@Chris Harden I find that interesting, my brother attended high school in Ann Arbor in the late 70s. It was the first time in my life I ever heard of a high school having metal detectors. We never found out WHAT happened there to cause a small city like Ann Arbor to have metal detectors in their high school.

Great video! Moved to Ann Arbor in 1989. Spend my senior year in Pioneer High School, went to EMU for 2 years, then got accepted to U of M, and graduated in 1996. Ann Arbor is an amazing city. Love to go back and visit the city one day. Great memories. Thanks for the flashback!

I think it is so fantastic that there are so many beautiful trees all through the state of Michigan , I lived in Windsor until 1978, went to Detroit, and all through the state back in the day. So good too see such lush foliage and thousands of tree. Ideal for cleaning the environment. I am impressed , never remember it being so beautiful. Also the brick homes and buildings have stood up to time immensely well, most are nicely cared for and well built. Will have to make one last trip to Michigan before my time is up. Hey, just found your channel this morning. I started with Highland Park. I currently live in Ann Arbor; well I guess it’s actually Pittsfield Township. It was cool to see very familiar roads and such. I shared this with my daughter and granddaughter; they moved out of Michigan 7 years ago. Early in the video when you were going east on Stadium just past Pauline you cut off a driver! They made Stadium one lane from two and there was a car turning and another car to your right and you passed using the left turn lane. It was cool to see all the trees in certain areas. When driving we don’t get to see as much. I like what you have here. I’ll be checking out your channel. I like the bits of history you include and city information.

Well, it's been a fascinating 5 days going through your videos! Pretty sure I've watched over a day's worth (24hrs) of your uploads. I love how you show us the eye-opening downtrodden places, especially. Please keep doing that! Your Cairo and Delray videos hit me pretty hard (educated me), especially. You have some great stuff here and I'm excited to watch your channel grow and evolve to show more of the downtowns, waterfronts, train stations, positive perspectives (as a balance to the negative commentary that's accurate), and unique places each city has to offer! It might be good to supplement your videos with quick walking tours that show areas you can't get to with your car (like the waterfronts, or pedestrian malls, for instance). I especially enjoyed this tour of Ann Arbor! It's a fascinating and beautiful city that I'm excited to explore on my own sometime, especially thanks to you! What a gem of a city! (Thank you trees and higher education!) I'm especially excited to see more places in the UP, and places in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania (especially Pittsburgh!), and my home state of NY (if you end up coming to the Albany area or driving through the Adirondacks, hit me up and I can give you some driving recommendations). Ty for taking the time to make this! It can't be easy to go around a city you didn't live in and give a tour of it. I'm a townie, and imo you missed some cool landmarks. @18:57 you drove over the busiest park in ann arbor and you didn't say a word! they've got shelters for public use, many picknick tables, a couple play grounds, sometime they do out-door art instillations, there's a butterfly garden, a canoe rental, etc. @22:42 the right hand side, the EPA emissions testing facility is one of 3 in the nation. @25:00 there are nice parks on the left and right, and on the left after you cross the bridge. 1 is a big field/playground, the other is an island with nice shelters and a gazebo, and the 3rd has a water park and pool, with a 30 ft high water slide. And 7 seconds later is when I would announce U of M medical campus, it's a separate thing from the central campus. @26:45 You're right next to where the Ann Arbor Summer Festival is held, with live acts during the day, and a free movie on a 100+ft screen after dark, vendors, etc. set up there. @28:05 you're passing the U of M museum of Natural Science and History. @28:41 You're right next to pinball pete's, a locally famous arcade. @52:28 Kelsey Archaeology Museum right @52:32 U of M Art Museum left @52:46 U of M law quad left, famous architecture and prestigious school. Most/all michigan supreme court justices worked/went there at some point in their careers. @53:24 down that little cul-de-sac on the right is the michigan union, an indoor mall/cafeteria, and the cube, an interactive art instillation. @54:00 on the left is the kempf house, a historic home that is also a museum. @54:48 on the right is the bus station, just out of frame. The building in frame is the post office. @57:07 on the left is the fleetwood diner, one of the first fast-ish food diners to open in america, they opened in 1949, before Blimpy Burger.

