The co-founder of Field String Theory explains why the universe has 11 dimensions rather than any other number.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHIO KAKU:
Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, as well as New York University (NYU).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Question: Why are there only 11 dimensions in the universe rather than something higher? (Submitted by John Menon)
Michio Kaku: I work in something called String Theory, that’s what I do for a living. In fact, that’s my day job. I’m the co-founder of String Field Theory, one of the main branches of String Theory. The latest version of String Theory is called M-Theory, “M” for membrane. So we now realize that strings can coexist with membranes. So the subatomic particles we see in nature, the quartz, the electrons are nothing but musical notes on a tiny vibrating string.
What is physics? Physics is nothing but the laws of harmony that you can write on vibrating strings. What is chemistry? Chemistry is nothing but the melodies you can play on interacting vibrating strings. What is the universe? The universe is a symphony of vibrating strings. And then what is the mind of God that Albert Einstein eloquently wrote about for the last 30 years of his life? We now, for the first time in history have a candidate for the mind of God. It is, cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.
So first of all, we are nothing but melodies. We are nothing but cosmic music played out on vibrating strings and membranes. Obeying the laws of physics, which is nothing but the laws of harmony of vibrating strings. But why 11? It turns out that if you write a theory in 15, 17, 18 dimensions, the theory is unstable. It has what are called, anomalies. It has singularities. It turns out that mathematics alone prefers the universe being 11 dimensions.
Now some people have toyed with 12 dimensions. At Harvard University, for example, some of the physicists there have shown that a 12-dimensional theory actually looks very similar to an 11-dimensional theory except it has two times, double times rather than one single time parameter. Now, what would it be like to live in a universe with double time? Well, I remember a movie with David Niven. David Niven played a pilot, who was shot down over the Pacific, but the angels made a mistake, he was not supposed to die that day. And so the angels brought him back to life and said, “Oh, sorry about that. We killed you off by accident; you were not supposed to die today.”
So in a great scene, David Niven then walks through a city where time has stopped. Everyone looks like this. And there’s David Niven just wandering around looking at all these people. That’s a world with double time. David Niven has one clock, but everyone else has a separate clock and these two clocks are perpendicular to each other. So if there’s a double time universe, you could walk right into a room, see people frozen in time, while you beat to a different clock. That’s a double time universe.
Now this is called F-Theory, “F” for father, the father of strings. It’s not known whether F-Theory will survive or not; however, M-Theory in 11 dimension is the mother of all strings. And that theory works perfectly fine. So to answer your question, in other dimensions, dimensions beyond 11, we have problems with stability, these theories are unstable, they decay back down to 11 dimensions, they have what are called anomalies, singularities, which kill an ordinary theory. So the mathematics itself forces you to 11 dimensions.
Also because this is a Theory of Everything, there’s more room in higher dimensions to put all the forces together. When you put gravity, electromagnetism and the nuclear force together, four dimensions is not big enough to accommodate all these forces. When you expand to 11 dimensions, bingo, everything forms perfectly well.

what I find funny, is most of the people commenting on here, most likely have at maximum, 4 years post secondary education. this man giving us a lecture, has 13+ years of education. in physics, engineering, particle theory and ultimately theoretical physics. the man built a particle accelerator in high school for a science fair project for goodness sakes, with the hopes of creating anti-matter. he also created light-cone string field theory, following Mandelstam's light-cone formulation of string theory. if there is any reason you don't understand what he's talking about. it may be the thousands of hours he has over you in physics of any capacity.

As it was mentioned before below, at least he takes the time to explain these things to people. These are not just theories that have no evidence whatsoever. It took time, effort and lots of equations that have been work on by physicists trying to get an explanation for these things. Although it may sound crazy at first, that's what science is all about, proving if something is true or not depending on the evidence presented.

In theory, in-fact I am almost sure, it is possible to bend and distort space-time using multy-layered frequencies. Kind of like running water in front of a speaker whilst playing high and low frequency sounds. I guess you could fire key frequencies to compress space-time, ie; (bringing distance closer) and then emmit other frequencies simultaneously to steer the bend/curve of space time. Precision waves inside waves inside other waves generated from a specially wound torus coil. If wound correctly, the 8star torus coils can also produce their own energy by attracting positively charged ions due to hexagons in the coil wind. These hexagons as you know already provide natural levitation to insects such as beetles and butterflies due to the construction of their shells/wings under a microscope... aka (Bio-Levitation)

Perth No because laws DO NOT EXIST, they're actually simple logic. For example: 2+2=4. Even God couldn't change that. That's because THERE ARE NO LAWS. Gravity is Relativity, thermal energy is kinetic energy, and so on. Edit 3 years later: actually there _could_ be laws, and gravity or the universal constant and whatnot _could_ be some of them, but my point still stands about stuff like 2+2=4 not being changeable.

