Few people know that this song is about the relationship with her fans rather than with a partner. When Hotel Paper was released, Michelle and her label at the time, Maverick, had high expectations for the album. Are You Happy Now did great, but the follow up single Breathe didn't jump the bar and things did not go in the way everyone hoped for. Michelle had a rough time with how critics in the media received her sophomore album (even though, I'm sure for some of her fans it's one of their all time favorite albums, as I am one of them) and being away from family and friends while touring took a toll on her. She had a baby and this news wasn't well recevied by her label. For her third album she wanted to take a different direction about her music and didn't want to make it alone, she wanted to start The Wreckers and her label wasn't a bit excited about it. All the opposite, they fought her over this new project because it was going to alienate her fanbase. After 3 years of long battles with her label, shutting down her own message board, Maverick being eaten by Warner and trying to find a place in there (because only few wanted to bet on a pop-rock star going country) Stand Still, Look Pretty came out and it was a success. Things were looking bright again but then Jessica wanted to pursue a solo career. So her come back to being a solo artist began and the release of a new album didn't come without another battle. Michelle relationship with music wasn't the same after realizing things were more about the business and less about the music. This kind of artist block, besides the record company crisis didn't help her situation either. Everything she proposed to her new label was rejected. Song after song, they wanted her to try a new sound, not one that she was pleased with, but one that could sell a lot of albums, as that's what they were desperately needing. From time to time, fans were being promised that new music was coming out the next month, next season, next year. After so many broken promises some fans were furious at her because this supposed new music was never coming out, the same thing that happened before Stand Still, Look Pretty was repeating once more. One of those attempts of a single was This Way. Making music for her wasn't the same, being blamed for not putting music out was something she had to constantly apologize. The "No I would never talk to her that way" is about a girl that claimed that Michelle called her a bitch and asked her to leave at a concert. And this is the magic of Michelle Branch, who not only sings beautifully but can also write a very relatable song.