Nice video. I graduated from Michigan many years ago. Since then when I visit the Detroit area I like to visit Ann Arbor and see all the changes around the city since I graduated. One update for your video: Harbaugh moved on to the NFL & Sherron Moore is now the new Head Coach for Michigan 🙂

My daughter attended l, Bryan/Pattengill, Tappan, then Pioneer. She then attended Western Michigan University! She now lives in Phoenix Arizona. I wish she’d come back to good ole A2

The so-called campus of UM can't hold a candle to the beauty and serenity (at least large portions of it) to the campus of MSU. I attended and have degrees from both schools, btw.

Was getting a bit homesick when I got happy to have stumbled upon your vid about my hometown. My mom still lives in gr and had just had visited A2 with my sister, she said I wouldn’t recognize it as it’s been over 30 years since I’ve been back. You took the best streets to see the old downtown using Main, noticed that the old area for farmers market looks diminished, the toy store at Madison is gone as well as the corner drug store opposite which is a empty lot now. Use to live directly behind the stadium - could smell the popped corn and hear the crowds as my parents and neighbors parked cars on our lawns for extra money during the games! Attended Huron hs and worked at JCP @ Briarwood - my first real job and lived in Pittsfield Twnshp. You drove down all the streets I remember so well, was an awesome place to grow up, thanks so much for the update:)!🥰✨ Wow, as you’re driving I’m thinking - geez it looks like he’s headed to - and you go rt there... when you went to the old west side, you just passed by my Elmentary as well while I was wondering whether the old dime store across from the school was still standing! Soo glad to see that it is! Saw “Tommy” there at the State when it came out, so glad you hit that street, and glad Bivouac is still open all these years later!- very cool😌♥️

So many things I had forgotten, I kept having little shocks. Literally drove by three places I lived and close to others, my junior high, high school, and places I went all the time, like the library and two court houses. (One of my many jobs). They drove by places I used to work at and had forgotten about! (Well, I am old and lived there until I was 40)...I worked in the mall, too, Gus’s Coney Island and Record Land (both in the 1970s). One cool thing was cresting the hill on Eisenhower towards Industrial, when I was a kid they built that road and there were NO buildings yet, all wild forest, brush and a great creek where my brother, friends and I caught many frogs and snakes (and released unharmed)...Anyway, The first day the pavement was finished on that hill on Eisenhower the road was still closed for actually a few days and my little brother and our friends rode our skateboards up there and, while we had to carry them up the hill is pretty big, and then we rode our skateboards down to that giant hill with no cars, many times! It was a blast. Mind, skateboards back then we’re very narrow, quite different than today...It’s astonishing to see how built up everything is.

The first high school that I came across in my exploration of America that I wished I had attended. Signed; biased U of M fan. (Extremely hard to argue against how great of a city Ann Arbor is though. Biased or not. Let’s be honest.)

Seriously. The roads in Michigan are sometimes used as an inside joke with fellow Michiganders, because really across the entire state the roads are infamously terrible. Our newly elected governor of two years, Gretchen Whitmer, literally had a campaign slogan of, "fix the damn roads!" I'm not joking, that was an actual campaign slogan that she had. If there's one downside of Ann Arbor, and Michigan in general, it's the roads.

@@henrylipuma4767 you're right. Most of the roads in the state are in poor condition. But the further north you go the better the roads are. The roads in the UP are very smooth compared to downstate. Even with their extreme winters. Far less traffic and semi traffic.

As someone who's been a life long resident here, I can tell you with absolute certainty these roads have never seen better days.

Ann Arbor indeed is truly awesome to live in. Lived there for 3 and half years. University of Michigan is truly one of the best public universities in USA. Attended the university from 2017-2020. Lots of parks and recreational activities going on throughout the year. People are awesome and a great place to raise a family. Crime rate is very low. Winter is awesome and so is lot of activities during summer. Really loved the place. Super coverage of all the parts of the city by Nostalgia Tours. Great job buddy.

Very sorry to hear about the demise of Borders. Stylistically, I don't think I've ever seen a KZread clip quite like this - really good fusion of video and narration. I was very entertained and informed. Best wishes from a UK born U of M alumnus (class of '96), now resident in Japan :)

Also gone is Chess Express, a local place to buy chess sets, chess books, scoresheets etc. Went online for a while, now gone.

