In Sweden everything is heavily legislated, except migration. Migration from the third-world have been excessively liberal, due to the benefit of the state, more people more tax money. But this hasn´t panned out as planned, violent crimes has increased significantly since the 80´s which is very costly to deal with. Also, now Sweden is one of the most class divided countries in EU. Still most Swedes are pro open borders, mainly of humanitarian reasons, a nice propaganda from the progressive liberal-leftists who are indirectly in-control of all the major news outlets. Impressive how Houellebecq has such wide insight.

true. but then, is the 'will of the people' really a good thing? the masses can easily be convinced into doing the most horrid things. by contrast, it was when the West was ruled by enlightened autocrats and oligarchies when it made the most crucial advances - Caesar, the Medicis, Charles V, Louis XIV, Napoleon, etc. Democracy was considered regressive by Plato and Aristotle. For good reason.

But those are still moments of history where the leaders were killed and defeated by their people. Caesar got killed by Brutus, Louis XIV by the Revolution, Napoleon by his own greed to conquer Europe. Democracies like Switzerland are thriving, because there people are allowed to propose new laws, and those laws are studied and ratified by experts and politicians to see if they are realistic laws or weird fever dreams. Those laws can apply to regions, and if other regions like to apply those laws to their own region, and over time overlap a majority of the country, they can be adopted as national policy, but it is rarely a top down decision, as it most often is in other European countries, even those we often consider to be democratic like France. Houellebecq is also right on Sweden being like a dictatorship. It was frightening to observe how colour blind they are, how unwilling they are to discuss integration, racism, gang violence and the incoherence between secularism and Islam while I was staying there. A very good work of art that conveys the experience would be The Square. Amazing movie on Swedish culture.

@@lennart2089 It's not about being developed. Democracy has nothing to do with development. It is a liberal ideology that concerns certain pragmatic freedoms: secularism, freedom of the press, individual liberties, and I agree that because of our history, Europe is the place where democracy sprang into life and had its long development since the Renaissance and still growing until today. I am not preaching for democracy everywhere. I don't care if certain cultures prefer dictators. I'm talking about a European context only, where certain countries simply pretend to have democratic principles, but in reality, politics are heavily top-down instead of bottom-up. That needs to change. Ironically, the EU is a great organ to secure democracy stays afloat in these countries. The way the EU is trying to solve the democratic crises in Hungary and Poland respectively shows promise. These are countries where leaders crack down on human rights, whilst the people demand them. It's a great example of leaders abusing their power against the will of the people.

Poland and Hungary observes the west and see what a mess we made and are trying to prevent that to happen to their own countries. I travelled quite alot in Poland and I would say it´s one of the friendliest and least dangerous countries in Europe to travel nowadays. Democracy is Liberal in it´s own nature for sure, but that is intended for the people of that specific country and culture. What the EU have worked for is to become a multi-cultural globalized economy, and it´s been a failure from the start. Sure Germany, France and even Sweden has benefited from this Union in terms of Economics, but if you look to the south of Europe, and the smaller nations in the union their "freedom" has come with a high price, the quality of life for the majority has decreased instead of increased.
