I had the great fortune to meet Michael and Joah when they were on their way to the labor day art festival in Sausalito. They're superbly professional, friendly, and just awesome guys all around. Highly recommended -- even if you're like me, a total noob and a percussion wannabe. I now have two of their instruments, and both are just masterful works of art.

You are an excellent interviewer! You ask great questions and then let your guest talk. Such gorgeous sounding instruments and fascinating to hear his story. Wonderful synchronicity he was in the area when you called. 😊

As a wood instrument maker myself, that was very inspirational. Just love the tones of those drums, I've been wanting to start building them for a long time. Oh, and the bit about doing rhythm patterns as walking patterns without hand dominance, that was a precious bit of information I'll sure keep in mind. Thanks Kalani!

That sound! Looks deceptively simple to build and making them sound rich and have no overtones... not easy.

I just recently started playing Tongue drums. I love it! I got a Luna from Tung Drum Company out of Ireland. There are not many videos on YT covering these instruments. You are one of the few.

I acquired one. It is a 9 note. It has his signature on the other side. It says M. Thiele 1987. It’s in excellent shape. I wonder how much this thing would go for. Although it’s fun to play. Nice and soothing.

These are larger drums, so I'm guessing they will be in the $400-500 range.

You can probably make it out of any hardwood, but different woods have different sound characteristics. Oak, for example, sounds very dense and has almost no sustain - I don't care for the sound.