This was great! Drove by my childhood home and my dads business. Just a bit bummed you didn’t cover Kerrytown or community high school. CHS is such a a unique high school and would loved to hear some cool facts about it but maybe I’m a bit biased😉

I’m glad you enjoyed! My first attempt at making a video on Ann Arbor was 35 minutes. This was my second attempt after I received many comments saying that I should’ve included more. This one is almost an hour... if I were to show anymore or include more it would’ve been an hour and a half long video at the least, and who wants that. Lol.

@@ChrisHarden You might be surprised, your tours are almost like a podcast format. You could make them as long as you want, or break them up into segments and #1 get better watch-through because people see what they're looking for sooner and #2 get people thinking about the next episode in the series, to help get more mental real estate. Not that you need to do anything differently, but if your only concern is people's attention, don't worry about that.

If you go on Washtenaw south out of campus then turn left and go east on Geddes Ave you will go by Forest Hill Cemetery and Nichols Arboretum. South of Geddes Ave are a lot of old large beautiful homes.

You went by Huron High without mentioning it !!??? the best school in the state and no word??

You can rather easily transfer into Michigan and skip the acceptance, btw. Have to have good grades sure, but Washtenaw Community College has a program and it's fantastic. You get the exact same degree as if you went the entire time too. And you save a ton of money on tuition, especially if you're a resident of Washtenaw County, which you are after two years of residency I believe. You can also go to UM affiliates like Dearborn, Flint etc. and get the same degree (it doesn't say like Flint across top for instance).

I grew up in ann arbor on the old west side on liberty near 7th and went to pioneer. It's a beautiful city but very expensive.

Nice well done video. It does have one startling error at about the 3:15 mark. Tower Plaza is a 30 level building opened in 1969. This condominium stands 267 feet to the roof, and 292 to the top of the antenna.

Yeah I could've been less vague on that I suppose. The height limit for Ann Arbor was set after the Tower Plaza was constructed in 1969. From what I read, in 1969 the Tower Plaza construction caused controversy which helped bring on the 180 ft height limit for the city that is now in place. New high rises are allowed to exceed the height limit as long as affordable housing requirements are met.

@@Pistolita221 yea lol beekman is massive too. there's a small chunk of Washtenaw currently being worked on then the street before the bridge on Scio church rd and another bridge on south maple over the highway. they'll do these small projects and new buildings but won't fix main roads down stadium and towards downtown that have been falling apart for years, but hey, they'll build a street for bikes over them

@@g29000 They are putting in 2,300 dorms in at Elbel field and moving the field to the Fingerly lot, that's half a billion there, then there's a 14 acre development with 5-7 story buildings being built at the DTE lot between the Amtrak Station and the River, that'll be a quarter of a billion. And I believe there's a 19 story building going in behind the michigan theater, and I'm sure that ain't cheap either. But I'm sure Beekman on Broadway cost a pretty penny as well. Not my kind of place, though. The interior of the building is a parking garage, how ugly.

2:09 I see the building on the southwest corner of Huron/Main - where I worked in the mid 80's, it was "Citizens Trust Bank" at the time. That bank was liquidated a long time ago, I'm amazed to see the building still there and looking the same. I haven't been to Ann Arbor since the early 90's, now living in Southern California. I do miss the simple life in Ann Arbor!

Outside some of the Detroit neighborhoods, most of the Detroit suburbs and surrounding area in Southeastern Michigan is pretty nice for midwestern standards... let alone "rustbelt." Most people won't know as they just go off of what they see and hear from the media about Detroit and Flint and associate it with the rest of Michigan.

I will be in Ann Arbor Michigan for the first time this September

It's a cool place, it's worth staying over the summer at least one year, the night-life is phenomenal. The blind pig, the ark, the acts that go through the different halls and auditoriums, the festivals for blocks in downtown, the river, it's a GREAT place to be.

I believe me and my boyfriend will be moving to Ann Arbor in November!

I love Ann arbor, and I am so proud to be a part of this community. Everybody minds their own business. Nobody looks at you like a "yummy dessert." No stalking. I feel safe here.

This was so interesting, seeing roads and places I see daily from a new perspective. Would have loved to have seen our house, but it remained out of frame the multiple times you got to the nearest intersections. Pretty sure I saw our car though lol Sometimes, my husband and I will pick a street in A2 and drive as far as we can without turning. We've found some nice gems that way.