Gravity, thermal etc are relative as u said because we experience it that way. Our human brain can imagine great things. We can imagine universe getting destroyed or getting formed but cannot imagine what is beyond our universe like anti gravity, forth dimensional space, etc. We can't imagine those things because we don't know they look like. But they may exist outside our universe. And maybe in few years become part of our classic physics

But I have several questions: -Is there a way how we can, not just mathematically, but practically prove this hypothesis with evidence? -Is it even possible for us to physically leave the universe? -Whats the origin of each of these universes? -Where did the multiverse itself come from?

In simple words for those who understand a little bit about science. Till now we were talking about electron, proton, and neutron but after further researches, it was found that these fundamental particles are made of quarks. Now scientists are saying that these quarks can be broken down into tiny loops which they called strings. These String vibrate at different frequencies which result in different particles and different particles result in different objects that we see around. So the conclusion is that "Mass is actually VIBRATING STRING".

Current string theory is based on a mathematical equation, which requires 11 dimensions to work, in spite of this the equation itself is quiet elegant (or so I've read) and is the most feasible theory that bridges the gap between relativity and quantum mechanics. That's why most scientists today regard string theory so highly (that and it being created by Edward Witten). But until its has some observable evidence to back it up i will remain skeptical. Cause chances are a sexier theory will come along in a couple of decades and +Big Think will be posting uploads about that instead.

This might seem like a crazy theory, you need to know the other dimensions and how they interact together before things start to get interesting. I'll skip the 3 dimensions we know of (height, length and width) because everyone with 5 or more brain cells knows what they are, let's focus on how fascinating and possible this could be. This is just my simplified explanation of these, because it does get a bit complicated, so I highly suggest you research this theory with an open mind before writing it off as nonsense. The other dimensions aside from the 3 we know of are as follows. Time is the 4th dimension The Probability of other Universes existing is the 5th dimension All possible Universes branch out from the same starting point. For example if our universe came from the big bang then all other universes were created under the same conditions. This is the 6th dimension. All possible spectrums of Universes with different start conditions is the 7th dimension. Meaning there's a universe where Gravity repells instead of attracts, a Universe where fire is cold instead of hot, a Universe where Magic is real, a Universe where light speed is faster and a Universe where its slower. Basically every Universe will have different sets of limitations, the Laws of Physics could be completely different in one Universe and another Universe with no rules or restrictions whatsoever. A plane where all possible Universes have different start conditions is the 8th dimension Direct movement from one multiverse to another non-adjacent multiverse with different start conditions is the 9th dimension. Infinite Possibilities is the 10th dimension Now when I first researched this it sounded completely over the top and far fetched. But if you research all these dimensions in greater detail, the more sense it makes. Every dimension individually might not make sense but all together you do start to wonder. Having more then 4 dimensions makes more sense Mathematicly, "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, you have to think along the lines of Energy frequency and vibration. --Nikola Tesla Maybe you've herd of this theorem before. "If you have infinite Monkeys at infinite typewriters, one will eventually result in the complete works of Shakespeare" And as crazy as this may seem if Star Wars or Lord of the Rings was imagined by someone, then there could be Universes with that actually happening, the chances are low obviously but not 0 chance. For example,The odds of winning the lottery 2 times in a row are very low and remote, but not impossible. Its the same concept just on a larger more infinite scale. Parallel universes is one of the key elements. The CMB or Cosmic Microwave Background was detected and mapped they found an anomaly known as the "cold spot". Located in the "Eridanus" constellation, The temperature of this thing is 2.7 k lower then the rest of the CMB, the most intriguing thing was its size, its about 1.3 billion light years across, and it was originally believed it to be just a massive Supervoid but no evidence has been found to prove this. It might be from the impact of another Universe colliding with ours. Until a better theory rises to explain this thing, the Parallel universe theory is the best theory to go with at this point. I'm tired of Science making all these presumptions about what is impossible. and then get proven wrong, examples of what was thought to be impossible are numerous. -Spaceflight -Nanotechnology -Heavier then air flight -PCs and the internet -Breaking the sound barrier -Harnessing Nuclear energy -That no other galaxies existed outside our own -Warm Superconductors -Black Holes -The existence of Anti-matter -64 bit processors -Burning CDs and DVDs -Wi-fi -Televison Sets -DVR technology -The earth was flat All String Theory is trying to accomplish is unifying Quantum Mechanics with General Relatively into Quantum Gravity, its a supporting Theory for Biocentrism "The Theory of Everything". Parallel universes is the wild card. It also is going to try and do something that most scientists seem to ignore, and thats finally proving that Gravatons exist. For those who may not know, Gravatons are the hypothetical particle that makes Gravity....you know Gravity. Reading the comments it appears very few are taking this view seriously, which is fine. At first glance it seems like a ridiculous Theory, but the more you look into it and understand how the other dimensions factor in the equation that things start making more sense.

