The Pieta almost breathes. An amazing masterpiece.

To think about the anatomical and dress details of this grandiose work of art and then finding yourself, as I happened to be right directly in front of such a sculpture you realize the artistic greatness and the great genius of Michelangelo.

Someone once said, "If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, then you don't understand it yourself." Clearly, and luckily for me, this does NOT apply to you! What a well-thought-out presentation. I'd like to thank you in four different languages too, but I'm not that talented. 🙏

I saw the Pieta when it was in Canada at The World's Fair. At that time you could walk right up to it with only a rope around it . I could not take my eyes off of it for some time. It looked alive ! That's the only way I can describe it. What a masterpiece.

I believe that’s a replica hut I don’t know
Having visited all of these places and seen these works more than once I would have to say that the unfinished bound captives and other unfinished works found in Florence and the Pieta are my favorites. The unfinished sculptures bring to life Michelangelo’s concept that his job was to liberate the innate statue from the marble. Nothing prepared me for the affect of actually seeing the Pieta in real life. Every time I’ve visited it I cry. There’s such pathos and such a deep sense of divinity about it. I’ve heard people who have stood beside me at the Vatican say that they don’t believe in God and yet they feel something that they can’t express when they see this statue. That is a testament to Michelangelo’s genius!

I felt the same when I saw the Pieta. I stood there motionless for a while on the verge of tears. There is tragedy of the moment and at the same time acceptance, mother's love and sacrifice.

I cried when I saw David because I was awstruck. I was completely captiated by the Pieta and it's beauty and depth. I was stunned that Michaelangelo was only twenty-three when he sculpted that extraordinary, divinely-inspired work of art.

My Hero, my inspiration. Thank you. Grazie mille.
I was in Europe this Summer and I watched your video on Rome while waiting in line for the Pantheon. It enhanced my appreciation for the city so much while I was there! I was so excited to walk around it with all the context. I just finished watching this video and it honestly blew me away. I thought I knew about these works when I saw them in Florence and Rome. My eyes have been opened, this was so extremely fascinating and you presented it perfectly

I just used this for my homeschool. My eight and six year old thoroughly enjoyed and were able to follow this video. Thank you for helping us revel in this beautiful art!
I live in Italy and actually studying this stuff for school, you cleared up some things about michelangelos psychological state, thanks
Pieta is the best sculpture ever made.
Great video as usual! Supposedly another reason the proportions of the David are strange is because it was originally comissioned as 1 of 12 sculptures (from different artists) that were supposed the line the roof of the Duomo. While the head, neck, and torso look really large and long at ground level, the extreme viewing angle when looking at it on the roof from the ground (about 250 feet or something close to that) it would look fairly normal and properly proportioned. If true, it shows how remarkable his skills and grasp of perspective and foreshortening were. A true master.
This is simply one of the best videos on KZread I have ever seen. Entertaining as well as educational.

Beautiful essay. I was lucky this year and could visit Rome for the first time. Oneself isn't the same after seeing Michelangelo, Raphael, or Caravaggio so closely
You’ve moved me to tears with your explanations. I’ve always known him to be one of my favorite artist in history, amazed by his work but could never fully explain to those around me why he was so amazing. You’ve perfectly assembled the verbiage needed to do so. Absolutely breathtaking knowledge you’ve bestowed on us. God bless you. ❤ God bless you.

Thank you so much! I have actually been to the Sistine Chapel when I was a little boy over 6 decades ago. And I walked right up to the Pieta and could have touched it, as there were no barriers or protections around it. But no one ever explained the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel as well as you have in this video. I look forward to part two with great anticipation.

I saw the Pieta before all the safety barriers were up... We were in Rome for a week, but my friends just let me be in front of the work!!I cried and cried at the perfect beauty of it .The hand of the Christ ,and the sorrowful face of His mother just kept me entranced.... To this day,it is to me as if I am still standing there ........

Thanks for this insightful introduction to the genius of Michelangelo. I am from Rome and I have seen his masterpieces multiple times. My favorite of them all is the Sistine chapel, every time i visit it, even with all the crowd of tourists, it is a magical experience. The sheer power of the images and figures he was able to conceive is still there. Yes, I would say that his masterpieces are not beautiful, they are powerful, unforgettable, unique. Another Italian artist that to me was able to bring power to his masterpieces is Caravaggio, another genius. I love them both.
Manuel. You are awesome. You teach so much and I am grateful Sir. THANK YOU. Following you and sharing you all over the place :)
Thanks Manuel! It was great!