Ann Arbor is very nice. I’ve frequented the city for 20 years. I wish this video would get more views than my videos on Highland Park or Detroit, but it’s whatever. Negative media sells 🤷🏼‍♂️

I moved my M student daughter to 5 different houses in Ann Arbor and she recently married a boy she met while they were in the Band together and they just finished their brand new house in Ann Arbor so hopefully this will be the last time I have to move her. Go blue!

My uncle Dick retired from Olds, and he absolutely refused to drive a Buick, he was so bitter over what Roger did. He drove an older Cadillac.

My in-laws live in the neighborhood you drove through (near Winsted & Hanover) Hi Barb & Jake!!! And Go Blue!

Btw, being from north of Lansing, I have to put in a plug for East Lansing as well…they have a large university and combined with Lansing, the state capital, which is the home of Ransom E Olds, the creator of one of the first automobiles in the world. Oldsmobile came before Ford and GM! When Roger (of Roger and me fame) closed Oldsmobile, he cut the heart out of many of us in the Lansing area, he literally stole our identity.

No drive down State Street in Central Campus? With a mention of the rise and fall of Border's Books. Ann Arbor in the distant past was really isolated from Metro Detroit until the completion of the 14 Freeway. You had to go south to the 94 Freeway or take Ford Road west (most popular since it tapped into what was completed on the 14) or Geddes Road even worse than Ford. No easy way to get to Ann Arbor.

yea we had the naked mile too my grandma took me as a kid to see it lol

4:00 back when this was a 2-lane road. the bike lanes in downtown are godawful

It's so wonderful there, a vet was turned away, for a free covid shot, at the vets hospital.

Michigan is a beautiful state. But Detroit is not all bad, there are some very nice areas in the city, unfortunately not many know that until they visit the city and see for themselves. Downtown is super clean. Northern lower Michigan and all of the UP are definitely the prettiest parts of the state. The entire Lake Michigan coast is beautiful too. Very underrated state.

I live in downtown Detroit for 15 years now, it’s very nice now, actually, it’s beautiful. If you don’t believe it, come for a visit and see it’s hard to believe where we live that you can’t come to that conclusion.

You should drive down Kelly rd or drive down outer drive

That's what I had originally and people complained saying that they wanted to see more! It's either too long of a video that shows too much, or it's too short of a video that doesn't show enough. Lol

Lived on the ocean in florida shouldn’t have left. next 20 years in Ann Arbor. went to Asia for the next 20 and never looked back. It’s a very easy city to get around in and has most of the everyday necessities. But Ann Arbor will lull you into complacency and you will wake up an old person wondering where your youth has gone. If you want to lay back and take life easy it may be for you. if you want adventure excitement it definitely isn’t.

I agree 100% Michael. That’s exactly what happened to me. However, I can’t say I didn’t have two beautiful, amazing daughters who have become great adult women. Raising a Family here is def a great place to do so.

Why do they drive so fast and tailgate in Michigan,lol? A lot of drivers slam on the brakes at the last minute.

People in Grand Rapids and Traverse City might have some disagreement regarding how prestigious Ann Arbor actually is.

Maybe. I would say that Traverse City doesn’t have the jobs or a major university. Grand Rapids overall is nice but it has pockets of town that see high rates of crime, whereas pretty much all of Ann Arbor is nice.

And those people are wrong. lmao, Ann Arbor has more money and more history than those places put together. First fraternity house in the USA, important stop on underground railroad, U of M helped settle the land from native americans, same city planner as DC, Frank Lloyd Wright homes, world class art museum, world famous restaurant (Zingermans), Gratzi is an under-appreciated gem with mosaics on the wall, world-class venues like Hill and Rackham, top notch cuisine and atmosphere from around the world. Ann Arbor has THREE tier 1 hospitals. The number of billionaires who live in Ann Arbor is weird, probably more than Traverse City and Grand Rapids combined. Obama has a house here, now that his daughter is going to school in town. The U of M brings in tens of billions in tuition, research grants, sports, etc. every year and those people spend their money in local stores, and their parents come expecting fine dining during graduation. Grand Rapids is a manufacturing town like Detroit pre-riots with all the rail yards, and Traverse city is a vacation spot. Ann Arbor has the U of M and is the head of the Lutheran Church dioecies of michigan. No other city has our level of academic success and religious importance, with all the different foods. Barton Hills average household income is 250k, and Superior Township has just as much money. Traverse city is a nicer place to vacation, and grand rapids has better jobs than most cities, but ann arbor is far and away the most prestigious.