If we went from steamships to spaceships in 200 years, then obviously science and technology would be so much advanced in even just 1000 years away. Plus, we've got much more pressing issues to worry about now (eg climate change, energy/resource management) before we even get to billions of years later.

We only say that we can “see into the past” because it took so long for the light, which so how we perceive visual information in our universe, to reach our telescopes for us to enchanced. If we were to go through a worm hole to another section of the universe, we aren’t going back in time. We are simply going to another section of the universe in our present time.

Zayd Qumsieh String Theory has no proof what so ever. It *could be* true just like Steady State Universe Theory(an alternative theory to the Big Bang) and others of the like. The majority of the Science community is against the idea of "multiverse" proposed by String Theory. The biggest cause of scepticism is the lack of new *physical principles* underlying string theory and as such it is arguably (at worst) tantamount to guesswork (relatively speaking at least). With all due respect just because Mr. Kaku is one of the good spokesman Physicist doesn't mean that everything he says is the absolute Truth. the universe is overwelmingly concious at its basics, what we have seen and studied for years is classical physics, microscopic physics etc and quantum. quantum mechanics even at the molecular level let alone mechanic, nuclear, subnuclear, in the real of quantum mechanics the idea of particle is replaced by the idea of wave function. A wave function is a vector in a linear space, but what is a vector made of? a wave function in a linear space and a vector are made of same stuff thoughts are made of we are living in a thought universe, a conceptual universe quantum mechanics is just a play and dissplay of potentiality. The point im making is the deeper you go into the structure of natural law the less material, the less inert, the less dead the universe is, the more alive the more concious the universe becomes. Then when you get to the foundation of the universe the unified field or super string field, its simply a field of pure being, pure inteligence. Inteligence not because god but because its the fountain head of all the laws of nature all the fundamental forces, all the fundamental particles all the laws governing life at every level of the universe at the unified source, in the unified field, that makes the unified field the most concentrated field of inteligence in natur. Non material dynamic, self aware inteligence. What is the field that is waving you're probably wondering?, its the universal ocean,an ocean of potentiality, an ocean of pure abstract potential existance, its called the unified field or super string field. We are made of that. the tighter physics have tried to grasp onto physical reality to understand what is really made of, what are the core building blocks of life, at the basis of everything, life the universe slips through your finguers, and you come up with something that is increasingly abstract, to the realm of pure abstraction. And thats what the unified field is, its pure abstract potential, pure abstract being, pure abstract self aware conciousness Which rises in waves of vibration, to give rice to the particles the dna the bacteria the planets everything you see. god is not real

I think the main thing he forgot to point out is that when he says "universe" he does not mean everything. He simply means everything that can can interact with ( observable universe) and that other universes are just simpily regions in the "Multiverse"( Everything, aka traditional meanings of the word universe) in which is far away from our own. So techniquely not really new universes just areas in space that are so far away from our area that we can never interact with it normally

  • @deatheb

He's not talking about just the observable universe, in terms of the multiverse. Nobody knows truly how big the actual universe is. Many believe that the observable universe is a super small fraction of the true universe. Many believe it's infinite. I believe that it's ever expanding infinite. But I also believe in different dimensions. If there are different dimensions, then the possibility is truly endless and actually infinite.

