band. Until now.