Kaku is not talking about real physics. I am. Frank DiMeglio totally outsmarts AND exposes Einstein and the academic "physicists" and unifies physics: Energy has/involves gravity, AND energy has/involves inertia/inertial resistance. "Mass"/energy involves balanced inertia/inertial resistance consistent with/as what is balanced electromagnetic/gravitational force/energy, as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. This is proven by F=ma AND E=mc2. So, gravity/acceleration involves balanced inertia/inertial resistance; as gravity is electromagnetism/energy. Accordingly, a given planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times; AND this is then consistent with F=ma, E=mc2, AND what is perpetual motion; as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. Balance and completeness go hand in hand. The following explains F=ma AND E=mc2. Inertia/inertial resistance is proportional to (or balanced with/as) gravitational force/energy, as this balances AND unifies electromagnetism/energy AND gravity; as this balances gravity AND inertia. In other words, gravitational force/energy is proportional to (or balanced with/as) inertia/inertial resistance; as gravity is electromagnetism/energy. (This explains the cosmological redshift AND the "black holes", as electromagnetism/energy is gravity.) Accordingly, gravity/acceleration involves balanced inertia/inertial resistance; as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. So, gravity AND electromagnetism/energy are linked AND balanced; as gravity is electromagnetism/energy. This perfectly and clearly explains why half of the galaxies are inert or "dead". Gravity AND electromagnetism/energy are linked AND balanced in AND out of space AND time, as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. So, this is why Einstein's equations predict "black holes"; AND this also completely and perfectly explains why there is a unification of Einstein's equations (of gravity) with Maxwell's equations (of electromagnetism) given the additional (fourth) spatial dimension. Einstein's equations necessarily involve linked AND balanced electromagnetic/gravitational force/energy. I have now explained why Einstein's equations show that space is expanding or contracting. Any and all "curvature" of space necessarily involves what is balanced electromagnetic/gravitational force/energy, as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is fully invisible AND black. A photon may be placed at the center of the sun (as a point, of course), as the reduction of space is balanced by the speed of light; as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. So, gravity/acceleration involves balanced inertia/inertial resistance; as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. Therefore, half of the galaxies are inert or "dead"; as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. Awesome !!! I have provided clear, overwhelming, consistent, super extensive, and complete mathematical proof (AND the explanation) regarding why electromagnetism/energy is gravity. It is impossible to understand gravity apart from both ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy AND inertia/inertial resistance, as electromagnetism/energy is gravity. Great !!! It is certainly, clearly, and extensively proven how/that Einstein never nearly understood gravity. Think about it very carefully. ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. This is proven by F=ma AND E=mc2. Great !!! By Frank DiMeglio

I have a question - how wormholes, connecting space and time, are formed? I have seen images of wormhole in a 2 dimensional plane(also shown in the video). How it looks in a 4 dimensional plane? In black holes, there is a singularity that bends space - time fabric. The singularity in black holes have mass so it curves space and time. There is no matter in a wormhole then how do a wormhole curve space - time?

When you have to teach mathematics and physics you have to teach them beautiful. Somewhat like. Say you have water in a tank and slightly tap on the surface of water what happens. You see a ring kind of formation and you see a wave kind of patterns go through. That wave kind of pattern is called a sin wave. Sin X means that kind of pattern representation using mathematics. Where X is the angle. Now assuming a perfect surface with no other force this pattern will go on forever. In case of mathematics you have theta as the angle but in physics we call it as time and the amplitude or the bulge the displacement or distance. There are two kinds of distance one is vertical and the other is horizontal with respect to time. There are two times evolved one is distance of the amplitude from a particular point and the other time is the forefront of peaks from the centre. So when you create ripples or patterns you have two kinds of time and distance. So normally the universe keep expanding for ever. The time from the centre to the displacement time is called relative time. And the other relative distance. So when you tap one is a sin wave and the other a imaginary wave. So sin X + i cos Y = 0. Similarly from the edge it is cos X + i sin Y = 0. Say if you were to hit the surface a bit faster then water splash and then fall back as drops creating other ripples and they travel for ever creating other ripples. This can be represented as sin X + i ( sin Y + i cos Z) = 0. Note three distance and three time. The second equation is sin X + i ( cos Y + i sin Z) = 0. The third cos X + i ( sin Y + i cos Z) = 0. Z represent mass Y represent space and X represent velocity or spin. The cubic equations so formed are called the ripples on the fabric of space time.

"the only way to escape the death of the univers is to leave the univers" why? In only a few thousand years of evolution we've learned and achieved an immense level of information and knowledge. I think it's very closed minded to suggest a definitive ONE option to a problem TRILLIONS of years from now. Who's to say that if not us, another alien race that for all we know is millions or billions of years more advanced than us, could not achieve a level control over their environment, either evolutionary or technologically, so great that with one snap of the "fingers" could fix the entire universe right back? Just because it seems silly to US now? Come on... I've seen in a number of videos of you, Mr. Kaku, in which you present these "only one option" answers like what we know in this day and age will unquestionably apply a very long time from now, completely disregarding other options. I think that's a wrong way of informing the public. I enjoy all the material I see with you, but every time you make these definitive predictions about things so far into the future, I just wanna smack you in the face with a foam baseball bat to jog your screws loose...

I can't say I'm against the idea, but I really don't see a race becoming so advanced that it could, as you said, snap it's fingers and fix it all. Not to say it's impossible, as with anything in science everything is possible until proven otherwise. But thats going into the "god" zone of control. Abilities people tend to attribute to deities, such as power over the cosmos, just doesnt sound possible. Although manipulating their environments and creating artificial sources to fix the problem isn't out of the question.

What if the fabric of space-time was an illusion. If electrons were free-flowing at an imperceptible rate, then it would appear like there was some sort of fabric to the universe, but in actuality, it was electrons reorganizing similar to electromagnetic fields but slightly different. Almost like a laser moving fast enough to make circles, with retro-reflectors only showing the light at one angle. This is not an exact description but an analogy close enough to give you the gist of what I am saying.

  • @MontyVideo969

I don't know why the scientist calls other Universes other dimensions. They (if they exist) are the same as our Universe, just a long way away - it's like saying there isn't the notion of (X, Y, Z, T) on the Moon because there is less gravity there. Equations aren't reality, they merely describe a pattern of reality ie. the equations could be wrong but still look pretty close. As for worm holes??? Well, it's possible; but only in mathematics.

Ok, so at the minutest scale, the universe is made up of vibrating strings. Gravitational strings form loops, allowing gravitons to pass though universes, which would account for their 'apparent' weaknesses as compared to other fundamental forces. While 'open' strings, relating to the other fundamental forces such as electromagnetism, are pinned to our universe/ bubble/ whatever. I know this is also an extreme oversimplification, but I think it explains more than his whole video. Though I'm finding it hard to gain a deeper understanding of the theory when I have zero comprehension of the mathematical formula used. *sigh* for not being born with the gift.

Well they come up with theoretical physics, using existing equations, that for the moment, have the highest probability of being true. God has a book, unproven to be written by him, and the universe has no evidence for such a being. However I don't believe this is disproving god, it's just giving a theory back with theoretical evidence.

Andrew Garcia Well, because concept of god comes from primitve people who gave supernatural attributes to natural events which at their time they didn't understand. Second thing is - concept of god comes from ancient writings, where stories were made up, and it's historically proven that all supernatural stuff from quran, bible etc is made up, with further additions of catholic church during medieval times to control the people. God is product of emotions, subconsciousness, willing to believe without evidence, and bunch of historical lies.

Daniel Dziubanowski Because God is a simplified term for quantum fluctuations..that force is uncreated and is metaphysical. We do not know what predates the universe and the fact that this system exists in three dimensions and time being the fourth does not prove anything about a Creator's existence. Atleast the law of entropy states that well enough. It's like saying if you have a bunch wood pieces and detonate it..you'll end up with a house..I mean the probability of us existing without the slightest intelligent or divine intervention is say tenth to the power 300.

god is a liquid term, you can apply to anything you can. Before Darwin, there was creation myth. After evolution was proven, they started with intelligent desing. You can explain with god anything, because it extremely subjective, and not backed up by anything. The whole idea comes from book which is mostly a forgery. Just like people back in time explained thunders by zeus, now they try that with intelligent desing, and other explanations. I used to be hardcore christian, and studied that topic, I know now, after I started thinking on my own rather than being told what to think, that this is a myth, like zeus, thor etc. There's no god, no intelligent design. There's a saying - if you have hammer, everything looks like nails. The same with god. If you think it's real you start finding patterns in radnomness, where there are none. It's a product of one's brain. Self-suggestion. And emotions. I rely on reality and evidence I can look upon to.

  • @MrRijoAlex

Sir, at the time of Darwin's research he had the most primitive microscope. He outlined that the cell is the most basic form of structure which now we know that isn't true. And besides no cell contains a blue print of constructing anything of its own. You said it yourself that you rely on evidence, then you'd know better than me that Darwin's theory does not match the real field experiments. Honestly i'm a Christian and i'm not ashamed of it neither am i intimidated by non believers.
